The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 73: The Promise

  • Next Chapter

The fortress gates came into view as the sun began to disappear behind the distant mountains.

Nobody spoke for a while. The journey back had been quieter than the journey there.

Perhaps because everyone was thinking about the same things.

The key or about the choice.

The person who had walked away. The broken clock and Aiden’s strange recognition of a moment he couldn’t remember.

Rin walked beside Kaelith, their hands still loosely connected. Neither of them had mentioned the System’s suggestion again.

Mostly because Rin knew exactly what would happen if he did. The System would become unbearable and Rin valued his remaining sanity.

A few steps ahead, Sol was checking the detector. Noctis glanced at him.

"Still nothing?"

Sol shook his head.

"Nothing unusual since we left the forest."

"Good."

Ji-ho sighed dramatically.

"Can we agree that ’nothing unusual’ is the best result?"

Noctis looked at him.

"Probably."

"Excellent."

Ji-ho nodded.

"I vote we keep having boring days."

Aiden glanced at him.

"You said that last week."

"And?"

"Three hours later, a demon attacked the eastern wall."

Ji-ho considered this.

"...Then I would like to withdraw my previous statement."

Rin laughed. Kaelith smiled beside him and for a few seconds, everything felt normal again.

Then Rin noticed Sol looking at the detector.

Not worried. Just thoughtful.

"Something wrong?"

Sol looked up.

"No."

Rin raised an eyebrow.

"You’re staring at that thing like it personally offended you."

Sol sighed.

"I’m trying to understand the readings."

"Did you find anything?"

"Not yet."

Noctis added:

"We should compare them with the old records once we return."

Rin nodded.

"Good."

He didn’t push further.

They had enough mysteries. There was no reason to force another one into existence.

The moment they entered the fortress, several guards greeted them. Nothing seemed unusual.

The halls were busy. Servants were carrying supplies.

Knights were returning from patrol. Everything looked exactly as it should.

Rin almost relaxed. Almost but then the System appeared.

[HOST.]

Rin closed his eyes.

"No."

[THE SYSTEM HAS A QUESTION.]

"I don’t like that sentence."

Kaelith glanced at him.

"What is it?"

"Nothing."

[WHEN WILL THE DATE TAKE PLACE?]

Rin nearly tripped. Kaelith caught his arm.

"You okay?"

Rin stared straight ahead.

"Yes."

[HOST IS LYING TO HIMSELF.]

Rin’s eyes widened.

"I am not."

Kaelith looked amused.

"You seem distracted."

"Your fault."

"My fault?"

"Maybe."

Kaelith smiled.

"Then I’m sorry."

Rin tried not to smile. The System appeared again.

[ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT: 17%.]

Rin sighed.

"You are obsessed."

[YES.]

At least it was honest. They reached the main hall. Sol immediately turned toward the eastern workshop.

"I’m going to compare today’s readings with yesterday’s."

Noctis followed.

"I’ll help."

Rin nodded.

"Don’t stay up all night."

Sol looked at him.

"You know I can’t promise that."

"Then at least try."

Noctis smiled.

"We’ll try."

Ji-ho looked at them.

"I’ll help too."

Sol stared at him.

"Do you know anything about magical detectors?"

"No."

"Then no."

Ji-ho looked offended.

"I can provide emotional support."

Noctis laughed.

"We’ll survive."

Ji-ho sighed.

"Nobody appreciates me."

Aiden patted his shoulder.

"I appreciate your food."

Ji-ho looked at him.

"Finally."

Aiden continued:

"But only your food."

Ji-ho’s smile disappeared.

"Never mind."

Rin laughed. Then he noticed Aiden looking toward the hallway.

"You okay?"

Aiden nodded.

"Yes."

Rin waited. Aiden looked at him.

"I was just thinking about the clock."

Rin’s smile faded slightly.

"You don’t have to remember."

"I know."

"And you don’t have to force it."

"I know."

Aiden smiled.

"That’s why I’m not trying."

