Chapter 2097: It Could Have Been Our Last Touch
As the large male Yeti saw Arlo rushing toward him like a black bolt, he growled, lifted both arms up, and roared, causing the snow around him to explode into a swirling whirlwind of sharp ice shards.
Arlo was the strongest, Rex was the toughest, and Arr was the fastest. There were three of them, and three Yetis to slay, and so, the fight went just as the orcs expected. As the Yeti roared, Samantha’s second bullet came flying like a spark and shot right through the male Yeti’s right lung. She was aiming for the heart, but the swirling wind and sharp ice blades managed to deflect her shot.
It was horrifying to see an armor-piercing round get deflected by just that, but this was the nature of fighting against aliens. Their power was always bone-chilling. Samantha loaded her third round in, and by that time, Arlo was already upon the male Yeti, jumping right through the whirlwind of sharp ice blades.
The ice blades scratched his black armor, shattered, and were deflected by the durable, composite material and countless reinforced layers of metallic fabric. Arlo swung his spear like a halberd, and the Yeti’s arms came crashing down to smack it away with enough force to bend the entire ATTR in half.
When the Yeti’s arms hit Arlo’s spear, the metal rod groaned, and the ground around them shattered. The swirling storm of sharp ice exploded, and the entire area was torn apart as violence ensued. The two swung at each other at blinding speed, and in a single second, red blood was already covering the entire area.
Behind them, Rex rushed one of the two females with his shield and tried to smack her away. She was smaller than the male and should be lighter. But the moment she saw the shield heading toward her face, she swung both arms at it, hitting it with more force than a cannon, and that rattled Rex’s arms till his bones cracked. But he didn’t crumble.
Everyone of Arlo’s team had something special, a power they only have and was the main reason they got picked up for this special squad. What Rex had was regeneration, a lot of it.
Before the cracks could expand and his bones could shatter, Rex’s healing factor kicked in, and his muscles tensed in the blink of an eye. With a roar, he stepped forward and bashed the female Yeti on the face, sending her rolling on the ground as he ran after her and kicked her on the head.
On the other side, Arr flashed across in the blink of an eye, stabbing the other female Yeti with a knife to the back, and with a smile, he twisted his wrist, and everything was engulfed in blinding light. Arr could store and discharge electricity in his body, and he had masted the basics of lightning magic. He was walking, talking, lightning-class taser.
But... the Yetis weren’t soft, and those attacks weren’t enough to even make them flinch. The female that Rex tried to kick in the face ended up biting his foot, and was now swinging him around like a dog swings a plushie. Arr didn’t have it any easier, as right after twitching for a moment, the female Yeti swung around and smacked him so hard that he leaked a bit and was sent rolling on the snow.
They were strong, far stronger than the other orcs except a few of the commanders and generals, but... they still didn’t know anything about the monsters of this world, they didn’t know how durable Yetis are or what their weaknesses were... so this fight was a huge risk for them.
CLANG! With a loud bang, the male Yeti punched Arlo on the spear and sent him flying back, causing the orc to land with a growl. "Aren’t you a tough one?" He smiled and stood, "Now that I’m done warming up, it’s time to kick some ass."
ZON! At that moment, Arlo disappeared from in front of the Yeti, and Arad, who was watching from afar, flinched, glaring right at the battle.
Arlo appeared behind the Yeti, and the wild monster sensed him immediately. He turned around with a violent swing of his massive arm, aiming at Arlo’s head, but in the next blink, Arlo’s spear came flashing upward, tearing the Yeti’s swinging arm like an axe chopping a rotting branch.
Arlo’s grey eyes were glowing purple, and in the next second, he spun, swinging his spear toward the yeti’s legs, and with that one swing, he shattered his knees like they were made of biscuit. As the Yeti’s head was coming down, Arlo was coming in with a second swing and beheaded him with a loud impact.
The two female Yetis glared at him with both shock and fear in their eyes. What was that? What just happened? And as they were stunned, one of them got shot right in the dome by Samantha, and before the other could even react, Arlo threw his spear and pierced her chest, killing her on the spot.
Rex and Arr gasped for air as they stared at Arlo, "You’re as strong as ever." Rex looked at the corpses as he spoke, and Arr waved his hand back to Samantha, as if thanking her for killing the Yeti he was fighting.
"Beatrice should be analysing the battle data right now. Next time, you two will know how to fight this kind of alien." He kicked the corpse of the male Yeti. "Those bastards are stronger than they looked; they even caught me off guard."
He smiled, "I bet any of you could take two groups of this kind at once. Especially Arr, you’re fast, so their raw strength won’t matter if you hit and run for a while."
The two nodded, and then stared down, "But for now, what should we do with them?"
Arlo smiled, "Of course, harvest and eat a bit. We deserve a treat. We’ll register samples and send data back, and keep on exploring until we find a way out."
The two smiled as the ATTR rolled by their side, and the three girls were already drooling as they stared at the Yeti corpses. "Arlo, can we eat those?" Samantha asked, and he shrugged. "Probably not, we don’t have the time."
As they paled, he laughed, "I’m joking with you, we can eat. Even I got sick from Orc paste."
Rex and Arr rushed to the back to open the ATTR’s storage bed and pull the corpses in, and Arlo jumped into the front to check the data Beatrice gathered. On his way, he passed by Samantha and slapped her butt, but she didn’t react.
He stopped and then looked at her as she kept walking. "You won’t get angry?"
She froze and then looked back at him. "Well, I’m more worried about the food now..." She giggled, but then her smile faded away. "Say... we won’t make it back alive, would we?"
"We’ll make it, why ask?" He looked at her with a confused face, and she shook her head.
"I know, we know that we almost have no chance of making it out alive. Our data would reach the homeland, but we won’t." She approached him, "That’s why you’ve been teasing everyone here, not just me. Rex and Arr are too stressed to do anything, Beatrice cries herself to sleep, and I’ve seen Lapis panic more than just once today..." She scratched the back of her, "Even I... I can’t help but think that each bump in the road would be our downfall."
She tapped him on the shoulder, "That’s why I’m not angry. That could’ve been the last time you touched for all I know." She then turned and left to check the food, and Arlo scratched his head with a growl. "Agrrr... this one..."
"Arlo! Come look at this." As Beatrice called, he rushed toward her.
