The Chronicle of the Last Bloom

8.8 -- The One Who Breaks the Spell

It was Vaelira who moved first, and she moved the way she always moved when she'd decided a moment had gone on exactly as long as it needed to and not one second longer: suddenly, entirely, without warning.

She surged upward and forward in a single fluid motion, closing what little distance had settled between them, and before Ilyrisse could fully register the shift in weight, Vaelira had turned them both -- rolling, quick and sure, so that it was Ilyrisse who found herself on her back against the crystal floor's soft warmth, and Vaelira who now knelt astride her, gold eyes bright, the flashback of memory and grief shattered clean in two by the sheer physical suddenness of it.

"Enough of that," Vaelira said, though her voice, for all its usual imperiousness, had gone gentler than she likely intended. "We are not going to lie here mourning men who never showed up, for one more second."

But before she said it, in the half-breath between the roll and the words, she had seen something -- something even Ilyrisse herself hadn't noticed was visible on her own face. Fear. Not composure cracking under grief, which Vaelira had seen a hundred times and knew how to sit beside patiently. This was something else: a flicker of something closer to panic, quick and small and gone almost as fast as it appeared, the look of a woman who had just said a truth so large it frightened her to have it loose in the world.

Vaelira knew, with the particular certainty of someone who has spent centuries learning to read the smallest tells in the stillest faces, exactly what that look needed. Not questions. Not more careful unpacking of old grief. It needed to be interrupted, physically, decisively, before it could take root and calcify into something Ilyrisse would spend the next century pretending she'd never felt at all.

So she gave Ilyrisse a single sharp swat in return -- retaliation for the one from earlier, delivered now with Ilyrisse pinned beneath her and utterly unable to pretend she hadn't earned it -- and then, before either of them could dwell on the moment a second longer, she settled her full weight down and wrapped her arms around her fully, pulling her into an embrace with none of the earlier teasing left in it. Just weight. Just presence. Just the simple, unglamorous fact of one body choosing to stay pressed against another.

"Even the strongest souls in this entire world need someone to hold onto," Vaelira murmured against her hair. "You've spent centuries being that person for everyone else. Let someone be it for you tonight."

Ilyrisse didn't answer. She simply exhaled -- long, slow, something in her shoulders finally unlocking after holding a shape for far longer than she'd realized -- and let herself be held.

It occurred to both of them, though neither said it aloud, that this was in some sense the entire quiet architecture of Eremos's strange, sprawling family: that every soul bound to him was, in some way, bound to each of the others too, whether they had ever spoken more than a handful of words to one another or not. When he could not be everywhere -- and he could not, no matter how much he wished otherwise -- the rest of them became each other's shelter instead. Not out of obligation. Out of the simple, accumulated fact of having all, in their own separate ways, chosen the same impossible man to build a life around.