Rin nodded.

"Good."

Aiden walked away. Ji-ho followed him, and after a few steps, Ji-ho whispered loudly:

"So, when you remember, can you tell me?"

Aiden sighed.

"Maybe."

"Excellent."

Rin smiled. At least Ji-ho was back to being Ji-ho.

Later that evening, Rin returned to his room. He placed the silver key on his desk.

For several minutes, he simply stared at it. It looked ordinary.

Almost disappointingly ordinary.

No light, no magic. no strange symbols, nothing.

Rin touched it. Still nothing. He smiled faintly.

"Good."

He sat down. Then he opened his notebook.

He didn’t write anything new. Instead, he read the old notes.

The key was given.

The door was closed.

The choice remained.

The chosen one walked away.

Rin stared at the final sentence. He still didn’t know what it meant but something about it bothered him.

Not because it was frightening. Because it felt personal. The words weren’t describing some random ancient event.

They felt like a piece of his own history and that was what made them dangerous.

Rin closed the notebook.

"I’ll find out."

A soft knock came at the door. Rin looked up.

"Come in."

Kaelith entered.

Rin smiled.

"You again?"

"I can leave."

"No."

Kaelith closed the door.

For a moment, he simply stood there. Then he looked at Rin.

"Do you want to talk?"

Rin leaned back.

"About the mystery?"

"If you want."

Rin shook his head.

"Not tonight."

Kaelith nodded.

"Then what?"

Rin thought.

"I don’t know."

Kaelith smiled.

"That’s allowed."

Rin laughed softly.

"Apparently."

Kaelith sat beside him. Neither spoke for a while.

It was comfortable, there was no pressure, no questions, no expectations.

Eventually Rin said:

"You really meant it?"

Kaelith looked at him.

"About what?"

"The date."

Kaelith smiled.

"Yes."

Rin looked away.

"You didn’t have to agree."

"I wanted to."

Rin’s face warmed slightly.

"You’re making this difficult."

"How?"

"Because I’m trying to pretend I’m not nervous."

Kaelith laughed softly.

"You are nervous."

"I know."

"Why?"

Rin shrugged.

"I don’t know."

Kaelith looked at him.

"Then don’t worry about it."

Rin smiled.

"Easy for you to say."

"Maybe."

Kaelith reached for Rin’s hand. Rin let him and for a few seconds, they remained like that.

Then—

[HOST.]

Rin closed his eyes.

"Don’t."

[ROMANTIC MISSION AVAILABLE.]

Rin opened one eye.

"I knew it."

Kaelith laughed.

"What now?"

Rin slowly read the window.

[ROMANTIC SYSTEM — OPTIONAL MISSION]

Objective: Spend uninterrupted time with Kaelith.

Requirement: No mystery investigation.

Reward: +1% Romantic Development.

Rin stared.

"You can’t be serious."

Kaelith leaned closer.

"What does it say?"

Rin showed him. Kaelith read it. Then smiled.

"That sounds reasonable."

Rin looked at him.

"You agree?"

"Yes."

"But there’s no actual mission."

Kaelith raised an eyebrow.

"The mission is spending time together."

Rin blinked.

"Oh."

The System added:

[SYSTEM RECOMMENDS NOT OVERTHINKING.]

Rin stared at the window.

"That’s rich coming from you."

The System disappeared. Kaelith laughed.

They eventually left Rin’s room, not for the forest, not for the archives, not for another mysterious door... just the fortress gardens.

The night was peaceful. The lights from the fortress windows illuminated the paths.

Rin and Kaelith walked slowly. For once, Rin didn’t think about the past.

They talked about smaller things. Favorite foods. Places they wanted to visit. Things they hadn’t done yet.

At one point, Rin mentioned that he wanted to see the ocean again. Kaelith looked at him.

"You’ve been?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"I don’t remember the name."

Kaelith laughed.

"Of course."

"Why?"

"You remember ancient mysteries but forget the name of a place."

"Important things stay."

