Chapter 100: Chapter 97: Gift

South Sea Public Security Bureau. Conference room.

Sun Desheng, the Bureau’s director, was gathered with the members of the Dusk Investigation Team and one of Bai Juzhi’s assistants, Zhang Xiao’Er.

Besides the Sea Train incident, another major event was happening tonight.

The head of the Dusk Investigation Team, Bai Juzhi, who temporarily held the highest administrative authority in the South Sea, had finally arrived.

Bai Juzhi stood with his hands in his pockets.

"Dusk..."

He continued:

"There have been two anomalous incidents in the South Sea, and Dusk managed to arrive swiftly each time.

I suspect that Dusk is based deep within the South Sea.

Dusk has a team of Extraordinary Beings; it’s unlikely they live in a busy urban area.

Therefore, the places I’ve marked are all possible locations where Dusk might be residing.

These locations are inconspicuous enough and large enough to accommodate an organization."

Bai Juzhi pointed to an urban village on the map.

"There’s a three percent probability they’re here."

He then pointed to a large, abandoned amusement park.

"The probability they’re here is one percent."

He pointed to several more places in succession, stating the calculated probability for each.

The location with the highest probability was Anxiang Street, which was slated to be redeveloped into the Nationalist Era Charm Street. It had a full ten percent probability.

Sun Desheng frowned.

"These are all key investment projects for the South Sea.

Are you demanding their reconstruction to leave Dusk with nowhere to hide? To force Dusk out into the open?"

Bai Juzhi nodded.

"Correct. That is my reasoning."

Bai Juzhi didn’t trust the people from the Public Security Bureau, so he only told them half the story.

The only place he truly cared about was Anxiang Street.

Due to its geographical location and history, Anxiang Street was an ideal place for Dusk to hide.

The area was also managed by the World Dream Group, and the group’s president, Xia Li, had fallen gravely ill a few months ago.

ALS combined with a severe congenital heart defect—it was basically a death sentence.

The strange thing was, she had made a miraculous recovery and swiftly regained control of World Dream!

Putting all these clues together, it was hard for Bai Juzhi not to grow suspicious.

That was why he would be watching Anxiang Street closely.

The reconstruction of the other abandoned sites was merely a smokescreen, meant to hide his true objective.

Sun Desheng considered this for a moment.

"Alright."

Bai Juzhi pushed up his glasses.

"One more thing. My people will be arriving in the South Sea in succession.

However, we will not be staying at the accommodations arranged by the Public Security Bureau.

If there’s anything we need your cooperation on, please don’t be careless."

Sun Desheng and the other high-ranking officials of the South Sea Public Security Bureau looked furious.

’It’s bad enough that he came here bossing us around, but now he’s refusing the accommodations we’ve arranged?’

’Isn’t this a blatant show of distrust in the Public Security Bureau?’

Just then, someone’s eyes widened, and they pointed a trembling finger at the large screen.

"Wh-what is that?"

Bai Juzhi frowned and turned to look.

On the large screen was a ghostly face—a face made of shadows!

Bai Juzhi’s pupils contracted.

’Have they made their move so soon?’

Bai Juzhi shot a sidelong glance at Sun Desheng.

’Do you think your Public Security Bureau is trustworthy?’

’The enemy waltzed into your bureau as if they owned the place!’

After his anger passed, Sun Desheng was completely embarrassed.

The ghostly face changed, morphing into a line of text.

"Hello, Bai Juzhi."

Bai Juzhi took two steps back, stepping off the podium to maintain a safe distance from the shadow on the large screen.

"Who are you?"

The shadow:

"Mr. Dusk’s most loyal servant, the Happy Ghost."

Bai Juzhi secretly glanced at Zhang Xiao’Er beside him.

Zhang Xiao’Er nodded slightly and pointed to his chest, indicating that the camera had been on the whole time.

The shadow: "Trying to film me? Why not do it openly? I think I’m quite good-looking."

Bai Juzhi asked:

"What is your objective?"

The shadow:

"Hee hee hee, are you satisfied with your gift?

Mr. Dusk saved so many passengers. That must have been a great help to you, right?

