The Broken Halo
Chapter 858 - 857: Protect Me
A grain of stone shifted beneath Sonya’s fingertip. Then another.
The movement was small enough to disappear beneath the blizzard, but she felt it. Something answered through the frozen road, reaching past the pain and the cold spreading from the spear in her stomach.
Sonya turned her attention inward and found the balance she had maintained since awakening. Earth and metal. Two affinities she had treated as separate, although part of one had belonged to the other long before her Chaos Flame existed.
She had moved it once. She could move it back.
Her first attempt brought a spasm through her body. Blood slipped between her lips, and the connection almost vanished. She held on, following the portion of her earth affinity she had transferred into metal.
It was not stored demonic energy. She could not simply draw it through her pathways. She had to undo the change itself, letting that part of her affinity return to what it had originally been.
The metal around her became less distinct. Beneath it, the earth grew clearer. Her natural metal affinity remained, but the portion that had once belonged to earth began returning to its origin.
The stone beneath her back trembled. Her awareness stretched painfully with it, reaching farther each time she loosened the arrangement she had once made.
’Mum... You said anywhere.’
She had changed herself to stop hurting others. Now keeping that change would leave her helpless while someone killed the few demons who still stayed beside her.
Sonya loosened the balance further. Warmth stirred around her Demon Heart, and her Chaos Flame rose against the freezing Aether, forcing a thin current of demonic energy through pathways that had almost stopped responding.
Cultivation was not the only way a demon grew stronger. Devouring human hearts or demonic hearts could feed their power. Repeated battles and brushes with death could also drive a Chaos Flame beyond its previous limits.
There had been an age when fighting and surviving were the only path demons knew. Some believed their love of battle began there.
Not every wound brought strength. Countless demons died without advancing. But those who survived sometimes gained far more than ordinary cultivation would have given them.
It was one reason even experienced Demon Slayers dreaded a prolonged fight against talented demons. An enemy driven to the edge of death could become stronger before they finished killing it.
That change had begun inside Sonya.
Meanwhile, Ammor staggered beneath Akaza’s weight.
While Sonya had been lost in her memories, he and Virella had finally accepted that staying would accomplish nothing. Ammor carried the wounded Martial Demon, keeping his ruined right arm from dragging against the ice.
Virella followed, looking back toward Rellis’s body until the blizzard hid him.
"We can’t fight her," she whispered. Her voice shook, but she kept moving. "We have to get out of this storm."
Akaza tried to turn toward Sonya, but the immense pain he was feeling stopped him before he could lift his head.
"There is no use," Elara said, watching them retreat.
She remained where she was and stretched out her hand.
Ice suddenly rose across their path, sealing the gap between two ruined walls. Ammor stopped so abruptly that Akaza groaned against him.
Elara swept her hand forward, and freezing air struck their backs.
Virella tried to raise her arms and summon roots. However, the ice caught her wrists before her hands came together, climbed her shoulders, and closed over her chest. Beside her, Ammor’s boots froze to the ground.
The cold enclosed Akaza where he hung against him. Within a heartbeat, all three were motionless.
Ice covered their bodies up to their chin, leaving their mouths exposed. Virella could still breathe, but every breath pulled against the pressure surrounding her ribs.
"I learned that this is a slow death," Elara said, approaching them. "It’s both painful and cruel. You remain aware while the cold works its way inside."
"You’re a sadist," Virella forced out.
Elara stopped.
"You could have killed us immediately. Sonya too. You just want to watch us suffer."
"Why should demons be granted an easy death?" Elara’s golden eyes became deathly cold. There was no amusement left in her voice.
"You cross into our world, butcher our people, and laugh while doing it. You burn homes with families inside them. You rape the surviving women if you’re lucky to win. Then you call us cruel because we refuse to make your deaths comfortable?"
Her fingers tightened around her staff.
"You should suffer for every life you take. For every sin you’ve committed, and every scream you’ve caused."
Virella’s reply died in her throat. Ammor stared at the hatred on Elara’s face, and even Akaza stopped struggling. It was not merely anger toward the demons before her, there was something far deeper behind those words.
"And when-"
A tremor passed beneath Elara’s boots.
She looked down. The ice did not crack from above. Instead, stone was pushing against it from beneath.
Sonya’s Chaos Flame beat with her heart.
Each pulse drove warmth farther through her injured body. The spear remained lodged inside her. Her wounds had not closed, but the cold no longer advanced without resistance.
The last portion of affinity she had transferred began returning, and Sonya felt the difference everywhere.
The ground was no longer something she struggled to reach through the ice. Rock beneath the road, buried stones, distant slopes, each entered her awareness as pressure, depth, and shape.
No colours. No sight. But an extent of earth she had never dared to feel since childhood answered at once.
Her true affinity returned.
THUD!
Her Chaos Flame surged.
The pressure within her Infernal Heart changed. Power pressed against the limit she had occupied for so long, and the heart itself began responding, its walls tightening beneath the flame.
’A breakthrough...?’
Surprise cut through the pain. She was beginning the transition into a Forged Heart.
A Greater Demon.
’Here...?’
Earth’s World Law pressed against the rising demonic power. Aether crowded the surroundings and resisted her instead of nourishing her. Even drawing in the scattered demonic energy around the battlefield felt like pulling something through clenched fingers.
This was a terrible place to advance.
’Can’t... stop now.’
Stopping would leave her pinned beneath a spear until the cold reached her heart. Sonya let the transformation continue.
Elara turned toward the fallen Kragh.
Pebbles had risen around Sonya without scattering. Farther away, cracks crossed the frozen road, spreading outward in time with the heavy pulse coming from her body.
"Her aura..." Elara’s expression tightened.
The phoenix raised its head. All four wings spread, and its long tail feathers drew back from the shaking ground. Snow streamed from its body, but the stones kept rising through it.
Elara’s eyes flashed with a baffled light for a moment before she recalled something she was taught and warned about by old and experienced Demon Slayers.
’Demons could advance during a life and death battle, so make sure not to make a battle with a terrifying battle a prolonged one.’
The ground beneath her feet no longer felt secure.
"No."
Her staff flashed into position. She abandoned the frozen survivors and shot toward Sonya, gathering a blade of freezing Aether along its head.
Whatever was happening had to end now.
Sonya felt the approaching pressure of her aura. She could not move her body even if she wanted to. Blood filled her mouth when she tried to breathe, and the spear still held her against the ground.
Only her fingers shifted.
’Protect me.’
The earth answered.
A boulder tore from the ridge and struck Elara’s descending staff.
BOOM!
It froze and shattered. Another hit before the fragments cleared. Then three more arrived together, forcing Elara sideways as stones erupted between her and Sonya.
They were not coming from the clearing alone.
Across the battlefield, broken ground lifted. Rocks pulled free from hillsides. Pieces of exposed mountain stone cracked loose and flew toward Frostveil through smoke and snow.
Humans and demons ducked beneath them. A cannon crew abandoned its weapon as a chunk of hillside swept over their heads.
Elara struck again. The first layers burst apart, but more replaced them before her attack could reach the body beneath.
The bedrock carrying Sonya rose without disturbing the spear embedded through her. Around it, slabs folded upward and curved overhead, leaving space around her wounded body.
Boulders struck the outside and locked together. The earth packed every gap.
Within moments, a vast shell stood where the dying Kragh had lain, its surface thickening beneath the rain of arriving stone. Sonya disappeared inside it.
Elara landed before the sealed shell, her staff clenched in both hands.
"Fuck!"
