Sheldon Caldwell looked from Vera Xavier to Susan Caldwell. He raised an eyebrow slightly and said in a deep voice, "The captain will be chosen from one of you. I have high hopes for both of you. Begin!"

The moment Susan Caldwell faced Vera Xavier, she felt a chill run down her spine. Given her personality, if she were up against any other girl from the school she couldn’t beat, she would simply accept it. She would likely even offer a warm smile, concede defeat, and then find a way to win that person over.

But there was no way she would ever admit defeat to Vera Xavier!

Susan Caldwell’s eyes narrowed slightly. She hated Vera Xavier to the bone, and she knew Vera despised her just as much. ’If Vera actually becomes captain,’ she thought, ’she’ll definitely find every possible way to make my life hell!’

That would mean she had been well and truly crushed under Vera Xavier’s heel, and she would absolutely not allow that to happen!

She already knew Vera Xavier was highly skilled, but she had never actually seen her in a real fight. The only time she had come close was when Vera replaced Aaron Cheney as a hostage. But back then, Vera had only lured the drug lord out a single step before Nathaniel Nathan shot him in the head.

Leo Wright had told Susan Caldwell that Vera Xavier was no pushover, but she had never faced her personally. ’Now that we’re matched up and there’s no escape,’ she thought, ’I have to find a way to win!’

The usual gentleness in Susan Caldwell’s eyes vanished. She lunged straight at Vera Xavier.

Vera Xavier’s eyes narrowed as she watched Susan lunge at her. She had been frustrated about not finding a chance to deal with Susan Caldwell. ’This is a school, after all. Openly beating her up would be terrible for my image, and I could even face severe punishment if it went badly.’

Sheldon Caldwell’s little contest was an answer to her prayers. ’If I miss an opportunity this perfect,’ she thought, ’then I’m not Vera Xavier!’

And so, as Susan Caldwell lunged, Vera deliberately chose not to end it quickly. She could have finished the fight with a clean shoulder throw, just like she had with Shirley Ewing. Instead, she sidestepped Susan’s attack, balled her right hand into a fist, and drove it straight into Susan’s abdomen.

Pain brought tears to Susan Caldwell’s eyes. Filled with raw hatred, she swung a low kick at Vera Xavier. Vera dodged to the side. A vicious glint flashed in Susan’s eyes as she suddenly thrust her right hand forward, her fingers stiffened like a blade, aiming to gouge out Vera’s eyes.

Vera Xavier was filled with contempt for this string of vicious, underhanded moves. Susan Caldwell’s hand was just about to reach its target. If those fingers made contact, Vera’s eyes would be severely injured, if not completely blinded.

Susan Caldwell’s eyes filled with glee. ’Just a little further,’ she thought, ’and I can completely destroy her!’

She was bursting with excitement!

But when her fingers were barely an inch from Vera Xavier’s eye, Vera’s hand shot out and caught her wrist. With a sharp twist, Vera bent her arm back, making her scream in pain. "Let go!"

Vera had a rare opportunity to teach her a lesson. ’Why would I let go now?’

Then Vera raised her free hand and delivered a rapid series of slaps—SLAP! SLAP! SLAP!—more than a dozen of them across Susan Caldwell’s face. In an instant, her face was swollen like a pig’s head. The other students were completely stunned!

The moment Susan Caldwell had gone for Vera Xavier’s eyes, Sheldon Caldwell had shouted, "Stop!"
