Chapter 1349: Chapter 331: Bloody Battle (Part 2)

The trebuchets of the Yan Army began to push upwards bit by bit, launching one round after another, albeit at a slow pace, but with a good rhythm.

Liang Cheng once used a metaphor with Lord Zheng, saying that when two armies confront each other, it is like a pianist playing, where everything must be in tune.

No matter the situation faced, if one’s mind is composed, perhaps not creating strokes of genius, but at least responding with soldiers to block, soil to cover water;

If the rhythm is lost, then chaos and mistakes are inevitable.

Later, Lord Zheng took this saying and handed it over to Tian Wujing, just replacing the piano with a guzheng.

Now, as the Yan Army lays siege, accompanied by drumbeats, step by step, each troop follows, indeed methodically.

However, within East Mountain Fortress, the trebuchets of the Chu people remained still; certainly present, but the Chu people’s ability to hold their position was unsettling.

Not that one thinks the Chu people’s trebuchets are superior in performance; with San’er’s design added to the craftsmanship of the Tianji Pavilion members, Lord Zheng believes his trebuchets are among the best of the age.

But the patience of the Chu people causes one to instinctively look up occasionally;

Having previously been kindly greeted by a trebuchet, Lord Zheng has developed some psychological shadows regarding them.

At this time,

The arrow towers began moving forward, a solution born of necessity, knowing the Chu people’s trebuchets might target these towers, yet one can’t be deterred by potential threats; the attack must continue.

Guo Dong and Hui An, along with the auxiliary troops, moved up; they carried no weapons, only holding shields, advancing in formation.

However, letting Guo Dong and Hui An breathe easier, their group of a hundred men was stationed in front or behind the arrow tower, using one hand to push the tower while holding shields.

With such a large object of refuge, it could completely block arrows from one side, allowing them to use shields to protect the other side, lending a sense of security.

Yet, despite this, feeling the arrows constantly striking their shields, each forceful impact made their arms numb and hearts tremble.

After all, this was Guo Dong and Hui An’s first true battlefield experience.

On the walls, the Chu’s counterattack capabilities were unlike practicing on the snowfields with wild people as targets; their weapons are more refined.

"Dongzi, move this way, come closer to me, hurry!"

Hui An shouted to Guo Dong ahead.

With the tower continuously moving forward, their positions around it shifted constantly, inevitably causing some to fall behind or stumble, or through misfortune, get hit by arrows and fall, creating unexpected gaps and vulnerabilities.

Upon hearing, Guo Dong quickly stepped back two steps, sticking close to Hui An.

Previously fueled by watermelon blood,

Guo Dong became more cautious upon entering the battlefield environment.

Not that the watermelon blood’s effect faded quickly, but here apart from protecting the tower from advancing and covering those pushing it, they had no means of counterattack.

If one remains passively under attack without reciprocal action, it often brings immense mental pressure.

"Buzz!"

From the walls, a giant crossbow bolt shot forth.

It struck a fellow soldier before Guo Dong, shattering his shield unable to withstand the impact, piercing his chest, pinning him against the tower’s side.

Although having a tower for protection, they were often specially targeted by the Chu defenders on the walls; fortune and calamity intertwined.

"Form ranks, pull it out!"

The squad leader shouted, simultaneously leading several nearby men to shift outward, raising their shields.

Normally, if a bolt hits other parts of the tower, there’s little issue; even with a body attached, it poses minimal problems, given the tower is occupied by archers.

But this body pinned so close to the wheel might jam it, making it difficult for the force behind to push.

Hui An let out a low shout, tossing the shield aside, grabbing the bolt with both hands, using all his strength to yank it out.

Perhaps because the bolt had already pierced through the shield and a person’s body, coupled with the angle of penetration, though deep, the other end protruded; thus, with effort and a sideways turn, the giant bolt fell off.

The body of the fellow soldier followed, tearing at his wound when pulling out the bolt, effectively gutting him anew, spilling intestines right over Hui An’s face.

Phew...

Without delay, Hui An didn’t dare spend extra time wiping his face but immediately lay down, reaching for his discarded shield to raise high in front as trained.

Guo Dong approached, allowing his ally to catch his breath.

"Next time we’ll pull together!"

Initially, when Hui An acted, Guo Dong hadn’t reacted, yet upon seeing Hui An brazenly yank the bolt without any shield, Guo Dong’s heart leapt to his throat.
