Chapter 285: Close Call [1]
Chapter 285: Close Call [1]
CATHERINE
“Are you sure this is a knife wound?”
“Yes…” I replied.
I was surprised by how my voice came out stronger.
My entire nerves were out of place, and it was certainly a welcome development that I wasn’t freaking the fuck out.
Ares kept his gaze on my hand, and his observation was becoming too dubious.
“How was work?” I asked to distract him.
“The usual”
The usual?
Was a shootout the usual? Jesus! I underestimated the lengths of the underworld. Something like this was just a normal Monday for him, while it felt like I was fighting for my life.
I wonder what could have happened if I hadn’t smashed the decanter on the assailant’s head and run away.
Well, I know one thing… My husband would have caught me, and God knows he would have recognized me at first glance.
I don’t think any amount of makeup or contacts would keep Ares King from figuring it out, not to mention when I talked, even if I try to mask my voice, he would still know.
I need to be careful.
I hissed softly when he put a Band-Aid on my cut.
“You should be more careful…”
I blushed. Exactly what I thought. Now I felt like a child who was caught playing with knives.
“Are you still hungry?”
I’m starving. That escape took a lot out of me.
I licked my lips, nodding.
“Sit.”
I did so obediently, not having the heart to disagree. My body ached, and it felt like I had hit a train or something. The amount of speed I possessed to get rid of any evidence of my involvement tonight would surely hit the world record.
Ares took off his coat and suit jacket, placing them neatly on the chair, smoothing them out. This was a pattern I had caught from him, and I knew where it originated from now.
His need for order… and control. Those things were his Achilles heel.
I smiled softly, admiring as he unbuttoned his shirt and proceeded to roll the sleeves up those corded arms I pictured holding my throat.
I scanned for any hint of injury, but there was none. I need to call on Athena too to check up on her. I was supposed to have a meeting while watching Ares from the second floor.
It was amusing for me that he kept searching for me, so I grew tempted and sent him a card to mess with his head.
There was something about being a mystery that was just hot! His dangerous gaze roaming, the way he controlled the room, the tension, and god so help me, how indifferent he was to the world, and yet here he was making me dinner like it was the most important task of the evening.
My pussy pulsed, and I tried to calm my pearls before I jumped at him, but calming wasn’t gonna help me. Tonight was a full-on adrenaline rush, and I’m yet to come down from it. The rush from almost being killed and caught.
This shit is stressing me out.
The soft clang brought me back, and I focused more on Ares than my thoughts; those were for later, for now, I’m just gonna sit here and enjoy dinner.
My stomach growled as whatever Ares got cooking drowned my nose. God, that smells so good.
“Are you done yet, honey?” I asked, stretching my head to see, but his frame covered the stove.
“No…”
I pouted, waiting patiently. Ares was swift, taking charge of the kitchen, and it was even more sexy seeing him chop.
After a few more minutes, Ares dropped a plate of rice, eggs, and veggies, in small portions. I’m drooling already.
I picked up my spoon and went digging, moaning at the taste. Ares grabbed a champagne and popped the lid open, filling the glass with red wine.
“I’m such a bad wife,” I said with a mouthful. “After a long day, you’re making me dinner, and here I’m stuffing my mouth like a pig.”
“I’m not complaining.”
“Aren’t you hungry?”
“I’ll have my dinner after you have had yours.”
My eyes scanned for another plate of food, but I didn’t find any. “Don’t tell me you’re going for ice cream.”
“Your pussy.”
I choked, rushing to grab the wine to flush it down.
“Y-You can’t be serious!”
Ares smirked. “When you’re done, lie down on the counter and spread your legs.”
“My cum is not dinner!”
“I disagree.” He brought the glass to his lips, not taking his eyes off me as he took a sip.
Fuck! I’m wet already. Ever since I set my eyes on him playing poker with Athena. I was envious because I pictured myself there playing that game… and the stakes were much higher.
Will he go easy on me or hard?
I got jittery just by thinking about it, but the feeling died too quickly, knowing that the moment he finds out I’m Vixen or that I had connections with the underworld, he wouldn’t take it lightly.
I’ll be in deep shit.
I ate the rest of dinner, finishing it up with the wine, and I’m full, food no longer on my mind.
Ares and I exchanged heated glances before he stood, and my heart raced. I stood too, but he seized my waist and placed me on the counter, stepping between my legs.
“Have I told you that you look beautiful tonight?”
“With my bird nest hair?”
He took off my glass and set it aside, his eyes narrowing when he caught something. “Your eyes are red.”
“T-They are itchy nowadays…”
The daily usage of contacts was irritating my eyes.
“I’ll make an appointment with the doctor.”
“Don’t worry about it. It will pass, and um speaking of doctors… I haven’t made that appointment.”
“And?”
I blushed. “You know what that means, honey…”
“I do.” He tucked the strands of my hair behind my ear
The silence was heavy between us, our gaze locked until I found the will to speak.
“Do you want a baby?”
