The Cricket System : Rise of the Pace Demon
Chapter 31: The Short-Circuit
The damp, heavy air of the Iron Core Fitness basement hung between the three of them. The sheer impossibility of a four-foot vertical box jump by a fifteen-year-old was still settling into Vikram and Monu’s minds.
Monu Bhaiya finally broke the silence, his voice low and incredibly serious.
"Listen to me, Rohan," Monu said, tossing his unlit beedi onto the rubber mat. "The BCCD camp isn’t just about who can bowl the fastest. It is psychological warfare. Those older guys will mock your age, they will crowd your run-up, and they will try to break your spirit before you even bowl a single delivery."
Vikram crossed his massive arms, nodding in agreement. "Power is useless if your mind shatters under pressure, and it’s dangerous if your body can’t handle the recoil. For the next two weeks, we are locking the doors. We are going to train you physically until your joints are bulletproof, and mentally until you are completely untouchable."
Vikram pointed a thick finger at Rohan. "Tomorrow night. 9 PM sharp. Come straight here after dinner. We are going to build a monster."
"I’ll be here," Rohan said, picking up his wet kit bag. He offered a small, respectful nod to both men before heading up the concrete stairs.
As Rohan pushed the heavy glass doors open, the Delhi night greeted him. The torrential monsoon downpour had finally reduced to a gentle, cool drizzle. The streets were slick, reflecting the neon signs of the closed shops.
He had barely walked ten steps when his phone buzzed in his pocket.
He pulled it out, shielding the screen from the light rain. It was Ananya.
"Hello?" Rohan answered, a natural smile touching his lips.
"Where are you?" Ananya’s voice crackled through the speaker, carrying over the distant sound of traffic.
"Just outside the gym," Rohan replied, adjusting his bag on his shoulder. "Heading home now."
"Perfect," Ananya said, sounding pleased. "I’m actually just a block away. Wait right there, let’s walk back together."
"Okay. See you in a minute."
Rohan slipped the phone back into his pocket. A few minutes later, he began walking slowly down the main road to meet her halfway. The streetlights flickered, casting long shadows over the puddles.
As he turned the corner near the local market, he spotted her.
Ananya was standing under the bright, harsh halogen bulb of a street vendor’s cart. The unmistakable, mouth-watering aroma of tangy tamarind water, roasted cumin, and mashed potatoes filled the air. It was a local Pani Puri stall.
Ananya was already holding a small leaf bowl, expertly popping a crisp, water-filled puri into her mouth as the vendor quickly prepared the next one.
Rohan walked up to her, raising an eyebrow. "What are you doing? It’s 8:30 PM. Isn’t your mom going to scold you for ruining your dinner?"
Ananya swallowed and turned to him, her hazel eyes bright. "I’m celebrating your Under-19 call-up, obviously. Come on, Roy. Eat."
She gestured to the vendor, who immediately held out a fresh leaf bowl toward Rohan.
Rohan hesitated. He looked at the spicy, dark green mint water and the red tamarind chutney. Just an hour ago, he was thinking about his newly upgraded 36 Physique and the sheer amount of discipline professional athletes maintained. State-level players didn’t eat street food; the acid, the spices, and the unfiltered water were a recipe for losing peak physical conditioning or catching an infection right before trials.
I shouldn’t, Rohan thought, stepping back slightly. Not with the trials just fourteen days away.
Suddenly, a blue holographic interface flickered to life right over the vendor’s cart.
[System Notification: Dietary Scan Initiated.]
Host Physique Status: 36/200 (Amateur Upper Echelon).
Passive Ability Active: Hyper-Metabolic Tissue Repair.
Analysis: Host’s immune system and digestive tract operate at 400% baseline human efficiency. Extreme acidic, spicy, or unhygienic compounds will be instantaneously neutralized and converted into base caloric energy.
Recommendation: Consume without hesitation. Enjoy your meal, Host.
Rohan blinked. A slow, genuine grin spread across his face.
I love this System, he thought.
"Alright," Rohan said, grabbing the leaf bowl from the vendor. "Bhaiya, make it spicy."
For the next twenty minutes, the two of them stood under the halogen light, entering into an unspoken, aggressive eating contest. They devoured plate after plate of spicy, tangy Pani Puri, their eyes watering from the chili, laughing every time one of them nearly choked on the fiery water.
