The Briar-Route Waystation: I Bought a Run-Down Tavern in the Boundless Wilds
Chapter 220: The Road Has Room Again
The first dry snow arrived overnight, falling in complete silence and coating the churned clay of the yard in fine white powder.
Barnaby remained inside his stall. He stared down at the white layer covering the lip of his exit, his nostrils flared. He refused the threshold. Elian fetched a snow shovel and scraped the timber clean, tossing the powder aside until the dark wood showed through. Barnaby extended one hoof, tested the scraped surface, and stepped out into the yard.
Acceptable. Management may proceed.
Elian leaned on the shovel handle. He wiped a stray flake from his cheek. "It felt like summer three weeks ago. We had mud and heat. Now we have powder."
Heda passed him carrying two empty buckets. "The mountaintops started melting," she said. "The runoff wakes the ice elementals in the high peaks. They hate the damp. They get upset and freeze the air for a while until they calm down and go back to sleep."
Elian stared at her. "We are experiencing a cold snap because magic ice is throwing a tantrum."
"Yes," Heda said. "Dress warmer."
The fresh snow gave texture to the clear glaze ice underneath. It provided traction in places where boots had previously skated, while simultaneously burying visual hazards inside the frozen ruts.
Kaelis trotted into the yard before midmorning, bringing the first reduced winter freight report. She stood near the hearth while Elian read the parameters Korrin had established for the route. The rules dictated smaller loads, longer spacing, and daylight crossings. Heavy freight traffic would bypass Blackroot Run entirely until the stone repair finished.
Dorvik and Orra delivered a timber and masonry estimate for that repair. Elian looked at the total and groaned.
"Groaning does not reduce timber cost," Bruna said from the stove.
The ledger remained ugly. The waystation had survived the flood and the boar displacement, leaving the math waiting for payment. Elian counted low flour reserves, repair debt from the broken gate, damaged rope, replacement tools due for the yard crew, and an unpaid merchant invoice. Winter had several weeks left to run.
Commerce returned alongside the weather. The taproom filled with conversation. Merchants rolled dice at the corner tables, teamsters argued over cargo space, and travelers debated the ice conditions over mugs of hot tea. The paid rooms began filling with people avoiding the cold. Hot meals moved across the bar. Stable fees resumed. The business brought silver back into the lockbox through actual trade.
Sif left the route table and walked to the bar, leaving her wooden staff leaning against the bench. She managed the distance on her own two feet. Her calf swelled an hour later, forcing her back into the chair to elevate the joint.
Skade came through the front door from a north signal check. She bypassed the bar, walked to the staff chart, and moved her own peg from the OUT column to HOME. Heda watched her and grinned in absolute silence.
Varg ran a relief-crew drill in the snowy mud near the gate. Elian joined the line after Merren examined his shoulder and cleared the joint for restricted movement. Varg checked his stance and corrected his feet once. Elian shifted his heel to the proper angle before she initiated the second push.
Torra returned from the South Watch, dropped her glaive near the door, walked to Elian’s table, and took half his bread. Heda reached across the ledger and grabbed the other piece. Rylia picked up his tea.
Elian looked at Bruna. “Do I own anything in this building?”
“The debt,” Bruna said.
Marris approached the Copy Desk with the Fire-Share master slate and set it down for Heda's review. He had corrected a column error while keeping his hands completely clear of the restricted sections above it.
Heda checked the numbers. “Good.”
Marris nodded and returned to his stool.
Bram’s trade load arrived after noon. A scheduled merchant wagon hauled it south from the North Refuge, proving the physical chain functioned. The haul contained dry charcoal, split wood, sealed pine resin, and a bundle of rough pelts. Bruna valued the goods at strict road prices and marked the exact sum against the loggers' account.
Talyra stopped in the taproom for food. She confirmed the wildlife gap at the North Refuge remained clear of ice and the tree line stayed free of permanent wire.
Pellor swapped a cracked shielded lamp near the porch.
Rask approached the bar to collect payment for the repair timber used during the herd diversion. Elian counted the silver and winced at the amount. Rask pocketed the full sum and returned to the yard.
Near evening, Vaelia walked through the front doors. She returned from her scheduled North Refuge rotation with steady steps and a clean spear. The common room continued its noise around her.
Vaelia unfastened her frost-white cloak and hung it on the permanent peg beside her daughters' gear. Bruna put a bowl of stew down at the corner booth. Vaelia sat and picked up her spoon.
Elian walked over to the booth with a fresh cup of water. He set it near her bowl. "Are you always this active? I read the Oakhaven reports on retired Vanguard leaders. They usually occupy estates and manage pensions."
Vaelia swallowed a bite of stew. "I was on vacation the last time you saw me, Elian. Even retired, I serve where the line requires bodies. The road needed a guard, and I have the strength for it."
Rylia’s presence held the room. Vaelia ate her stew at the corner table.
Elian finished the day's ordinary ledger: rooms, meals, hay, repair expense, Fire-Share stock, one late-paying merchant, and two broken mugs.
Barnaby received his posted apple hazard allowance in his trough. He ate the fruit in three bites. He lifted his head and looked toward the sealed apple barrel in the pantry.
Compensation remains structurally inadequate.
