The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign
Chapter 267: The Shadows Have Deepened
Three weeks passed.
On World Thirteen, the western territories stretched across rugged terrain dotted with cities and mining outposts. Isabella Vorn’s city sat in the heart of this region—a well-organized hub of trade and logistics that she managed.
Her office occupied the top floor of a three-story administrative building. Holographic displays floated above her desk, each one tracking shipments, resource allocations, and personnel movements across her territory. Paperwork was stacked in neat piles beside her. Isabella preferred paper for sensitive documents. Digital records could be hacked. Paper couldn’t be copied without entering the room.
A knock at her door.
Knock-knock.
"Come in," Isabella said without looking up.
Her Guardian Knight stepped inside. The woman was tall, armored in dark Vorn-issue combat attire, with short black hair and sharp features. Peak Spirit Soul Rank—the same tier as Yuki.
"My Lady," the Guardian Knight said, bowing slightly. "Sebastian Vorn is here. He requests an audience."
Isabella’s pen paused mid-stroke.
Sebastian.
She sighed.
Hhhh.
"Why is he here?" Isabella murmured, more to herself than to her Knight. Her mind raced through possibilities. Sebastian had been irrelevant for years—stuck at Foundation Establishment, bitter, attached to Marcus like a parasite to a dying host.
It’s about Kael. It’s always about Kael.
"Allow him in," Isabella said.
The Guardian Knight stepped aside. Sebastian walked through the door.
He looked different. Isabella noticed immediately.
"My Lady," the Guardian Knight said, glancing at Isabella.
Isabella waved her hand. "Leave us."
The Guardian Knight bowed and exited. The door closed behind her.
Click.
Sebastian took the seat across from Isabella’s desk. He leaned back, crossing one leg over the other.
"Hello, Sis," Sebastian said.
Isabella didn’t look up from her paperwork. Her pen continued moving—scratch-scratch-scratch—across the document in front of her.
"What do you want now, Sebastian?"
Sebastian smirked. He folded his hands together.
"Brother Marcus. Sister Thalia. Even brother Felix." He paused. "They’ve all allied to kill Kael."
Isabella’s pen stopped.
She still didn’t look up.
"Sister," Sebastian continued. "Everyone is picking sides now. The Family Head watches. The Throne waits. The Swords sharpen. And the Shadows—our siblings—are dividing."
His aura exploded.
WHUUUUM!
The air in the office compressed. Isabella’s paperwork fluttered—flutter-flutter—and the holographic displays flickered. The teacup on her desk rattled against its saucer.
Clatter-clatter.
Mana Heart Rank 1.
Sebastian had broken through.
He smirked, watching Isabella’s face, waiting for the reaction. Waiting for surprise. Waiting for acknowledgment.
It didn’t come.
Isabella resumed writing. Scratch-scratch-scratch.
"You still think you can catch up to him," she said flatly. "Last time I heard, he was already at Mana Heart Rank 3."
The words landed like a slap. Sebastian’s smirk faltered. His aura retracted slightly. Isabella herself was already at Mana heart rank 4.
Sebastian’s jaw tightened. His hands clenched on his knee.
Hhhh.
"No, Sis," Sebastian said, his voice dropping. "I will devour him. I will surpass him. And when I do—"
He leaned forward.
"Now tell me, Sis. Will you side with me and help kill him in the Inheritance Ground? Or are you going to continue helping that bastard?"
Isabella set her pen down.
Click.
She looked at Sebastian with eyes that held no warmth. Just exhaustion.
"Get out, Sebastian. I have better things to do."
Sebastian stared at her.
Then he sighed.
Hhhh.
He shook his head slowly.
"What a pity," he murmured. "You bitch."
He stood.
"It seems I’ll just have to do it myself. So much for convincing you."
His hand reached into his storage ring.
Sebastian pulled out a small orb. It was black, veined with red light, the size of a marble. He held it between two fingers.
Isabella’s senses pressed against it. Her eyes widened.
"Sebastian—what are you—"
Sebastian shattered the orb.