By the time they finally paid the vendor and started walking toward their neighborhood, both of them were completely stuffed, carrying two bottles of cold water to soothe their burning throats.
The rain had stopped entirely, leaving a cool, refreshing breeze in its wake. The streets were quiet, a rare moment of peace in the usually chaotic city.
"So," Ananya said, kicking a small pebble along the wet road. "Under-19 State Trials. That’s huge, Rohan. You’re going to be facing guys who have actual beards and drive their own cars."
"Monu Bhaiya basically told me the same thing," Rohan chuckled, though his eyes remained focused on the road ahead. "He called it a meat grinder. But I’m ready for it. I have a plan."
He looked at Ananya walking beside him. The yellow streetlights caught the edges of her face. He suddenly realized how much of his recent success was tied directly to her. She was the one who had reverse-engineered Zoravar’s batting stance using physics. She was the one who had provided the flawless scouting report on Prithvi Varma.
While the System gave him the weapons, Ananya had given him the tactical map to use them.
The pacing of their walk naturally slowed down as they entered their quiet residential lane.
Rohan cleared his throat. The fearless ’Pace Demon’ who stared down state-level captains without blinking suddenly felt his heart rate spike in a way the System couldn’t control.
"You know, Ananya," Rohan started, his voice a little uncharacteristically rough. "When I clear these trials... things are going to get serious. I’ll be playing in different states. Facing professional analysts. The math and physics of the game are going to get a lot more complicated."
"I know," Ananya said softly, looking up at him. "But you’re smart. You’ll figure it out."
"I don’t want to figure it out alone," Rohan blurted out, stopping in the middle of the street.
Ananya stopped too, turning to face him.
Rohan rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a sudden, intense wave of nervousness. He looked down at his feet, then back up into her hazel eyes.
"What I mean is," Rohan said, taking a subtle step closer, offering a very indirect, heavily veiled proposal. "I need my lead tactician with me. Permanently. Not just as a friend helping me study... but as my partner. For all of it."
The silence that followed was deafening. The only sound was the distant dripping of rainwater from a balcony overhead.
Ananya’s expression shifted. The soft, encouraging look vanished. Her eyebrows drew together tightly, her jaw clenching. She looked at him with an intensely fierce, almost deeply angry glare.
Rohan’s stomach dropped. The System’s Giant Slayer’s Aura was completely useless here. He had misread the situation. He had crossed the line and ruined the best friendship he had.
Panic seized him.
"Hey, uh—" Rohan stammered, frantically waving his hands, physically taking a step back. "I was just joking! Seriously, Ananya, it was just a stupid joke. Forget I said anything. Don’t look at me like that, please."
Ananya didn’t say a word. Her glare didn’t soften. Instead, she took a slow, deliberate step toward him.
Rohan swallowed hard, his back hitting the damp brick wall of the corner house. He literally couldn’t retreat any further.
She took another step, closing the distance completely. She was looking at him with such intense, fierce energy that Rohan genuinely thought she was about to slap him across the face for disrespecting their friendship.
Terrified of the incoming strike, the 130 km/h fast bowler squeezed his eyes tightly shut, bracing for impact.
He waited for the sting of her hand.
Instead, he felt a sudden, soft warmth press against his lips.
Rohan’s eyes snapped open in absolute shock.
Ananya was standing on her tiptoes, her hands gripping the front of his wet jacket. The ’angry’ glare was gone, replaced by tightly shut eyes and a beautiful, desperate intensity. The kiss was brief, clumsy, and tasted faintly of spicy tamarind water and rain.
Before Rohan’s brain could even process what was happening, Ananya pulled away.
Her face was flushed a brilliant, burning crimson. She didn’t say a single word. She just spun around on her heels and sprinted down the lane toward her house as fast as she could, her footsteps echoing loudly in the quiet street.
Rohan was left standing completely alone, pinned against the brick wall.
His 36 Physique felt entirely useless. His System v2.0 didn’t offer a single notification or tactical analysis. The feared ’Pace Demon’ of the Delhi school circuit stood frozen in the damp night air, his brain completely and utterly short-circuited.
