The Demon Lords

Chapter 1248: Chapter 307: Lackey (Part 3)
Back in the day, the knights of the Three Jin were incredibly proud, yet they were still defeated by the Yan people.
And behind Town South Pass, the Shanggu County of the Chu State is a vast expanse. Once the Yan people break through Town South Pass, their cavalry can swiftly sweep out, relying on the terrain of Shanggu County to carve a piece off the Chu State.
Nian Yao slowly opened his eyes again,
extended his hand,
rubbed his brow,
and said:
"This time, it depends on who places their bets more quickly and aggressively at the gambling table. But the problem is, I know the Emperor of the Yan State is indisputable within his state. After the demise of the Yan aristocracy, unless Li Liangting or Tian Wujing suddenly rebel, no individual or force within Yan can challenge his authority......"
Upon reaching this point,
Nian Yao’s eyes started to redden slightly, looking somewhat ferocious:
"What I fear the most now is that the Yan people might actually dare to risk everything, or, based on the timing of the military intelligence relayed back, it’s conceivable that the Yan might already be risking it all......"
Nian Yao paused,
gritting his teeth,
word by word he said:
"And our king needs to first convene the internal great aristocrats to hold discussions, negotiating with the great aristocrats on how many soldiers, how much grain, and how many civilian laborers each family should contribute!"
During the process of the Chu State court’s power being strengthened due to the chaos among princes and the regent ascending, some aristocrats who supported princes for the throne were purged.
But overall, the power of the Chu State’s aristocracy remains strong and cannot be ignored.
If the Yan people initiate a real national war, relying solely on the court’s power is insufficient.
"Brother Nian, such words are not ours to say." Deng Man said with concern in his eyes.
Nian Yao smiled lightly, saying: "I know."
Immediately afterward, Deng Man seemed to have discovered something, looking outside the carriage, asked: "Brother Nian, isn’t this road leading to the palace?"
"I need to return home first, change into my court robe, and then enter the palace to meet the king."
"This......"
"It won’t make a difference with this bit of time; as I said, we should take it easy, regardless of what’s happening with the Yan people, we ourselves must not lose composure."
"But the king didn’t instruct me of this when he sent me to find you, Brother Nian."
"Because the king knows that I know what to do."
The carriage,
drove into the general’s residence.
When Nian Yao got off the carriage, he told Deng Man: "Go back to the palace first; I’ll follow shortly, exiting from the back."
"Yes."
Deng Man could only leave from the back and report back to the palace.
Nian Yao then entered the inner courtyard, where his wife Mrs. Sun was playing with their son and daughter.
Seeing Nian Yao return, Mrs. Sun stood up and said: "Well, you dare to take that scoundrel out for a play without telling me."
The ’scoundrel’ refers to Mrs. Sun’s brother.
Nian Yao shook his head and said: "Couldn’t always keep him cooped up in the residence."
"He is unruly, and this is Ing Capital City. Knowing that you are the general, back home he had already begun oppressing men and women, even the county magistrate didn’t dare control him, so I had someone bring him to Ing Capital City, yet you still took him out for nonsense."
"Alas."
Nian Yao sighed,
first kicking a bamboo ball on the ground, his son and daughter immediately ran to retrieve it;
while Nian Yao, took the opportunity to kiss Mrs. Sun on the cheek.
As Mrs. Sun came to her senses, she immediately pinched Nian Yao, saying scornfully: "What mischief are you up to?"
"Hehe, just can’t help it seeing my beautiful wife."
Though they had been married a long time, Mrs. Sun’s face still turned a little red upon hearing this,
and she said:
"What about that scoundrel, didn’t he come back with you?"
"I came back first, need to change clothes and enter the palace to meet the master, he’s still drinking by Mee River."
"Mee River is full of nobles, you can’t leave him alone there, he might easily offend......"
"Oh, dear wife, all these achievements your man has earned out there fighting tooth and nail, someone has to help us put on a good front, otherwise I always feel like we’re short-changed."
"What kind of logic is that?"
"It’s the logic of my Nian family."
"You’re indulging him."
"It’s not about indulging him; it’s about indulging myself. In this life, being used to being a servant, even as a general, some habits just don’t change.
So, when I look at him, I feel like I’m seeing another version of myself."
"Here you go again with your strange words, what’s wrong with being a servant, we come from the master’s private servants, others are envious that they can’t be like us."
"Yes yes, my dear wife, but your brother is like my brother, how can I not be good to him? Alright alright, hurry up and get my court robe, can’t keep the master waiting."
With Mrs. Sun’s help, Nian Yao changed into his court robe, got on his horse, gathered his entourage of guards from the mansion, and proudly headed toward the palace gate.
Xiong Liqing once said, compared to the palace of the Chu State, the palace of the Yan State seemed humble.
And it is indeed true,
the palace walls and gates of the Chu State exude an aura of grandeur and elegancy.
At the palace gate, General Nian was already granted the privilege to ride inside the palace, yet he still dismounted voluntarily, entering on foot.
He had a premonition,
this time,
it truly felt like a storm was brewing inside the building.
So, somehow, this time entering the palace, his heart suddenly became more pensive.
He remembered,
just the year before last,
when he captured the second prince,
asking the master:
Master, perhaps we should emulate Yan State and also get rid of the troublesome ones within our state.
The master asked him: why is your servant suddenly speaking with such great boldness today?
He replied: It’s because I, the servant, think the master should be the undisputed ruler of this great Chu!
Later,
because the Yan people suddenly broke through Jin land, forcing many of the regent’s plans at home to come to naught, they had to first ask Qu TianNan to lead troops north.
Nian Yao arrived in front of the main hall,
looking at the gold and jade bricks above, squinting his eyes slightly.
In truth, that day, he didn’t tell the master the truth.
The reason he, Nian Yao, suddenly asked that question was,
because,
as he saw it,
if that troublesome bunch of aristocrats within the Chu State were swept away,
then he, Nian Yao,
would no longer be a servant.

I recently started attending a writing workshop, where I have classes for half a day every morning, affecting updates, coupled with forcibly adjusting to an overly normal routine which still requires adaptation.
Just one Chapter today, a big Chapter tomorrow.
And for this major plot arc, I wish to set it up well and write carefully, hence the unavoidable slower pace, I ask for everyone’s understanding, after all, slow work yields fine craft.