CRACK!
The marble broke in his grip. Space itself ripped open—a jagged tear in reality that pulsed with dark energy.
Hsssss...
Two figures stepped through.
The first wore a clown mask—white face, painted red smile stretched obscenely across the cheeks, eye holes revealing nothing but darkness beneath.
The battle of Hevaria. This was one of the two men who had appeared from a portal to rescue the Asura Demon Draxos. The other had been Claude—the black-masked man.
The second figure needed no mask.
Clovis. Vice Principal of Neon Abyss Academy. He wore dark academic robes lined with crimson runes.
Clovis raised his hand.
WHUUUUM!
A cube of compressed space materialized around all four of them—Isabella, Sebastian, Clown Face, and Clovis. The cube sealed shut. The walls of the office beyond became hazy, distorted, unreachable.
Isabella pressed her rune stone.
Click-click-click-click!
Nothing.
She pressed again.
Click-click-click!
Nothing. The communication rune was dead. The space within the cube was isolated—cut off from the outside world entirely.
Isabella’s eyes widened.
What—
Clovis spoke with a calm voice.
"Hey, Clown Face. We have only ten minutes before they notice anything."
Clown Face tilted his masked head. "That’s quite plenty."
Sebastian smiled at Isabella.
"Hope you like my gift, Sis."
Isabella looked at him with pure disgust.
"What have you done?"
Clown Face walked toward Isabella.
Isabella acted immediately. Her hand shot forward and a field of intense gravity formed around her body.
WHUUUM!
The gravity field pressed outward. The floor beneath her cracked. Crack-crack. The air within the cube distorted.
Clown Face walked into it unaffected.
The gravity field bent around him.
Isabella’s blood went cold.
She attacked. Gravity Pull—yanking objects toward her with crushing force. The chair behind her launched at Clown Face.
WHOOSH!
Clown Face raised one finger. The chair dissolved into dust.
Pfft.
Isabella formed portals to escape.
ZIP!
Clovis raised his hand. The portal immediately closed back before she could enter.
Isabella’s heart hammered. Thump-thump-thump.
Clown Face stood before her. His painted smile seemed wider.
Then Isabella felt it.
Dizziness.
Swhhh...
The room tilted. Her vision blurred. Her knees buckled.
Thud.
She hit the floor. Her hands pressed against the cold stone, trying to push herself up. Her arms trembled.
What... what is this? Poison? A soul attack? I didn’t even see him—
Clown Face knelt beside her. His masked face was inches from hers. Through the eye holes, she could see nothing—just darkness. Absolute, consuming darkness.
Isabella’s vision darkened at the edges. Her consciousness frayed.
Somebody help...
Anybody...
Her hand reached for the rune stone on her desk—too far. Her fingers grasped air.
...help...
Her eyes began to close.
The last thing she saw was Sebastian’s face, looking down at her with a smile.
Clatter.
Her rune stone fell from her desk and hit the floor.
End of Arc 2: The Shadow Deepens.
AUTHOR’S NOTE:
If you’ve made it this far, thank you. Genuinely. Every comment, every review, every late-night read—you’re the reason this story continues.
Arc 2 was about expansion. Kael stepped beyond the Vorn estate, beyond the academy, and began building something of his own. Starfall City. Trevor City. Greymoor City. Three territories. A growing army. A name that carries weight now.
But power draws attention. And attention draws enemies.
Sebastian’s betrayal was always coming. Some of you saw it. Some of you didn’t. That’s the thing about a family like the Vorns—loyalty is conditional, and even the weakest will find teeth if you give them a master willing to hold the leash.
The Shadow Vatican and the House of Crimson are no longer a background threats.
Arc 3 will answer questions some of you have been asking since the beginning:
What happened to Damian Astraeon? Who created the system? What awaits inside the Inheritance Ground? And what will Kael do when the people he’s claimed are threatened?
I’ll tell you this much—Kael is going to have to evolve into a monster not of his own making.
Thank you for reading. Arc 3 begins next Chapter.
