...

Bai Juzhi trembled, looking at Yang Xiao in disbelief:

"You—you’re lying!

My daughter is in Eros, there’s no way she would come back to the Xia Kingdom!

If she was on that train, I would have been notified before she even boarded!"

Yang Xiao crossed his arms, a smug, shit-eating grin on his face:

"Golden hair, blue eyes.

She’s pretty tall, around five-foot-seven.

When she speaks the Xia language, she’s got a thick Liancheng accent. Her Mandarin isn’t very standard."

Bai Juzhi’s mouth hung wide open.

The girl Happy Ghost described was Bai Tasha!

Bai Juzhi shook his head violently:

"Impossible. She’s not that tall."

Yang Xiao’s expression turned pitying:

"Tsk, tsk, tsk. How many years has it been since you last saw her?"

In an instant, Bai Juzhi’s eyes were completely bloodshot.

’That’s right... how many years has it been since I last saw her?’

’I joined the Anomaly Administration Bureau to resurrect my wife.’

’The first step to becoming an Investigator was to completely cut ties with my former family.’

’I thought that with my status, I could have the Anomaly Administration Bureau take good care of her.’

Yang Xiao suddenly hugged himself, pretending to be in pain. He mimicked a young girl’s voice, shrieking:

"Daddy, save me! Daddy, save me! Someone’s trying to kill me! *Sob, sob,* your men are so mean!"

These words stabbed viciously at Bai Juzhi.

Bai Juzhi clutched his hair in agony.

’Why did this happen?’

’If I had known Bai Tasha was on that train, how could I have ordered them to open fire!?’

’Who had higher authority than me? Who could erase the record of Bai Tasha being on that train?’

Bai Juzhi slowly lowered the hand clutching his hair.

His once refined and scholarly face was now as contorted as a Fierce Ghost’s.

Zhao Pengcheng!

The director of the Anomaly Administration Bureau, Zhao Pengcheng!

’He never intended for me to be reunited with them!’

’He wants... me to be his dog for my entire life!’

A thick, venomous hatred appeared in Bai Juzhi’s eyes:

"I haven’t lost yet. I still have a chance."

Bai Juzhi looked toward the Imperial Capital.

’Now that Dusk has interfered, it’s unrealistic to think I can threaten Cao Ye with the lives of everyone in the South Sea to get him to open the Mother-Child Coffin for me.’

’In that case...’

’I’ll just take it by force!’

’The speed of the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse is enough to get me to the Imperial Capital in no time!’

Bai Juzhi no longer looked at Yang Xiao. He controlled the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse and headed toward the Imperial Capital.

Yang Xiao grinned and said:

"Hey, don’t go. Stick around and chat."

As he spoke, countless Ghost Hands shot out from his back, reaching for Bai Juzhi.

Bai Juzhi glanced at him and struck the Human Skin Drum at his waist.

THUMP...

THUMP-THUMP...

Blood trickled from the corner of Bai Juzhi’s mouth.

The sound of the Human Skin Drum was like a hammer pounding on his own heart.

However, the effect of the Human Skin Drum was also transmitted to others.

Sure enough, Yang Xiao began to dance a bizarre, uncontrolled dance on the rooftop.

Bai Juzhi squeezed his legs against the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse, and it shot swiftly toward the Imperial Capital.

Five minutes later, Bai Juzhi had already reached the edge of the city in the South Sea region.

Suddenly, a Ghost Hand shot up from the ground toward Bai Juzhi.

Bai Juzhi jerked the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse to a higher altitude, barely managing to dodge it.

He looked down in disbelief.

Happy Ghost was speeding along the ground below.

’How can this be?’

’Isn’t he supposed to be dancing on that rooftop?’

After observing carefully, Bai Juzhi’s pupils suddenly contracted!

He saw that Happy Ghost’s arms and legs were as limp as noodles.

He had actually broken his own arms and legs!

With his limbs crippled, he naturally couldn’t continue dancing.

Happy Ghost’s method of movement was this: using several Ghost Hands to support himself on the ground, he scurried toward him like a spider.

Bai Juzhi swallowed hard:

"You lunatic!"

Bai Juzhi bit the tip of his tongue and spat a mouthful of blood onto the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse.

Energized, the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse’s speed surged dramatically.

Bai Juzhi looked back, only to find that Yang Xiao was still stuck to him like glue.

’How is that possible!’

’Even if you really are a Ghost, you shouldn’t be able to match the speed of the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse!’

Little did Bai Juzhi know that Yang Xiao possessed the Magic taught to him by Daji—Shrinking Inches.

Although it consumed a great deal of energy, keeping up with Bai Juzhi for a short period of time was no problem.

