The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 54: Dawn of the Blade and Shadows Gather
The morning sun cast long, golden angles across the slate roofs of Port Vandermir, illuminating the newly renovated estate standing proudly beside Zevryn’s safehouse. There were no grand inauguration ceremonies or public announcements, just the heavy, rhythmic thud of wooden training swords striking flagstones and the sharp, authoritative crack of an instructor's voice.
Inside the sprawling courtyard of the private tutor house, Alejandro de Silva was in his element. Dressed in a sharply tailored slate-blue fencing doublet, he twirled a practice foil with effortless theatrical flair, holding the attention of Julian, Marcus, and the other elite merchant scions.
"Again!" Alejandro called out, his voice ringing with amusement and challenge. "Your footwork is improving, Julian, but you telegraph your thrusts like a nobleman buying wine. If this were a real blade, your ribs would already be open to the wind. Try it with a cleaner angle!"
A few paces away, Xel moved with silent, ghostly efficiency, observing the perimeter while managing the logistics of the morning session. Meanwhile, Reniah stood at the edge of the training ring, her form locked into the strict, steady foundational breathing and stance Zevryn had hammered into her. Her movements were sharp, precise, and entirely devoid of the hesitation that had once defined her. She wasn't just keeping pace with the merchant scions; she was quietly outclassing them in pure discipline.
While the academy hummed with disciplined life next door, Zevryn sat alone in the absolute silence of his private study.

The heavy oak door was bolted shut, reinforced with layered arcane wards that muffled every sound from the outside world. On the wooden desk lay detailed regional maps of Port Vandermir and its surrounding wilderness.
Zevryn raised his right hand. The dark iron ring etched with combat-resonance runes caught the faint light. With a subtle mental command, he activated the arcane tether.
A wisp of grey shadow unspooled from the ring, materializing into the compact, stony form of Vax. The miniature gargoyle perched silently on the edge of the desk, its glowing amber eyes fixed respectfully on its master.
"I have a task for you," Zevryn commanded softly, his voice low and steady. "Head west, beyond the city walls into the rugged foothills. Search out the bandit dens operating in the wilderness. I want you to locate the most secluded, hidden camp they use, the one tucked completely away from the main trade routes and patrols."
Vax bowed its stony head. "Understood, Master. I will slip through the scrub and stone unseen. I'll find their blind spot."
"Do not engage," Zevryn warned. "Just map their layout, numbers, and exits. Report back before dawn."
"As you command," Vax whispered, dissolving back into a wisp of grey shadow that coiled smoothly into the ring.
Zevryn leaned back in his chair, his pale eyes narrowing thoughtfully. While the grand web involving Xalthar and Gore-Tide Reach required careful, long-term maneuvering, scouting an isolated bandit nest in the western hills would provide a useful proving ground for his new capabilities, and perhaps yield a profitable stash of salvage.
He stood up, adjusting his coat as the daylight began to fade. The academy was thriving, his proxies were falling into line, and the shadows were beginning to obey his every command.
