The Broken Halo
Chapter 940 - 939: Four Points Of Ruin
The ridge was still collapsing when Simon moved again.
His left hand tightened around the God of War’s face. He hauled the god out of the crater, turned his wrist, and drove him down cheek-first.
BANG!
Then he ran.
Crimson lightning flashed along his legs. Wind gathered behind him, and his first step tore a trench through the broken stone.
BOOM!
The God of War’s body dragged beside him.
His face ploughed through the ground beneath Simon’s palm, throwing up a continuous spray of rock. The sound was swallowed by the shockwave following them.
However, Simon heard the groan against his fingers.
He accelerated.
There was no spatial fold this time. Nothing vanished between one place and another.
Simon crossed the entire distance.
And the land showed it.
A wall of compressed air raced ahead of him. Boulders lifted before his feet reached them, then burst apart as the god’s body struck through.
The Chaos Blade vanished from his right hand.
Its dark outline settled inside the Chaos Flame.
Simon leaned into the next turn.
The God of War tried to brace his remaining hand against the ground. Iron-grey Aether gathered beneath his palm.
But Simon jerked him upward before it could settle.
He slammed him into the side of a ridge.
BOOOOOOM!
Stone folded around the god’s head.
A harsh grunt escaped him.
Simon dragged him along the rock face without slowing. The ridge opened in a horizontal groove, its upper ledges collapsing behind them.
The god’s hammer had already dissolved. Now even the armour around his shoulder scraped away in bright fragments.
He tried to speak.
Simon drove him through a jutting wall of stone.
BANG!
The words became another groan.
A mountain slope rose ahead.
Simon did not change direction.
He lowered his shoulder, tightened the wind around his body, and used the god’s face to break the first obstruction.
Then the next.
They ripped through the foot of the mountain, trailing crimson lightning through a tunnel of shattered rock.
Above their path, the slope began sliding.
But they had already emerged.
Enigma followed the destruction with widening eyes.
He could track Simon.
The disturbing part was watching the God of War fail to secure even a moment in which to stop him.
Every time Aether gathered, Simon changed the angle, struck another obstacle, or tore him away from anything he could use to brace himself.
Then Simon stopped.
The wind did not.
It swept past them, peeling loose stone from the ground in a widening fan.
Simon hauled the god upright and released his face.
For an instant, the bloodied body hung before him.
His right fist drew back.
Demonic energy filled his arm. Wind tightened around his knuckles, and crimson tribulation lightning crawled between his fingers.
The God of War’s remaining hand rose to block the incoming attack.
Simon’s punch reached his face first.
BOOOOOOM!
A white ring of compressed air burst outward.
The god flew backward, struck the ground, and bounced.
Once across a ridge.
Again through a field of rubble.
His body spun, struck shoulder-first, and carved a long furrow before crashing into a distant mountain.
BANG!
Cracks raced upward from the impact.
They split across the mountainside, reaching ledges far above his head.
The God of War dragged air into his lungs as he gasped for air.
Simon was already there.
His white hair streamed behind him as he drove another fist into the god’s face.
BAM!
The mountain shook.
The God of War’s head struck deeper into the rock.
Simon stepped forward and punched again.
BAM!
And again.
BAM!
Each blow drove the god farther into the mountain. Stone collapsed around Simon’s shoulders, only for the wind surrounding him to hurl it backward.
Iron-grey light flashed beneath his next fist.
A shield.
It took the blow, but the impact still drove the shield and god deeper.
Simon struck before it recovered.
The shield cracked.
His next punch broke through it.
Blood splashed across his knuckles.
The God of War snarled and twisted, trying to move off the line of attack.
However, there was nowhere to go except through the rock.
Simon’s fist answered the movement.
The mountain’s far side bulged.
Then burst.
Both figures emerged through an eruption of shattered stone.
The God of War hit the ground and tumbled, leaving blood across the rubble. Behind him, Simon stepped out of the collapsing passage.
His breathing was steady.
He shook fragments of stone from his hand and began walking.
Ahead, the god rolled onto his side, struck another broken ledge, and finally slammed against an enormous boulder.
Cracks spread across its entire face.
The boulder held, barely.
Simon then increased his pace.
