The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign
Chapter 316: The Spirit Soul Awakening
Kael felt his mana core and soul were merging at a fundamental level. At the Spirit Soul Realm, the soul became infused with mana and rule power, creating a "Spirit Soul"—a hybrid of spiritual energy and mana that was qualitatively superior to both. It was the difference between a sharpened blade and a blade forged from a fallen star.
The comprehended rule power became the foundation of the Spirit Soul. It was the bedrock upon which the new existence was built. The cultivator’s rule power deepened based on what they understood about their abilities. For someone like Kael, who had walked multiple paths simultaneously, his understanding of his abilities had become profound. His Lightning Rule Power, already at the Resonance step, deepened further as the Spirit Soul formation forced every fragment of comprehension to the surface.
The Spirit Soul Realm became a realm for the comprehension of rule power. A full understanding of rule power must reach the fifth step to achieve a breakthrough to the Origin Realm. The first step was Spark. The second was Resonance. The third was Articulation.
All kinds of mana gathered around him.
Dark mana—SHRRR—swirled in ribbons of absolute black, carrying the consuming, devouring nature of his shadow abilities. Fire mana—FWOOM—danced in purple-black tendrils, radiating the primordial heat of the Demonic Asura Lotus Flame. Lightning mana—CRACKLE, ZAP—sparked in brilliant blue-white arcs, each bolt carrying the destructive fury of a lightning god. Gravity mana—HUMMM—pulled everything inward, bending light and distorting space in shimmering waves around his body.
The four manas intertwined, clashed, merged, and separated in a continuous, violent dance. The scene was kaleidoscopic—a swirling, pulsing sphere of multicolored energy that lit up the dying sub-realm like a second sun. The remnants of the cocoon around him cracked and splintered—CRACK, CRACK—unable to contain the sheer density of energy being generated inside.
A week passed.
Kael sat at the epicenter of the mana storm, his body motionless, his consciousness focused entirely on the fusion occurring within. His Transcendent Core spun at impossible speeds, its 480% capacity straining under the weight of four elemental manas being compressed into a single, unified force. His soul pulsed in his soul space, the Peak Soul Manifestation form vibrating at a frequency that threatened to shatter his spiritual foundation.
Then it happened.
A special, radiant ring of darkness manifested behind his back. It was a halo of absolute dark. Purple-black energy condensed into a perfect circle, rotating slowly behind him like the eye of a cosmic storm. The ring pulsed once—HUMMM—sending a shockwave that flattened the remaining terrain in a hundred-meter radius. The air itself seemed to darken, as if the concept of light was being consumed.
The ring held for three seconds before dissipating, its energy absorbed back into Kael’s body.
Kael opened his eyes.
They glowed with a deep, shimmering violet—the fusion of all his elements, the visual manifestation of his Spirit Soul. The glow faded after a moment, returning to his natural silver-flecked gray, but the power behind them remained.
A system notification flashed in his mind.
[Spirit Soul Rank 1.]
[Breakthrough complete.]
[Reward: 40,000 Shadow Credits. Available only when System Evolution is complete.]
[System Evolution: 2 months remaining.]
Kael exhaled slowly as a thin stream of purple-black vapor that dissipated into the air. He stood up.
His body floated into the air, gravity bending to his will. The surrounding area was completely destroyed—the ancient dwarven city was gone, reduced to rubble and molten stone. The sub-realm’s structure had deteriorated further during his breakthrough, the pocket dimension barely holding together. Spatial cracks—jagged, shimmering tears in reality—dotted the landscape like wounds in fabric.
His hair had grown past his shoulders during the months inside the cocoon. The purple-black streaks from the flame’s integration ran through his dark hair, visible only when the light caught them at certain angles.
The remnants of the cocoon around him compressed—SHRINK—then shattered—CRACK, SHATTER—fragments of purple-black fire scattering into nothing.
Kael looked around. Multiple spatial cracks surrounded him, each one a jagged tear in the fabric of the collapsing sub-realm. Through the cracks, with his spirit eyes, he could see glimpses of other terrains—forests, mountains, deserts—fragments of the larger Void Realm that existed beyond this dying pocket dimension.
He thought about his situation. With the Heavenly Flame integrated into his body and his Mid Tier 5 physique, he could likely survive passing through a spatial crack without sustaining permanent injuries. But each crack was a gamble—going through any of them could drop him anywhere in the Void Realm. There was no controlling the destination.
He calculated the time. He had already spent nine months taming the Heavenly Flame and breaking through to the Spirit Soul Realm. There was only one month left before the Void Realm gates opened for departure.
Kael coated his body with his golden aura—HUMMM—and wrapped it in a layer of dense mana. He chose a spatial crack that pulsed with relatively stable energy and stepped through.