Mr. Dusk sent me to check in on them. Are they doing well?"

Although the words appeared as text on the screen, it was as if they could clearly hear the Happy Ghost’s mocking tone.

Bai Juzhi said calmly:

"Is that all you came to say? To make a power play against me?"

Bai Juzhi did not regret ordering the deaths of those passengers.

Those people had been in contact with Dusk; they absolutely could not be left alive.

No one could say what kind of tricks Dusk had up his sleeve.

He had told Zhang Xiao’Er to leave one person alive.

That survivor had died inexplicably.

This only made Bai Juzhi more certain that the passengers were a useless liability.

Because his opponent was unwilling to let him obtain any more information.

The shadow:

"Of course not. How could our generous Mr. Dusk give you only one gift?

There are four gifts in total! Four!

Oh my goodness! Unlike you, who didn’t bring any gifts at all!"

Bai Juzhi’s face was grim.

"I’m all ’eyes’."

The shadow:

"There are followers of the Taiping Dao near the South Sea. One of them is even a minor leader, codenamed Prince Qilin."

Bai Juzhi stared at the shadow, his thoughts unreadable.

The shadow:

"(╯°□°)╯!!!! You guys actually don’t know about the Taiping Dao?!

Fine, you’re even more useless than I thought.

In short, they’re a bunch of lunatics who possess Taboo Items.

They use Qing Dynasty official titles as codenames. Who knows, maybe they want to restore the monarchy!"

Bai Juzhi’s brows furrowed deeply.

An Investigator had once returned to headquarters severely injured, and later died from his wounds.

He had mentioned the Taiping Dao, but only in fragments, without any valuable information.

If it was really as the ’shadow’ said, then it was indeed something that demanded their attention.

’But why would the ’shadow’ reveal this information to them?’

’Is it trying to get us to kill its enemies for it?’

Bai Juzhi said:

"Alright, I understand. Time for the third gift."

The shadow:

"Since your name is Bai Juzhi, why don’t you check who was on that train? You might find a surprise."

Bai Juzhi’s mind spun slowly.

He already knew who was on the train.

They were all ordinary people who wouldn’t affect the mission.

Otherwise, he would never have given the order to eliminate the passengers.

’The shadow’s words were either meant to taunt me further or were just a bluff.’

Bai Juzhi said:

"Anything else you’d care to enlighten me on?"

The shadow:

"The last gift is from me, personally. I hope you’ll take it seriously."

Bai Juzhi narrowed his eyes.

"What is it?"

The shadow:

"FUCK YOU."

The shadow vanished.

A vein throbbed wildly on Bai Juzhi’s temple. His eyes were terrifyingly cold as he bit out, word by word:

"I will find you."

No one else dared to speak.

This method of communication... it was just too bizarre.

It was a form of reverence born from the unknown, from Supernatural Power.

...

Outside the Public Security Bureau, in a Mercedes-Benz van.

The vehicle had been purchased by another of Bai Juzhi’s assistants.

Zhang Xiao’Er was in the driver’s seat, a burly man with a scarred face sat in the passenger seat, and Bai Juzhi was in the back.

Bai Juzhi held a map, studying it for a long while before speaking.

"Notify all members of the Dusk Investigation Team to assemble at the Night Bar."

Xiao’Er glanced back at Bai Juzhi.

"Boss, is this to make it easier to monitor Anxiang Street?"

The Night Bar was located near Anxiang Street.

The foot traffic was heavy, making it easy to conduct an investigation without being noticed.

Using that bar as a base of operations would be the best way to monitor Anxiang Street.

Bai Juzhi nodded.

"Correct. From now on, the main focus of our investigation will be Anxiang Street."

Xiao’Er thought for a moment, then said:

"So, you believe Dusk is in Anxiang Street, then?"

Bai Juzhi put down the map and replied:

"I’m not certain. There’s only a ten percent possibility."

Xiao’Er asked dubiously:

"In that case, focusing all our efforts on Anxiang Street... isn’t that a waste of energy?"

Bai Juzhi gazed out the window at the night sky and said faintly:

"Xiao’Er, you can’t think of Dusk as just one person.

Based on all his actions, you could very well think of him as a god."
