The Cricket System : Rise of the Pace Demon

Chapter 43: The Vow and the Gauntlet

Ananya gently touched the photograph, tracing the line of his smile with her fingertip. The vow she had made in that sterile hospital room seven years ago burned just as fiercely in her chest today.

Rohan, she thought, her eyes glinting with unwavering, absolute devotion. You are my love. You are my dream. You are my goal.

With a deep, steadying breath, she stepped away from her desk. She quickly took a bath, dressed in her crisp, perfectly ironed school uniform, and headed downstairs. After finishing a light breakfast under her mother’s watchful eye, Ananya grabbed her bag and stepped out into the bustling, sunlit streets of Delhi.

As she walked toward the school gates, her usually sharp, analytical mind completely betrayed her. Instead of reviewing chemical equations or tactical formations for the upcoming exams, her thoughts kept drifting back to yesterday.

She remembered the adrenaline, the danger, and then... the quiet moment afterward. The way he had looked at her, the sudden, overwhelming confession, and the warmth of their first kiss. A deep, furious blush spread across her cheeks, entirely uncharacteristic of the school’s top scorer. She pulled her scarf up slightly to hide her smiling face. He actually proposed, she thought, her heart doing a frantic, illogical flutter. After seven years, that idiot finally figured it out.

The moment she stepped through the school gates, her romantic daydreaming vanished, instantly replaced by her tactical focus. She needed to see him.

Ananya systematically searched the entire campus. She checked the second-row desks in their classroom. Empty. She checked the canteen, his usual spot near the samosa vendor. Empty. She even checked the dusty municipal ground behind the science block where he sometimes practiced his grip. Nothing.

Frowning in mild frustration, she finally spotted a familiar head of hair. Kabir was lounging near the water cooler, aggressively chewing on a piece of bubblegum and scrolling through his phone.

Ananya marched right up to him. "Kabir. Where is Rohan?"

Kabir didn’t even look up from his screen. "I don’t know."

Ananya crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. "Do not joke with me today, Kabir. I am not in the mood. Where exactly is he?"

Kabir finally paused, looking up with a mischievous glint in his eye. He rubbed his chin theatrically. "Hmm... okay, okay. Let me think a little bit. You know, my brain requires fuel to process memories. Maybe if you buy me a paneer roll from the canteen, the information will magically come to me—"

THWACK.

Ananya’s fist came down hard, landing squarely on the top of Kabir’s head with terrifying precision.

"OW!" Kabir shrieked, dropping his phone and grabbing his hair. "What was that for?!"

Ananya leaned in close, adjusting her glasses. She gave him a glare so utterly deadly it could have frozen the water in the cooler behind him. "Was that tasty?" she asked, her voice dangerously sweet. "Or would you like another serving to help your brain process the information?"

Kabir took a massive step back, instinctively raising his hands in defense. "Okay! Okay! I was just joking! God, you are terrifying! I think he went to the state academy. He said something about starting his Under-19 training early today!"

Ananya let out a soft sigh, her deadly aura instantly dissipating. So he’s already at the nets, she thought to herself, a slight pout forming on her lips. Sadly, I’ll just have to wait until after school to go meet him.

She looked back at Kabir, who was still aggressively rubbing his head. "Wait. You were selected for the Under-19 Delhi State Reserves too, weren’t you? Why aren’t you at training with him?"

"Because I am a civilized human being who values his sleep," Kabir grumbled, picking up his phone. "I told the coach I’ll start my training sessions in the evening, after school. Rohan is just a maniac. Who goes to bowl fast at six in the morning?"

Ananya smiled softly to herself. My maniac, she thought.

Scene Shift: Iron Core

While Ananya was navigating the school corridors, the atmosphere inside the Iron Core Gym was unusually quiet.

The heavy metal plates weren’t clanking, and the treadmill motors were silent. In the small, air-conditioned office at the back of the facility, three figures sat around a low wooden coffee table.

Monu Bhaiya and Vikram sat on the heavy leather sofa, both holding steaming paper cups of cutting chai. Across from them, Rohan sat in a folding chair, dressed in his workout gear, looking entirely confused by the sudden sit-down meeting.

Monu Bhaiya took a slow sip of his tea. He lowered the cup, placing it carefully on the table. His usually jovial, easygoing face was set in a deadly serious expression. He looked straight into Rohan’s eyes.

"Rohan," Monu Bhaiya began, his voice low and heavy. "What do you think of us two?"

Rohan blinked, completely taken aback by the question. He looked at Monu, then at Vikram’s stoic, muscular frame. "What?"

"You heard me," Monu repeated steadily. "What do you think of us? What are we to you?"

The room fell silent. Rohan looked down at his hands, the calluses from years of gripping the leather ball rough against his palms. He thought about the endless hours Monu had spent fixing his run-up. He thought about Vikram giving him free access to this gym, pushing his physical limits, and treating his injuries without ever asking for a single rupee.

Rohan let out a long, slow breath. The chaotic, joking demeanor of the ’Pace Demon’ melted away, leaving only profound, genuine respect.

"Big brothers," Rohan replied softly, looking up to meet their gaze. "I know we aren’t blood-related. We don’t share the same last name. But... I consider you both my elder brothers. You are the ones who are always ready to help me, no matter what time it is, no matter how much trouble I’m in. You’re family."

A heavy, emotional silence hung in the air for a few seconds.

Vikram, a man of very few words, slowly leaned forward, resting his massive forearms on his knees. The corners of his mouth twitched upward into a rare, fierce smile.

"Then it’s settled," Vikram declared, his voice rumbling like a heavy diesel engine. "From today, we are taking the training wheels off. We are going to fully support you. We won’t just train you to be a good bowler, Rohan. We are going to forge you into a proper, unstoppable professional cricketer. Whatever it takes."

Rohan’s chest swelled with immense pride and gratitude. Having the absolute backing of these two veterans made him feel invincible. He looked at them and smiled brightly, ready to take on the world.

Seven Hours Later

The heavy glass door of the Iron Core Gym was violently shoved open.

Rohan stumbled out onto the pavement. His bright smile from the office was completely, unequivocally gone.

His face was flushed crimson, drenched in a horrifying amount of sweat. His legs were shaking so violently it looked as though he was dancing to an invisible beat, and his arms hung limply at his sides like overcooked noodles. He looked like he had just survived a war zone.

"Monsters..." Rohan wheezed furiously, glaring back through the glass at Vikram and Monu, who were high-fiving each other near the squat racks. "Psychopaths! I take it back! You aren’t my brothers! You’re demons!"

The "full support" they had promised meant Sevenuninterrupted hours of the most grueling, soul-crushing plyometric and strength-conditioning circuit he had ever experienced in his entire fifteen years of life.
