The Cornflower Witch

Book 3: Chapter 264: Amelie’s Little Room

  • Next Chapter

In this sealed-off library, Sylutia helped Amelie properly organize her living space. First, she taught Amelie how to tie her own hair, and then worked on developing the good habit of covering herself with something when sleeping.

"The floor isn't a place to sleep, Amelie." Sylutia instructed.

"But the floor is everywhere, it's fairly clean, and it's nice and flat. No worries about rolling off a bed. Why can't I sleep on it?" Amelie didn't understand.

"Well, that's because floors outside are generally dirty. Many people walk over them, and since the floor is at the very bottom, it's the easiest place for dust, fragments, trash, and such to pile up. There might even be rats and bugs crawling across it. If you sleep on the ground, bugs might bite you."

"Bugs..." Amelie recalled descriptions from various books and finally began to feel a bit worried.

"Alright, I won't sleep on dirty floors anymore." But the library floor, she genuinely liked it. Even with Sylutia saying all that, she still wanted to keep this little preference.

"Fine, only the clean floors in the library and at home are acceptable. Don't try it anywhere else." Sylutia wasn't the type to be overbearing or unreasonable. She patted Amelie's hair.

"Do you have a dedicated bedroom? Where do you usually bathe, change clothes, and eat?" Sylutia was curious.

"I do, but I don't like staying in there all the time." Amelie led the young woman to one side of the library. She opened a door there, revealing a cozy little room inside. It contained wooden furniture with soft, rounded edges, a flax carpet, and a curved wall on one side with many windows. The overall shape of the room was roughly crescent-like, hugging the outer wall of the tower's library.

It was as if a space had been specially carved out of the library to build this hidden, quiet little home for her. It looked rather warm and inviting.

"Usually, I just open this cabinet, and prepared food appears inside." Amelie walked over to the dining table, where there stood a wooden cabinet with two doors fitted with glass. When Sylutia opened it, she saw a prepared lunch inside, along with an apple and a jug of water.

"After finishing, just put the plates and the jug back." Amelie explained.

"How convenient." The young woman marveled. This cabinet was probably some kind of spatial teleportation device, the type directly connected to a kitchen. But activating this kind of device daily would consume one to two Third Tier gemstones each day, which could only be described as extraordinarily extravagant.

Next was the place where Amelie bathed and changed. The bathroom contained a small bath shaped like a white block, deeper on one side and shallower on the other, roughly four square meters. It could easily release hot water. Beside it stood three adorable mechanical puppets that could clean the bathroom and the room once activated, so Amelie didn't need to worry about any of that.

After touring all of this, Sylutia came to the bedroom where Amelie slept. On one side were drawn curtains, and behind them, a long arched glass window. On the other side was a wooden wardrobe, filled with clothes of many different styles hanging and arranged inside. It seemed the Sages had indeed prepared elaborate and beautiful outfits for Amelie, but she simply preferred wearing only the simplest white dress.

"Is Hedra going to stay here too from now on?" Amelie asked.

"Well..." Sylutia didn't know how to answer for a moment, but she could also see the hope in Amelie's eyes that she would stay with her.

"I probably can't stay long-term, but I can come by occasionally to keep Amelie company." It wasn't the answer that made Amelie happiest, but she still broke into a smile.

So easily satisfied, this child. Sylutia thought to herself.

"Is Amelie still sleepy? How about sleeping in bed now?" Sylutia knew Amelie hadn't gotten enough rest.

"Mm, I'm not sleepy." The young girl gently shook her head.

"Because Hedra is here." She added slowly after a pause.

Holding Amelie's hand, Sylutia came to sit in the large living room. With the curtains open, they could enjoy the sky's scenery. The two leaned together on the sofa, watching the view outside the window. Then Sylutia told Amelie about what had been happening in the outer world recently, as well as her experiences on the Wind Chime Grass Plains. There were stories about the "Pine Branch Knight," and also the visit to Duran Manor.

"Last time I came, you brought this pot of wind chime flower to show me." Sylutia thought of something and spoke up.

"Right." Amelie's voice carried a faint note of sweetness and anticipation.

Just like that, spending half a day together with Amelie, Sylutia finally waved goodbye. Before leaving, she made sure Amelie stayed in bed and slept properly.

After that, Sylutia spent a few days at Tetis College. First, she cleaned up the White Rose Palace, which had been unoccupied for a long time. Then she went to see her classmates. Everyone was currently in the "internship" phase, and only a few happened to be at the college, so they could gather.

Some had gone to remote regions to oversee local construction. Others had entered the Alliance's real power structures and begun handling complex work. Still others had gone to renowned workshops to learn and study cutting-edge craftsmanship, and so on.

"Although the workload is heavy, the Professor still advises us to participate in at least one Shadow World expedition every year, to train our combat abilities and prevent our skills from rusting."

The Mage Alliance was now extraordinarily powerful, which also meant there were no enemies or opponents to practice against. Especially since the conquest war in the western region ended years ago, there had been no large-scale wars on the surface. Only sporadic tasks remained, like hunting down criminals and combating Black Mages.

Sylutia recalled that the last time she went to the Shadow World was before the Storm arrived. Shortly after returning, she boarded the train heading north to Candela, and then went to Mishil District. She simply didn't have time for adventure and exploration anymore.

Among her close friends, Lovier basically never went to the Shadow World. Aurora would occasionally participate, testing her newly crafted puppets and checking their combat power. Only Carmilla frequently ventured into the Shadow World. This Blood Clan princess quite enjoyed the environment there, especially when adventuring solo. She could set aside all restraints, use Blood Clan secret arts, slaughter monsters in battle, and use their blood to refine gemstones or enhance one of her Bloodline abilities.

For the Blood Clan, battle was almost an instinct carved into their bloodline. In past eras, the Blood Court had continuously iterated and grown stronger through war. But after unifying the continents, the mechanism of war as a filter and eliminator was lost. This led to rigid class stratification within the dynasty, constant accumulation of internal contradictions, and ultimately mutual attrition, ending in collapse during the civil war.

She would go to the Shadow World again when she had free time. Recently, she had far too much on her plate. Before long, she would go with Amelie to study under the Named One, His Majesty. Then she needed to worry about matters in Mishil District, fretting over local industry and food production. Finally, she had to go to the "Origin Hourglass" and gradually study the profound and extensive heritage there.

Sylutia counted on her fingers, listing all the things she needed to do. Though she was indeed a bit busy, it felt exceptionally fulfilling too. Everything was proceeding in an orderly fashion.
