Then, a crisp, perfectly clear, robotic voice echoed through the silence of his mind, carrying the weight of a thousand digital calculations.

"System switch on successfully."

"Welcome back, Host."

The sudden synthetic chime pulled Rohan straight out of the deepest sleep he had experienced in days. His eyelids snapped open, his pupils dilating as he sat bolt upright on his narrow hostel mattress. Floating right in front of his face, illuminating the pitch-black shadows of Room 36 in a brilliant, ethereal cyan light, was the semi-transparent holographic square he had missed so desperately.

For five full minutes, Rohan sat completely frozen like a statue.

He didn’t blink. He didn’t breathe. His heart hammered violently against his ribs like a trapped bird, casting long shadows of his trembling hands across the bedsheets as the cool blue illumination reflected in his dark eyes. The phantom sensation of the system’s neural connection re-establishing itself felt like a cool, refreshing wave of electricity surging through his spine, washing away the lingering mental fatigue of the last three days.

It’s back, he thought, his chest expanding with an overwhelming, intoxicating wave of emotion. It’s really back! The penalty is over!

An uncontrollable surge of absolute joy bubbled up from the depths of his throat. He wanted to leap out of his bed, tear off his shirt, and scream at the absolute top of his lungs until his voice went hoarse. He wanted to grab Kabir by his shoulders, shake him awake, and yell to the entire stadium that the Pace Demon’s true engine was finally online again.

But just as the yell reached his lips, his brain caught up with his excitement. He choked the scream back down, his hand slapping firmly over his own mouth. He glanced nervously up at the top bunk where Joy was snoring softly beneath his blanket, and then across the room where Aryan lay fast asleep.

He squeezed his eyes shut, taking three deep, shuddering breaths through his nose to force his racing pulse to slow down. He couldn’t afford to wake anyone up. This was his secret—his hidden edge in the brutal Crucible of the state trials.

As if sensing his host’s emotional turbulence, the mechanical voice spoke once more inside his head, smooth, emotionless, and deeply comforting:

"Welcome back, Host."

Rohan swallowed hard, wiping a drop of nervous sweat from his temple. He straightened his spine against the wooden headboard, keeping his voice down to an ultra-low whisper that barely disturbed the quiet night air.

"System... open the Status Panel."

Instantly, with a crisp digital shhh-ding, the interface expanded. The glowing translucent screen resized itself, floating comfortably three feet in front of his eyes.

Rohan leaned forward, his dark eyes scanning every single row of digits with hawk-like focus. He studied the numbers for a long moment, tapping his chin thoughtfully.

"Looking at this..." Rohan muttered softly under his breath, analyzing the data. "Only a few stats actually went up. The rest are almost identical to where they were before the system shutdown happened."

His mind immediately began dissecting the numbers like a seasoned coach.

"My Peak Pace hit 139.9 km/h during that four-wicket spell against Team 4," he noted, feeling a flicker of pride. "And my Physique has crept up to 42, probably because of the sheer physical hell I put my body through yesterday and that torturous ice bath this morning. But the rest of the stats haven’t moved at all."

He leaned back against the headboard, his eyes narrowing as he pointed out his core operational weaknesses step by step.

"If I want to survive this selection camp and conquer the top teams, I have to fix these imbalances," Rohan thought silently. "First, in Physical Attributes... my Agility is sitting at a dismal 32. That’s why my fielding feels heavy, my lateral movement in the outfield is sluggish, and my reaction time when a ball is smashed straight back at me off my own bowling is way too slow. I definitely need to raise Agility if I want to become a complete athlete."

He shifted his gaze down to the Bowling section.

"In Bowling, my raw pace is high, but my Line & Length is only at 25. Against smart, experienced state-level batsmen who don’t panic under speed, a bad delivery at 138 km/h is just an effortless boundary. I need to get my control up. And my Swing and Seam stat is at 35... which isn’t nearly high enough to move the ball on flat tracks or dead dusty pitches like the one we are playing on tomorrow."

His eyes briefly flicked down to the dismal Batting section.