The moment he crossed the threshold, the pressure hit him like a mountain falling on his shoulders. The spatial tear’s interior was a void of crushing, contradictory forces—space itself folding and unfolding simultaneously. His aura barrier cracked—CRACK—and his mana barrier splintered—CRACK, CRACK—in the first second.
Kael’s eyes widened. He had underestimated the pressure. Spatial tears weren’t simply holes in space—they were active wounds in reality, and the energy required to pass through them was far greater than he had calculated.
He immediately intensified both barriers. His aura flared—FWOOM—the golden light hardening to a dense shell around his body. His mana surged, reinforcing the barrier with layers of gravity-compressed energy. The Transcendent Core pumped mana at maximum output, maintaining the dual defense as the spatial tear tried to crush him from every direction.
A few moments later, toward the northern direction of the Void Realm, a spatial crack tore open in the sky above a dense forest. Kael fell through—WHOOSH—his body plummeting toward the ground. He hit the earth—BOOM—a crater forming beneath him, dirt and rock exploding outward in a radial pattern.
Kael stood up from the crater. His body was riddled with minor cracks and cuts—spatial damage that had penetrated his barriers despite his precautions. But his Void Body Refinement immediately went to work. The injuries closed—HEAL, HEAL—flesh knitting together, bones mending, the purple-black fire energy in his blood accelerating the regeneration.
He looked around. He extended his soul sense—120 meters of perception sweeping the landscape. No cultivators within range. Beasts, yes—plenty of them, but nothing above Rank 6.
He pulled out the map he had obtained from Golgoth’s pagoda and studied it. The closest location to his current position was Golgoth’s Domain. The next nearest sub-realms were those of Vaelthor and the Everglade Sovereign, both significantly farther.
Kael sighed wishing he landed somewhere he hadn’t explored yet.
Kael decided. Golgoth’s Domain. The murals there had already deepened his Slaughter Intent and taught him techniques. Returning there would allow him to further temper his rule powers and intent while hunting for powerful souls to feed the Netherworld Soul Locking Flag. He still had space for more souls, and the flag’s power scaled with its occupants.
He flew toward Golgoth’s Domain.
Kael spent the time productively. He meditated at the Mural Mountain, studying the ancient depictions of sword, blade, and rule power intents. His Gravity Rule and Lightning Rule both deepened, pushing further into the Resonance step. He hunted beasts and cultivators alike, adding seven more souls to the Soul Locking Flag—bringing the total to thirty.
A month went by quickly.
Then the gates appeared.
More than six gates materialized in different locations across the Void Realm—massive, crystalline portals that hummed with temporal energy. The portals would only remain open for two weeks. After that, the Void Realm would seal itself, and anyone still inside would be trapped for years until the next opening cycle.
Days passed. Cultivators trickled toward the gates, presenting their tokens. Runes blazed on each token—BLAZE—as the holder was teleported back to their point of origin. Most decided against engaging in conflict now. The Void Realm had taken its toll. Everyone had lost something—comrades, treasures, limbs. The desire to leave with what they had outweighed the greed to take from others.
Kael arrived at one of the gates. He stood to the side, his arms crossed, his presence drawing nervous glances from passing cultivators.
Rue and Sage were somewhere in the Void Realm. They had separated months ago to explore different ruins. Kael had inscribed tracking runes on both of them before they parted, and he could sense that both were heading toward this gate.
Hours passed. Cultivators came and went through the gate. Kael recognized a few faces—Garrett De Vorn, who nodded curtly before presenting his token and disappearing. Valerius Kaine, who limped slightly but otherwise seemed intact. Mason Croft, who seemed to have grown significantly clearly pushed him through significant growth.
Suddenly the sky darkened.
A dark, oppressive aura descended from above—RUMBLE—a pressure so intense that every cultivator near the gate stumbled, their knees buckling. The weaker ones collapsed entirely, their bodies trembling uncontrollably. Even the stronger cultivators—Spirit Soul Rank 1 and 2—felt their hearts clench with primal, instinctive fear.
A figure appeared in the sky above the gate.
Three meters tall. Two dark horns curving upward from his temples. A face that was relatively handsome marked with demonic ridges along the cheekbones. A pair of massive dark wings spread behind him, each one spanning six meters, their surfaces shimmering with an oily, iridescent sheen.
He hovered in the air, looking down at the cultivators below with an expression of casual contempt. His aura pressed down on the gathering like the weight of a collapsed mountain.
The gate’s crystalline surface flickered—FZZT—destabilizing slightly under the figure’s oppressive presence.
Every cultivator froze.
Kael looked up at the horned figure, his silver-flecked eyes narrowing. His Spirit Soul Rank 1 aura stirred in response to the pressure, pushing back against the demonic presence instinctively.
