The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

Chapter 275: The Soul Mirror Labyrinth

Kael walked the corridor in silence.

He reached the end. A door—simpler than the entrance, carved from the same black marble. He pushed it open.

The corridor opened into a massive circular chamber.

Kael stopped.

The chamber was enormous—easily a hundred meters in diameter. The ceiling was so high it vanished into darkness above. The floor was covered in runic circles that pulsed with faint blue light. Seven corridors branched outward from the chamber, each one identical—dark, narrow, featureless.

Whirrr.

The mechanical voice returned.

[SECOND TRIAL: THE SOUL MIRROR LABYRINTH.]

[THE TRIAL TESTS SOUL PERCEPTION AND SOUL CONTROL. CANDIDATE MUST NAVIGATE THE LABYRINTH USING ONLY SOUL SENSE. PHYSICAL SIGHT WILL BE SEALED. MANA SENSE WILL BE SEALED. ONLY THE SOUL CAN GUIDE YOU.]

[RULES:]

[SEVEN CORRIDORS. ONE CORRECT PATH. SIX LEAD TO SOUL TRAPS THAT WILL SEVERELY DAMAGE THE CANDIDATE’S SOUL.]

[THE LABYRINTH SHIFTS EVERY THREE MINUTES.]

[SOUL BEASTS PATROL THE LABYRINTH—CONSTRUCTS MADE OF CONDENSED SOUL ENERGY. THEY WILL ATTACK ON SIGHT.]

[TOUCHING THE SOUL WALLS CAUSES DIRECT SOUL DAMAGE.]

[TIME LIMIT: ONE HOUR. FAILURE TO REACH THE CENTER WITHIN THE TIME LIMIT RESULTS IN BEING TRAPPED IN THE LABYRINTH FOREVER.]

[SOUL BEASTS WILL BE WITHIN CANDIDATE’S SOUL CULTIVATION.]

[TRIAL BEGINS NOW.]

Kael’s vision went black.

His mana core sealed.

He immediately loss access to his gravity, lightning and darkness powers.

Everything he relied on was stripped away.

Only two things remained: his soul power and his body cultivation.

What if I wasn’t a soul cultivator? Kael thought as he sighed in relief, It’s a good thing I decided to cultivate the soul path.

This trial was designed for soul cultivators specifically. Anyone else would fail immediately.

His world shifted.

His soul sense became his eyes. Soul energy rendered everything in spiritual outlines—walls, corridors, the faint pulse of the runic floor. Colors were different here. The walls appeared as solid masses of dense soul energy—deep blue, pulsing. The corridors stretched outward in seven directions, each one a path of slightly less dense energy.

Kael mapped the layout instantly. Seven corridors. One correct.

He extended his soul sense in a 45 meter range—and began scanning each corridor.

The first corridor extended thirty meters before ending in a wall of volatile soul energy. A trap. The second was similar. The third branched twice—both branches ending in traps.

The fourth corridor...

There.

Forty meters in, the corridor curved. Beyond the curve—more corridor. A path forward. The correct one.

Kael moved toward the fourth corridor.

He kept his distance from the walls. Touching them would send pain directly through his soul.

He entered the fourth corridor.

WHUM.

The labyrinth shifted.

The corridor behind him rearranged. Walls moved—sliding, rotating, reconfiguring. His mental map became instantly obsolete.

Three minutes per shift. I need to move fast.

Kael re-mapped using soul sense. The corridor ahead had changed—the curve was gone, replaced by a straight path with a single branch to the left. He scanned both options. The straight path continued beyond his range. The branch ended in a trap.

He went straight.

Then he felt them.

Four signatures.

Soul beasts.

Wolf-shaped constructs materialized from the walls—condensed soul energy given form. Their bodies were semi-transparent, their eyes burning with blue light. They moved silently.

Early to Late Soul Core realm.

Kael didn’t hesitate.

"SOUL SPIKE!"

Pzt-pzt-pzt!