"And Batting... well, everything there is practically in the gutter. Hand-Eye 30, Timing 20, Power 22. If I ever get stuck in a tail-end crisis where I need to score 15 runs off the final over to win a match, I’m going to cost my team the game if I don’t upgrade my batting eventually."

Rohan clutched his hands into tight fists, his eyes shining with pure ambition.

"But right now, bowling is my primary weapon. It’s my identity. If I want to stand out among the state’s absolute best bowlers, I have to upgrade my bowling first! I need to unlock the Inswing and Outswing Masteries! If I can swing the red leather ball both ways at express pace, no batsman in this entire tournament will be able to touch me. And above all... I need to break through the 140 km/h barrier. Once I cross 140 km/h, the state selectors won’t just notice me—they’ll be forced to pick me!"

Excitement surged through his veins. He had 28 unallocated System Points (SP) sitting right there. He reached out his hand, ready to tap on his Pace attribute and forcefully smash through the 140 km/h mark right then and there.

BZZZZT!

Suddenly, the tranquil blue interface shattered. A violent, flashing red notification box slammed over the center of the panel, casting a harsh crimson glare across Rohan’s face. A sharp, high-pitched warning tone hummed directly inside his head.

[WARNING: CRITICAL PHYSICAL LIMITATION DETECTED]

[Host desires to force bowling velocity past the 140.0 km/h threshold.]

[ALERT: Generating release velocity above 140.0 km/h transfers exponential kinetic shock through the Host’s anatomical frame. The ground-impact force on the front landing leg exceeds 8.5x body weight.]

[REQUIREMENT: To safely unlock and sustain a bowling velocity of 140.0 km/h+, the Host MUST first increase the [Physique] attribute to 75 / 200 or higher.]

[Current Physique: 42 / 200.]

[Attempting to break the 140.0 km/h speed barrier without meeting the 75+ Physique requirement will result in immediate structural failure: severe lumbar stress fractures, patellar tendon rupture, or rotator cuff tears.]

Rohan stared at the glowing crimson text, his jaw dropping so far down it nearly touched his collarbone. His eyes bulged in absolute shock and frustration.

"To bowl at 140 km/h... I have to upgrade my Physique stat to 75+ first?!" Rohan hissed out loud in disbelief, clutching his head with both hands. "WTF, System?! My Physique is only at 42 right now! 75+ is almost double what I currently have! How on earth am I supposed to reach 75 Physique anytime soon?!"

The System offered no emotional comfort. The harsh red notification faded back into the serene blue dashboard as the robotic voice delivered its cold, logical explanation:

"System protocols prioritize Host survival. The human skeleton is a lever system composed of bone and biological tissue. Releasing a leather ball at 140 kilometers per hour requires immense rotational torque and violent braking forces. Without a Physique score of 75 or higher, the Host’s spinal column cannot absorb the kinetic recoil. The 140 km/h speed barrier remains locked until physical conditioning requirements are met."

Rohan flopped backward onto his pillow, letting out a long, agonized groan as he stared up at the concrete ceiling.

"Unbelievable..." he muttered bitterly. "So the 140 km/h wall is locked behind a massive physical grind. That means I can’t just rely on brute speed to carry me through this tournament. I can’t just run in and hurl thunderbolts."

He sat back up, running his fingers through his messy hair, his tactical brain quickly adapting to the reality of the situation.

"Fine. If I can’t upgrade my raw speed past 140 km/h yet, then I have to spend these 28 SP on control, movement, and athleticism. If I can’t overpower batsmen with sheer velocity, I’ll outskill them with unplayable lines and sharp swing."

Rohan tapped the interface, opening the SP allocation screen. He spent the next twenty minutes carefully calculating every single point like a grandmaster analyzing a chessboard.

He funnelled 8 SP into Line & Length, raising it from a mediocre 25 to a much more respectable 33. Instantly, a strange clarity settled into his muscle memory—he could visually calculate the exact pitching spot on a cricket pitch down to the inch.

Next, he allocated 10 SP into Swing / Seam, elevating it from 35 to 45. A cascade of technical knowledge regarding wrist angles, seam positioning, and atmospheric friction flooded his mind, bringing him significantly closer to unlocking the advanced Inswing and Outswing skill trees.