Wind lifted his long hair.
Crimson lightning flashed.
CLAP!
Thunder clapped as he crossed the intervening ground in a streak, his fist already drawing back.
But this time, a hand shot out of the dust and it closed around his throat.
Simon’s forward motion stopped so violently that a shockwave burst behind his back.
The God of War rose from the shattered footing beneath the boulder while holding Simon’s neck.
Blood covered his face. One eye was swollen, and fury sharpened the other.
"Who do you think you are?"
His fingers tightened.
"Just because you became a Daemon, you think you’re equal to me?!"
"THE GOD OF WAR?!!!!"
Simon’s eyes went cold.
He tilted his head slightly against the grip.
"I really hate being held by the neck."
Something closed around the god’s arm, causing his expression to change.
There was no hand upon his wrist. No chain. No obvious spell wrapping the limb.
Yet a terrible pressure had settled upon his forearm.
He knew this feeling.
Or something close to it.
Gods could command more than the movement of their own power. What mortals called telekinesis was sometimes the world itself obeying a higher authority.
But this was coming from a Greater Demon.
The god’s wrist turned against his intention despite trying to use his aether to prevent this foreign force from damaging his arm.
His elbow remained fixed while the forearm twisted farther.
Aether surged beneath his skin and tried resisting.
Simon’s jaw tightened under the strain.
Then the Seed of Pride pressed harder.
A sharp crack came from the arm.
"Impossible!"
The god released Simon immediately.
His power flared. Before the twisting force could tear through the limb’s deeper pathways, he teleported away.
An iron-grey flash appeared high above the ruined ground.
He emerged with his remaining arm pulled against his chest, fingers trembling as he forced the joint back toward its proper position.
Barely a second later, thunder cracked below him.
Simon shot upward on a burst of wind and stopped directly before his face.
A demonic grin spread across his mouth.
"You asked who I think I am?"
The God of War began raising his head.
"Call me daddy, God of War, because I own you, bitch."
The god stared with wide eyes.
For one absurd instant, the fury on his face gave way to complete incomprehension.
Far behind them, Enigma’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
He too was stunned.
Lilith’s voice reached Simon’s mind.
[All that power, and that was what you chose to say?]
Simon’s grin almost faltered.
’Why the fuck did I say that?’
He wanted to drag the words back into his mouth.
Unfortunately, everyone had heard them.
And he still had a god to kill.
Light travelled through his four horns.
The cube fed each one separately, guiding compressed power through the narrowing passages inside them.
Four points formed just in front of the horns.
Crimson lightning.
Pale, tightly spinning wind.
Orange fire.
And a knot of shadow energy so dense that the light beside it seemed dimmer.
The fire was ordinary elemental fire, not the Chaos Flame.
But that did not make the heat gathering within it gentle.
Simon kept the four powers apart as they compressed. The crimson point shook with trapped discharges. The wind became a bright, trembling bead. Fire shrank around an almost white centre.
The fourth point hid everything behind a patch of absolute black.
The God of War felt the danger before the lights finished gathering.
His instincts shrieked.
They were too close.
Simon grinned.
"Goodnight son."
"You fucking-!"
The four points opened, and the beams struck toward him.
The God of War forced his injured arm forward, and an iron-grey shield unfolded before his face.
It had scarcely covered his chest when the attacks hit.
KRAAABOOOOOM!
Lightning spread across the shield. Compressed wind struck beside it, forcing the barrier backward, while fire and shadow hammered into the remaining surface.
The god was hurled downward behind it.
Three blazing trails and a black streak cut through the air after him.
The ground rose to meet them.
Then disappeared beneath the impact.
Crimson lightning tore outward through the buried rock. Orange fire erupted along the opening fractures, while the compressed wind drove a circular wall of earth into the sky.
Boulders climbed above the ridges before being ground apart.
Shadow poured through the rising debris, hiding the centre of the devastation beneath a churning black mass.
The shockwave reached the mountain they had just torn through.
Its cracked face gave way.
Whole sections slid into the widening crater as fire climbed behind them and lightning branched from one falling slab to another.
Another thunderous detonation rolled beneath the ground.
The crater’s rim split outward, and the wall of dust swallowed the place where the God of War had fallen.
