Chapter 50: Chapter 47: Illusionist

Someone slammed their fist on the table.

"So what if he’s a Yin Yang Master?

If he dares stir up trouble in the Xia Kingdom, he won’t be going back!"

An Investigator immediately chimed in:

"Taboo Items? It’s not like we don’t have any!

Team Leader, go apply for a Taboo Item!

Let me be the first to bear the initial wave of its backlash!"

The Taboo Items in the archives were all extremely dangerous.

Even though they had figured out some of the rules for using the Taboo Items, Investigators who wielded them were still in constant mortal danger.

But the Investigators weren’t afraid in the slightest.

Everyone in the Anomaly Administration Bureau was a carefully selected, iron-willed veteran. Male or female, none of them would ever back down.

Especially since the opponent was one of the East Sakura People, every one of them wanted to be the first to wield a Taboo Item, the first to be harmed by it.

Seeing the group’s morale soaring, Liu Wei also cracked a smile.

"I’ve already applied for a Taboo Item.

Don’t worry, the higher-ups are taking this matter very seriously.

They’re actually hoping we can capture the Yin Yang Master and bring him back to the Anomaly Research Institute for dissection.

The only problem is, where do we find this Yin Yang Master?

This opponent is different from the ones before. This is an intelligent Supernatural Being.

If he decides to hide, we might not be able to capture him alive before he leaves the South Sea."

Everyone fell silent, their minds racing as they thought of a solution.

Liu Wei’s gaze swept over the crowd before he suddenly spoke up:

"Huh? Where’s Li Mingyue?"

Only then did everyone realize that someone had been missing from the conference room all along.

The female Investigator who had spoken earlier said:

"Mingyue took leave and went out."

The female Investigator’s name was Yang Shayan. As one of only two women on the team, she had naturally become Li Mingyue’s mentor.

A flash of displeasure crossed Liu Wei’s eyes.

"Who did she ask for leave? Did she act first and report later?"

Yang Shayan smiled and said nothing.

The displeasure in Liu Wei’s eyes grew.

’So she just ran off and told Yang Shayan afterward, is that it?’

’Everyone knows Yang Shayan is a total pushover, right?’

’She’s definitely covering for Li Mingyue right now.’

Liu Wei didn’t like Li Mingyue to begin with.

Everyone present was either an elite from the military, a top graduate from the public security university, or a decorated Sheriff.

But Li Mingyue was just a "vase" who had majored in flight attendance.

Getting into the South Sea criminal investigation department was already an exceptional admission.

Who would have thought that a young woman who hadn’t even completed her criminal investigation internship would be personally recruited by Cao Ye into the Shocking Court Wood Investigation Team?

Liu Wei snorted coldly.

"No sense of organization, no discipline! We’re all in a meeting, what is she doing?!"

Just then, Yang Shayan’s phone rang. It was Li Mingyue.

She said with a wide smile:

"She’s still young. Don’t be so harsh. She’ll integrate with the team in time.

She’s calling now, so don’t you dare be passive-aggressive."

Although Yang Shayan was just a regular Investigator, she had deep seniority and had once been Liu Wei’s mentor.

Liu Wei said helplessly:

"Fine, go ahead and spoil her, Sister Yan.

Just have her bring us back a late-night snack, and we’ll let this slide."

He was giving Yang Shayan a way to save face.

Yang Shayan chuckled and answered the phone.

"Mingyue, the team leader is hungry. Bring him back an order of fried noodles."

Suddenly, Yang Shayan’s smile vanished. Her expression froze, and she spoke in a low, serious voice:

"Mingyue, is your intel reliable?"

Yang Shayan shot to her feet with a WHOOSH.

"Don’t make any rash moves! We’re on our way!"

Liu Wei blinked.

"What’s wrong, Sister Yan?"

Yang Shayan said gravely:

"We have a lead on the Yin Yang Master.

North District, Xianghai Garden District, Unit 3, Building 2."

Liu Wei’s eyes went wide.

"Holy shit! As expected of the general hand-picked by Director Cao! Badass!"

Everyone sucked in a breath of cold air.

They looked at each other, seeing the utter shock written all over one another’s faces.

’How did Li Mingyue do it?’

’Just moments ago, they were discussing where to even start looking for the Yin Yang Master, completely clueless.’

’And Li Mingyue just dug him up?!’

’So she didn’t take leave to go have fun, she went off to handle some major business and give us all a huge shock, is that it!’

Liu Wei’s expression turned serious.

"This is sudden. We can’t wait for backup from the bureau.

Everyone except Sister Yan, grab your weapons and follow me!"

The weapons of the Anomaly Administration Bureau were not ordinary firearms, batons, or tasers used against common criminals.

These weapons were specifically designed to deal with anomalous humans, each one crafted by the scientists at the Anomaly Research Institute.

Those scientists specialized in various fields, including bacteriology, energy studies, weaponology, and more.