He then put 6 SP into Agility, bumping it up from 32 to 38 to ensure his fielding and run-up deceleration felt lighter and more athletic.

Finally, knowing he needed to start climbing the long, arduous mountain toward the 140 km/h requirement, he put his final 4 SP into Physique, raising it from 42 to 46.

The blue panel flashed softly as the allocations finalized:

[SP ALLOCATION SUCCESSFUL]

• Physique: 42 ➔ 46 / 200

• Agility: 32 ➔ 38 / 200

• Line & Length: 25 ➔ 33 / 200

• Swing / Seam: 35 ➔ 45 / 200

• Remaining SP: 0

A subtle, warm sensation trickled through his shoulder muscles and lower legs as the physical updates took effect. Rohan closed the System interface, leaning his head back against his pillow. Though he hadn’t broken the 140 km/h barrier, he felt far more refined, far more dangerous, and entirely complete.

He pulled his blanket over his shoulders, closing his eyes. Tomorrow was the battle against Team 9 on the dry, dusty pitch. And now, he was fully equipped to face it.

The Next Day: July 18th

6:00 AM - Varun Jaitley Stadium Practice Nets

The early morning air over Delhi was crisp and slightly chilly, carrying the fresh scent of dew-soaked grass and cut turf. The sky above the grand stadium was painted in pale orange and pink hues as the sun slowly began its ascent over the concrete stands.

While the majority of the players in the residential blocks were still fast asleep in their air-conditioned dorms, the outdoor practice nets were already humming with activity.

THWACK!

The sharp, echoing sound of a leather ball cracking off the sweet spot of an expensive willow bat shattered the morning silence.

In Net Number 2, Rohan stood at the top of his bowling mark. He was wearing a sweat-stained white training shirt and track pants. His eyes were locked onto Aryan, who was padded up in the batting crease, adjusting his stance.

Rohan took a long, steady breath, feeling the newly upgraded Agility flowing through his limbs. His run-up felt effortlessly light, his footfalls perfectly measured as he glided down the turf.

He reached the crease, gathered his momentum, and snapped his wrist with lethal precision.

The ball tore down the pitch at a blistering 135 km/h. Thanks to his upgraded Line & Length, it hit the seam on a perfectly agonizing 4th-stump trajectory, nipping inward just enough to challenge the batsman.

Aryan, displaying his elite technique, leaned forward into a flawless, textbook defensive stroke, smothering the ball right at his feet.

Rohan walked down the pitch, collecting the red cherry as it rolled back to him.

Aryan lifted his helmet visor, wiping a thin bead of perspiration from his forehead. He looked at Rohan with a mixture of genuine surprise and deep respect.

"I can see it, Rohan," Aryan told him, his voice filled with sincere appreciation. "Your skill is improving noticeably with every passing day. Your wrist position at the point of release is so much cleaner today, and your line isn’t straying even by an inch."

Rohan smiled slightly, tossing the red leather ball lightly from his right hand to his left. "Thanks. But you’re not far behind either, Captain. That defense was rock solid."

Aryan chuckled softly, but as he lowered his visor back down over his face, his expression turned serious and contemplative. He turned his head, looking across the vast stadium outfield toward Pitch Number 4—the dry, pale-yellow strip of soil where the groundstaff were currently sweeping away loose dust.

"Appreciate it," Aryan said, tapping the toe of his bat against the crease. "But Rohan... today’s match is going to be much harder than the first one. Team 9 isn’t like Team 4. They won’t panic under pressure, and they won’t give away easy wickets."

Aryan leaned against his bat, his tone heavy with tactical awareness. "Their bowling attack is the best in this entire camp. Their spinners can turn the ball on concrete, let alone a dusty track like Pitch 4. If we want to survive today and chase down whatever target they set, every single one of us has to play at our absolute best."

Rohan’s grip on the leather ball tightened, his dark eyes reflecting the rising morning sun.

"Don’t worry, Captain," Rohan said, his voice cold, focused, and steady. "We have a plan. Let’s go show Team 9 what we’re made of."
