The Cannon-Fodder Mother of the '60s
Chapter 38 - 14: "It’s Her! It’s Her!
Chapter 38: Chapter 14: "It’s Her! It’s Her!
"My mom isn’t lazy at all!" Da Zai said angrily, his voice twice as loud.
Er Zai glared at her furiously.
Lin Zhao smiled faintly. "What can I do? I just happened to marry a man who’s a good earner."
Changsheng’s mother was speechless. ’What a shameless woman.’
Seeing that his mother wasn’t angry, Er Zai’s eyes darted around shrewdly. He declared loudly, "That’s right! My dad makes good money and can provide for us, so my mom doesn’t need to earn work points. If you’re not lazy, Auntie, then you should earn more work points."
Da Zai chimed in to back him up. "My mom has my dad, so she doesn’t have to work. When Er Zai and I grow up, we’ll give all the money we earn to our mom, and she still won’t have to work."
Lin Zhao hadn’t expected her boys to be thinking about earning money for their mom at such a young age. Her heart melted, and she looked at them with a touched expression.
Changsheng’s mother was furious. ’Lin Zhao and those little brats she spawned are nothing but trouble. Every one of them is more sharp-tongued than the last.’
She sneered and blurted out, "Gu Laosan might be making money now, but who knows what will happen in the future..."
Lin Zhao took two steps forward, a chill rising in her eyes. She stared at the woman intently. "And what about the future?"
Her jawline was taut and her expression was frigid. No one in the crowd dared to make a sound.
Changsheng’s mother, unafraid of the consequences, retorted, "Do I even need to spell it out? Everyone knows being a soldier is glorious, but they also live with one foot in the grave. Who knows, one day he might just..."
Before she could finish, Lin Zhao slapped her across the face and, in the same motion, kicked her into the river.
"AH—!" Caught off guard, Changsheng’s mother landed hard on her rear and was instantly soaked. Her thin summer clothes clung to her, revealing the lines of her entire body. It was a mortifying sight.
She scrambled ashore like a madwoman and lunged at Lin Zhao.
"Lin Zhao, I’ll kill you!"
Lin Zhao met her with another flying kick.
Changsheng’s mother tumbled back into the river, landing even farther away than before.
If the first time she fell in was a sneak attack, getting kicked in a second time just meant she was too weak.
The woman’s face, swollen from the slap, was an ugly mess of blue and purple.
"The nation was founded only a few years ago, and you’ve already forgotten who brought you these good times? People like you... deserve a beating." A fire raged in Lin Zhao’s chest, and her voice was laced with cold fury.
Da Zai and Er Zai didn’t understand the curse Changsheng’s mother had uttered, but the two little boys were their mother’s most loyal followers. Seeing her in a fight, they picked up stones and started throwing them at the woman in the river.
And every throw hit its mark.
Third Child and Fourth Child wanted to copy them, letting out angry hisses. They looked adorably fierce. Afraid the twins might fall into the river, Lin Zhao quickly grabbed hold of them.
Down in the river, Changsheng’s mother was nearly hit by the stones. She wrapped her arms around herself to dodge, shrieking, "OW! You damn little brats! Just you wait! When I get back on shore, I won’t let you off!"
Da Zai and Er Zai were about to throw more stones when their mother stopped them.
’I was in the right, so I could hit her. But if my sons start throwing stones, they’ll be in the wrong.’
The two boys obediently held back and stopped throwing stones.
Hearing Changsheng’s mother’s curses, Er Zai snorted, put his hands on his hips, and declared, "So we’ll wait! I’m not afraid of you!"
Having heard that Gu Laosan’s wife was in a fight, Mother Gu came rushing over, followed by Huang Xiulan and Zhao Liuniang.
"Da Zai! Er Zai! Are you all right?" Mother Gu’s booming voice arrived before she did.
Er Zai, ever the tattletale, immediately began to complain loudly, "Grandma, someone was bullying my mom and me! And she said she was going to give our family’s kids what-for!"
Changsheng’s mother trembled with rage. ’...’ ’Nonsense! When did I ever say I’d give them what-for!?’
Mother Gu stormed over, her sharp gaze sweeping across the crowd. "Who was it?"
"Who dares bully my Gu Family’s daughter-in-law and my Gu Family’s grandchildren!"
Zhao Liuniang, hands on her hips and looking every bit the spitfire, roared from behind, "Who the hell was it? Show yourself! See if I don’t cave your head in!"
Huang Xiulan stood beside her mother-in-law, her eyes scanning the scene before finally settling on the drenched woman in the river.
When Changsheng’s mother saw how many people from the Gu Family had shown up, she wished she could just dive into the water and swim away. Unfortunately, she couldn’t swim and didn’t dare venture into the deeper parts of the river. She was beginning to regret provoking Lin Zhao.
And at that very moment, Er Zai pointed right at her. "It’s her! It’s her! It’s Changsheng’s mother!"
"Changsheng’s mother was bullying my mom, and my brother and me!"
Third Child and Fourth Child, feeling left out by Er Guo, piped up in their baby voices, "Us!"
"Us!!"
Lin Zhao didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. ’...’ ’These two can’t even speak properly. What are they getting involved for?’
She looked at Mother Gu, her expression grave. "Mother, Changsheng’s mother cursed a soldier! Her ideology is corrupt. She needs a thorough ideological re-education, one that gets to her very core!"
The color drained from Changsheng’s mother’s face. She frantically denied it. "I did not! I was just trying to advise you not to be so lazy! How can you not recognize good intentions when you see them?"
"Tch," Lin Zhao scoffed. "And who are you to tell me what to do? What I do is none of your damn business. If you have the guts to say it, have the guts to own up to it. The children are watching. Don’t make them look down on you."
