Chapter 657: Chapter 657: Something Wrong in the Head (5)

At this point, the only person Vera Xavier could ask for news about Winter Sullivan was Sheldon Caldwell. And Sheldon was likely by Winter’s side, not at the university. She knew she’d have to wait until she found him tomorrow to get an update.

Vera Xavier sighed to herself. Lying in bed, she couldn’t fall asleep.

She’d only met Winter Sullivan twice, but she realized she genuinely enjoyed her company. It was completely different from how it had been with Rona Langdon.

Perhaps it was a natural mother-daughter connection, or maybe it was just that Rona Langdon and Winter Sullivan projected entirely different feelings toward her.

Vera Xavier just wished for morning to come sooner so she could see Sheldon Caldwell.

However, to Vera Xavier’s disappointment, Sheldon Caldwell didn’t come to the university the next day. Though he was the chief instructor, he only needed to set the general direction. The military training itself would be carried out by the instructors under him, so he didn’t need to be there constantly.

Vera Xavier was getting anxious. After the day’s military training ended, she went to a campus payphone and dialed the Caldwell family’s number. The phone rang for quite a while before a woman answered. It wasn’t Winter Sullivan’s voice; it was probably their housekeeper.

Vera asked the housekeeper about Winter Sullivan’s condition, but the woman claimed to know nothing. It wasn’t that the housekeeper was truly unaware; rather, Vera was a stranger to her, and she couldn’t divulge any information about Winter to an unknown caller.

Vera Xavier then tried calling Winter Sullivan’s research institute, but no one answered. She heaved a long sigh.

She knew she probably wouldn’t get any news about Winter today. ’But since I’m already at the phone booth,’ she thought, ’I might as well call Grandma.’

The call connected almost immediately. It sounded a bit noisy on the other end, and her grandmother was overjoyed to hear Vera’s voice.

Her grandmother was getting old and her hearing wasn’t great, so her voice boomed over the phone. "Vera, are you settling in okay at school? I hear it starts getting a little cold in Veridia in September, so remember to wear enough layers. And don’t skimp on your meals; eat whatever you want! Don’t be too frugal with your money!"

Vera’s heart warmed at her grandmother’s words, and she then asked about Zachary Preston’s condition.

Her grandmother said cheerfully, "Zachary is recovering wonderfully! He can already walk without any help, and he’s very steady on his feet. When your grandpa and I took him to the hospital for a follow-up yesterday, the doctor kept saying it was a miracle!"

Vera Xavier never doubted the effectiveness of the pills she’d created, but she was still happy to hear the news. ’In a few more months,’ she believed, ’he should be completely back to normal.’

She said with a smile, "It’s wonderful that Dad is recovering so well. But you and Grandpa shouldn’t wear yourselves out. Make sure you get plenty of rest, too."

Her grandmother laughed. "Your grandpa and I are doing just fine. You just focus on your studies and don’t worry about us. Oh, by the way, because Zachary’s health has improved so much, people have been coming to the house every day trying to buy the medicine. I’ve been sending them to the factory just like you said, but they still keep showing up here."

Vera wasn’t surprised. She knew perfectly well how effective her medicine was, so she was sure it would sell exceptionally well.

After hanging up with her grandmother, she made two more calls, one to Jack Judd and one to Yorke Young, to check on the pharmaceutical factory’s progress. After all, she was the real boss and couldn’t just remain completely hands-off.