Three spikes launched. The weaker constructs shattered on impact. Pfft. Pfft. Their forms dissolved into particles of soul energy.

Two remained. Both Mid Soul Core. The spikes hit them but only cracked their forms.

They lunged.

Kael raised his Soul Shield. Vvvvm. The first wolf slammed into the barrier—CRACK—Cracks spider-webbed across its surface.

The second wolf circled behind him.

Kael pivoted. The shield cracked further—crack—then shattered. POP.

The first wolf lunged again. Kael sidestepped—whoosh—and the wolf’s jaws snapped shut on empty air.

"SOUL SEVERING BLADE."

SLASH!

The blade of concentrated soul energy swept through the first wolf. Pfft. It dissolved.

The second wolf jumped. Kael met it with a Soul Spike at point-blank range.

PZT!

Shatter.

Kael exhaled. Hhhh. His soul power had dropped since he had to constantly keep soul sense active to map this dark labyrinth.

He moved forward.

WHUM.

The labyrinth shifted again. His map reset.

Kael re-scanned. The corridor ahead had split into three paths. He scanned each. Left—trap. Right—trap. Center—continues.

He took the center path.

Another shift. Three minutes already.

Re-map.

The center path now branched left and right. He scanned. Left continued. Right was a trap.

He went left.

Three more soul beasts appeared. All Late Soul Core.

SHRIIIEEK!

They attacked simultaneously—from three directions.

Kael fired Soul Spike Barrage.

Pzt-pzt-pzt-pzt!

The spikes struck all three. One dissolved. Pfft. Two remained.

Kael raised his Soul Shield. Vvvvm. The first beast slammed into it. CRACK. The second circled wide.

The shield cracked. Kael dismissed it before it shattered and fired another Soul Spike into the first beast’s core.

PZT!

Pfft. Gone.

The third beast leapt. Kael sidestepped and slashed with Soul Severing Blade.

SLASH!

Pfft. Gone.

Hhhh.

His soul reserves were still at Mid Soul Core.

The System can’t help much here, he realized. It wasn’t designed to guide me on the soul path. Its soul resource supply is limited.

He pushed forward.

WHUM. WHUM.

Two shifts in rapid succession. His map reset twice. He re-mapped twice.

Forty minutes gone.

His soul sense caught something ahead. A large space—the center of the labyrinth. Soul power radiated from it like warmth from a fire. He was close.

But between him and the center stood something else.

A soul beast. Unlike the others.

Its body was made of dense, compressed soul energy—far more concentrated than the wolf constructs. It had an humonoid shape.

The Soul Guardian sensed him. It turned slowly. Those burning eyes locked onto his soul signature.

Early Soul Tempering Realm.

The realm above Soul Core Realm.

The guardian attacked with devastating speed.

WHOOSH!

The guardian closed the distance in an instant—a soul-powered lunge that Kael barely perceived through soul sense.

He dodged—whoosh—and the guardian’s fist passed through where his chest had been.

The guardian pivoted and raised both fists. Soul power gathered.

Kael’s eyes widened behind his blindfold of darkness.

The guardian fired.

BOOM!

Soul fists—condensed projectiles of pure soul energy—launched toward Kael.

He raised multiple Soul Shields—Vvvvm! Vvvvm! Vvvvm!

CRACK! CRACK! SHATTER!

The shields broke in sequence. The third soul fist punched through and hit Kael in the chest.

SLAM!

Kael flew backward. His back hit the labyrinth wall—CRASH—and soul pain lanced through his body. Direct soul damage from the wall AND the fist simultaneously.

Cough. Blood spattered from his lips. Splatter.

Hhhh... hhhh...

He slid to the ground. His soul core throbbed—pulse-pulse—damaged but intact.

Not only can the soul fists target the soul, but they also damage the body at the same time. What a marvelous piece of technique.

The guardian advanced slowly towards him.

Kael stood up as he wiped the blood from his lip with the back of his hand.

A smirk spread across his face.

But I also have something of my own.