Bai Juzhi’s mind raced.

He untied the Human Skin Drum from his waist, struck it heavily once, and then threw the now-continuously-beating drum into the dense forest in the distance.

If no one went to retrieve the Human Skin Drum in time, it would continue to beat on its own indefinitely.

As time went on, the drumbeat would cover a radius of a hundred li.

Sure enough, Yang Xiao stopped chasing him and plunged into the dense forest instead.

Bai Juzhi took a gun from his pocket and shot himself in the palm of his hand.

Blood immediately gushed out.

Not daring to waste it, Bai Juzhi smeared the blood evenly over the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse.

The eyes of the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse flared with red light, and it shot toward the Imperial Capital like a meteor.

...

「Imperial Capital, Anomaly Administration Bureau.」

Bai Juzhi stood at the main entrance.

His hair had turned gray, and his entire being was suffused with an aura of death.

Controlling the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse came at a price: it consumed the user’s lifespan.

At this moment, Bai Juzhi’s life was spent.

He casually tossed the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse by the main entrance, took out his identification, and held it up to the scanner.

CLICK, CLANK...

The giant steel gate opened.

If any other Investigator were returning home, there would be flowers and applause.

But what greeted him was a squad of Investigators, armed with live ammunition.

The looks they gave him were filled with disgust, contempt, and anger, as if they were looking at a maggot.

Bai Juzhi paid no attention to their glares.

He clutched his chest, staggering inside.

The Investigators parted to form a path, the red dots of their laser sights fixed unwaveringly between his brows and on the back of his head.

Bai Juzhi saw Cao Ye behind the crowd. Their eyes met, and he suddenly laughed.

"I’ve lost."

Cao Ye stood with his hands behind his back, his face expressionless:

"No one won."

Bai Juzhi stumbled toward Cao Ye:

"I have no cards left to play. I’m at the end of my rope.

Considering all the missions I’ve completed for the Anomaly Investigation Bureau, could you do me a favor? Just one last thing."

Cao Ye said:

"You still want to use the Mother-Child Coffin, don’t you?"

A pleading, fawning, obsequious smile appeared on Bai Juzhi’s face:

"Please, just once. I promise I’ll only use it once."

Cao Ye let out a soft chuckle:

"No one can use it a second time."

With that, Cao Ye turned and walked toward the archives, his steps steady.

Bai Juzhi followed close behind. Already old and frail, he struggled to keep up, practically breaking into a desperate run.

Finally, they reached the archives.

Bai Juzhi swallowed hard:

"Th... thank you."

Cao Ye took two steps back, unwilling to get too close to the archives.

Bai Juzhi looked back:

"I’ve caused you a lot of trouble over the years."

Cao Ye watched him with indifference.

It was hard to imagine that this refined, cultured man was a Demon reeking of blood.

Bai Juzhi took a piece of paper from his coat and handed it to Cao Ye:

"This is a plan I drew up against Dusk. I never had the chance to implement it, but it might be of some help to you."

Cao Ye took the paper but didn’t look at it, his eyes fixed on Bai Juzhi.

Bai Juzhi, his back hunched, walked into the archive room.

In a room full of antiques, a black cat sensed his arrival, lifted its head to glance at Bai Juzhi, then lay back down to sleep.

Bai Juzhi paid the cat no mind. After passing through several empty rooms, he saw a room with glass walls on all four sides.

Inside that room lay two black coffins, one large and one small.

Large lights on all sides simulated sunlight, bathing the room in a golden glow.

Bai Juzhi smiled. He eagerly reached a hand toward the room, as if trying to grasp the light in his palm.

He quickened his pace, stumbling forward.

In the light, he seemed to see a gentle foreign woman.

Bai Juzhi’s smile was radiant.

He walked into the room. It was warm, just like the weather on his wedding day.

With great effort, he lifted the lid of the mother coffin, clutched a lock of hair, and lay down inside.

He placed the lock of hair on his chest.

’So tired.’

’I never got a proper night’s sleep when I was a teacher, and I never slept enough as an Investigator either.’

Bai Juzhi took a gun from his pocket, pressed it to his forehead, and said softly:

"Good night, Juzhi."

He pulled the trigger.

Blood sprayed across the coffin wood.

Soon, the blood bizarrely seeped into the wood, as if it were being devoured.

Cao Ye, watching this scene on the monitor outside, spoke with indifference:

"Seal the coffin."

Several Investigators rushed into the room containing the Mother-Child Coffin.

Other Investigators carried the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse from outside back to the archives.

No one noticed that the pupils of the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse had changed.

They were supposed to be black, artificial, clearly painted-on black pupils.

But now, those pupils were tiny black smiley faces.