"Yes, Team Leader!"

The male Investigators ran downstairs in an orderly fashion.

Liu Wei said to Yang Shayan:

"Sister Yan, you make the arrangements.

Have the South Sea Public Security Bureau lock down Xianghai Garden District and dispatch the Military Officer Corps for support.

If headquarters sends anyone, you be the liaison."

Yang Shayan nodded seriously.

"You all be careful."

...

「South Sea, Xianghai Garden District」

"I’ve seen a ghost! I’ve seen a ghost!"

Jiang Yong’s face was deathly pale. He muttered to himself, his hands trembling as he opened the door.

Just now, in the taxi, he had seen the man in the yellow suit multiple times!

Sometimes the man in the yellow suit would be standing not far behind the car, smiling.

Other times, he’d be visible on the side of the road, licking an ice cream cone.

When he entered the district, he saw the man in the yellow suit leisurely following him.

Just like a ghost!

’Ever since I stepped into that antique shop today, it feels like I’ve entered a completely different world.’

Jiang Yong locked the door and sprinted into the bedroom.

He took the cash, bank cards, and some gambling chips he hadn’t yet exchanged from his backpack and stuffed them all under the bed.

After doing all that, Jiang Yong plugged his phone in to charge and called his ex-wife.

He tried several times, but the call was disconnected each time.

"Pick up! Pick up! Just pick up the phone!"

Sweat started beading on Jiang Yong’s forehead.

KNOCK. KNOCK KNOCK.

A knock sounded at the door.

KNOCK. KNOCK KNOCK.

It was slow and rhythmic.

The person outside was toying with him!

Jiang Yong stared in terror at the doorknob.

It was turning.

At that moment, his ex-wife finally picked up.

"What is it now?! Will you ever stop?!"

Jiang Yong said in a rush:

"Honey, I left some money for you under the bed in my rental.

You have to come get it, you absolutely have to!"

The door finally opened.

The man in the yellow suit walked in, a sinister smile on his face.

"Why’d you stop running?"

Jiang Yong stared at him, the corner of his eye twitching uncontrollably.

His ex-wife’s voice came through the phone.

"Jiang Yong, are you in some kind of trouble?"

Though his ex-wife’s voice was distant, the tiny hint of worry in it warmed Jiang Yong’s heart.

Somehow, Jiang Yong was no longer afraid.

He took a deep breath, his expression becoming calm. He pressed the phone tightly to his ear and said in a relaxed tone:

"Honey, I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have gambled.

I know it’s too late to say anything, and I know I can never make it up to you.

I’ve always wanted to apologize, but... I just wasn’t myself back then.

Can you forgive me, honey? You won’t be seeing me again, anyway."

Jiang Yong stared intently at the man in the yellow suit walking toward him and asked, hopefully and cautiously:

"Honey, can you... call me ’husband’ just one more time?"

There was a moment of silence on the other end, then his ex-wife started sobbing and cursing.

"What took you so long! What took you so long! Husband, what’s happening to you?"

A tear rolled from the corner of Jiang Yong’s eye.

"Next time, make sure you marry a good man."

Jiang Yong hung up the phone and glared at the man in the yellow suit, his face contorted with rage.

"You son of a bitch! You want to mess with your daddy?! Come on!

I’m... not afraid of anything anymore!"

The man in the yellow suit raised an eyebrow, a hint of disbelief in his eyes.

"Just because of one phone call?"

Jiang Yong clenched his fists, completely pumped up and ready for a fight.

The man in the yellow suit suddenly clutched his stomach, laughing so hard he couldn’t breathe.

"HAHAHA! HAHAHA! Just because of one phone call?

If I’d known, I would have let you talk a little longer!"

Still clutching his stomach and laughing, the man in the yellow suit pointed a finger at Jiang Yong’s phone.

Jiang Yong froze for a moment, then looked at his phone.

His ex-wife’s voice was coming from the phone:

"Husband, I forgive you, hehehe, I forgive you."

Jiang Yong was stunned.

’What’s going on?’

Jiang Yong suddenly remembered something.

He was deep in debt. He hadn’t paid the water and electricity bills for his rental in three months.

’How could his phone possibly be charging?’

’And how could a dead phone make a call?’

The man in the yellow suit, having had his laugh, straightened up with a playful smirk.

"This humble one studied under the Yin Yang Master Seimei Misawa. I am the Seimei Family’s... number one Illusionist."

In an instant, all the strength left Jiang Yong’s body, and he collapsed onto the floor.

’So, it was all an illusion.’

The jet-black Lucky Star Necklace fell onto the grimy floor.

The color was as black as ink.

’That’s right. How could someone like me, who’s already used up all his luck, possibly earn his wife’s forgiveness?’

Jiang Yong stared blankly as the man in the yellow suit approached.

There was no fear, no despair. Only numbness.
