The Dragon Kings' Forbidden Witch

Chapter 163: How Do You Feel About Your New Status

  • Next Chapter

Thorne ate quietly, observing the interaction between his brother and Morgana, his dark eyes tracking everything. When he spoke, his words were measured and carried weight that the casual banter of his brothers did not.

"How do you feel about your new status?" he asked. The question was direct but not unkind.

Morgana found herself answering honestly, the truth emerging despite her caution.

"Overwhelmed," she admitted. "I don’t understand what being a ward truly means. What’s expected of me."

The three kings exchanged a look....subtle, quick, but filled with meaning that Morgana did not yet understand. Draeven and Kaelen seemed to defer to Thorne in that moment, allowing him to navigate the question.

"All in good time," Thorne said. "For now, we simply want you to become comfortable here. To understand that you are safe. That you belong."

The word "belong" seemed to hang in the air.

Morgana belonged to the palace now. She belonged to the royal wing. She belonged, in some way she did not fully understand, to these three men.

As breakfast progressed, Morgana became increasingly aware that she was being observed.

Not unkindly. Not with the intensity of judgment. But with the focused attention of beings who found her fascinating in a way she did not fully comprehend.

Kaelen watched her as she ate, his pale eyes following the movement of her hand to her mouth, the curve of her lips, the way she lifted the coffee cup to drink. His attention was openly appreciative, and Morgana felt heat rise in her cheeks beneath his gaze.

Draeven listened to every word she spoke as if she were reciting poetry rather than simple descriptions of her day. When she spoke about missing her friend Rowan, about the confusion of the trial, about her attempts to adjust to her new circumstances, his golden eyes held an intensity that suggested he was memorizing every detail, every emotion, every vulnerability she revealed.

Thorne observed it all.

His dark eyes moved between his brothers and Morgana, as if he were orchestrating something, as if he understood the larger pattern that his brothers were moving toward without fully planning it. His silence was not empty but full of calculation, of strategy, of understanding.

The physical proximity between them was gradual but unmistakable.

Kaelen’s chair seemed to shift slightly closer as breakfast progressed. Draeven leaned forward more frequently, his elbows on the table, his attention focused entirely on Morgana. Thorne remained still, but his stillness was somehow more present than movement.

She became aware of their scents....each distinct, each powerful in its own way. The warmth radiating from their bodies. The subtle shift in the air as they moved. The awareness that they were dragons, that they were powerful, that they could destroy her if they chose to do so.

But they were choosing not to.

They were showing her, without words, what it meant to be the focus of three powerful beings’ complete attention.

Morgana felt her breathing become slightly shallow.

She was aware of her own body in a way she had never been before. The way her heart was racing. The way her skin seemed hypersensitive to the air around her. The way the fine fabric of her gown suddenly felt almost too much against her skin.

She was afraid.

But beneath the fear was something else. Something that made her want to move closer to them rather than away. Something that made her want to hear more of their voices, to feel more of their presence, to understand more fully what they were and what they might want from her.

The meal drew to a close gradually.

The coffee cups became empty. The food was consumed. The servants who had been standing at discrete distances appeared to clear the table, working with the kind of practiced efficiency that suggested this happened every morning. They did not look at Morgana or the kings, did not acknowledge the undercurrent of tension that seemed to fill the chamber. They were simply executing their duties.

Finally, only the four of them remained.

Draeven leaned back in his chair, his golden eyes still fixed on Morgana. He studied her for a long moment, and then he spoke.

"You will join us for breakfast tomorrow as well," he said.

It was not a question. It was not a request. It was a statement of what would be. A declaration that this would become routine, that she was now expected, that her presence would be anticipated.

Morgana hesitated, then nodded.

"If it pleases you, Your Majesty," she said, the formality emerging despite Draeven’s earlier suggestion that she simply use his name.

Kaelen’s smile widened, and there was hunger in it.....not the hunger of a predator for its prey, but the hunger of someone who had found something precious and was delighted by the discovery.

"It would please us very much," he said.

The double meaning of his words was unmistakable. It would please them very much to have her here. It would please them very much to look at her, to listen to her, to be in her presence. It would please them very much for whatever came next.

Thorne stood.

His movement was smooth, controlled, carrying the grace of a being who had perfected the art of motion over centuries. He moved around the table, and when he reached Morgana, he extended his hand to help her rise.

"For now, Agnes will take you back to your chambers," Thorne said. "Rest. We will send for you again tomorrow morning."

But the way he said it suggested that tomorrow would bring more than just breakfast. That the seduction would continue. That they were patient beings who understood how to build toward something significant.

Morgana took his hand, and even that simple contact....his palm against hers, his fingers gentle but strong, sent awareness cascading through her. She rose from her seat with his assistance, and for just a moment, they stood close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him.

"Thank you," she whispered, uncertain what she was thanking him for. The breakfast? The invitation? The care they were taking with her?

All of it, perhaps.