"And the ocean wasn’t important?"

"It was beautiful."

Kaelith smiled.

"Then maybe we’ll go."

Rin looked at him.

"Together?"

"Of course."

Rin smiled.

"Okay."

They continued walking, was peacefull with no System, no ancient voices, no visions.. just the quiet sound of their footsteps.

For once, Rin was happy not knowing what came next.

Meanwhile, in the eastern workshop, Sol placed the detector beside the old records.

Noctis watched.

"Anything?"

Sol shook his head.

"The readings from the forest are almost completely gone."

"Almost?"

Sol pointed. One tiny line remained. Noctis frowned.

"That’s not normal."

"No."

"Where is it coming from?"

Sol looked at the detector. Then slowly turned toward the fortress walls.

"I don’t know."

Noctis studied the line.

"It wasn’t there before."

Sol nodded.

"That’s what worries me."

Neither noticed that, in the corridor outside the workshop, a faint silver mark appeared on the stone.

Only for a second.

Then vanished.

In the gardens, Rin suddenly stopped. Kaelith looked at him.

"What?"

Rin smiled.

"Nothing."

"You stopped."

"I know."

"Why?"

Rin looked around. The gardens were peaceful. Everything was normal.

And yet... for the briefest moment, he had felt something.

Was not a voice, not a vision. Just warmth. Almost like someone far away had remembered him.

Rin shook his head.

"Probably nothing."

Kaelith didn’t question him. Instead, he simply continued walking.

Rin followed. After a few steps, he quietly took Kaelith’s hand again.

Kaelith looked down. Then smiled. Neither said anything.

Much later, Rin returned to his room. The System appeared one final time.

[OPTIONAL MISSION COMPLETE.]

Rin smiled.

"Reward?"

[ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT: 18%.]

Rin blinked.

"Wait."

He looked at the number.

"We actually increased?"

[YES.]

Rin laughed.

"That’s surprisingly reasonable."

[SYSTEM IS CAPABLE OF REASON.]

"Sometimes."

[VERY RARELY.]

Rin smiled.

Then the System disappeared. Rin looked toward the silver key. It remained exactly where he’d left it.

Silent. Waiting. He didn’t touch it, he didn’t need to.

Tonight wasn’t about the mystery. Tomorrow could be but tonight, Rin had something else.

A small promise. A date. A future that belonged to him and for the first time in a long time, that was enough.

But deep beneath the fortress... far below the rooms where Sol and Noctis worked...

something old had noticed the key.

A faint silver light appeared inside a sealed wall.

One line. Then another. Until a symbol slowly formed.

The same symbol from the forest. The same symbol from the ancient records.

And beneath it, words appeared.

THE CHOSEN ONE HAS REMEMBERED THE CHOICE.

The light disappeared.

Nobody saw it. Because the mystery wasn’t ready to reveal its answer. It was only beginning to move.

Rin remained by the window for several minutes after the System disappeared.

The fortress was quiet now.

Most of the lights had gone out, and the corridors that were usually filled with voices were almost silent.

He looked toward the distant forest. Somewhere beyond those trees was the ancient arch.

He could still picture it. The strange room. The person sitting beside the window.

The silver key being placed on the table and the words carved into the stone.

The chosen one walked away.

Rin slowly touched his chest. There was still that strange ache.

Not painful just familiar. As if some part of him already knew the answer but refused to give it to him.

"One step at a time," he whispered.

He didn’t want to force his memories, he didn’t want to turn every strange feeling into a theory.

For now, he had enough. He had the key. He had the symbol.

He had Aiden’s memory of the broken clock. He had the mysterious connection between the door and his forgotten past and, perhaps most importantly, he had people beside him.

Rin smiled.

"Tomorrow."

He turned away from the window. Then stopped. For the briefest moment, he thought he heard something.

Not a voice. Not the System. Just a faint sound carried through the night.

Almost like someone whispering his name from very far away. Rin looked back toward the forest.

Nothing was there. He smiled faintly.

"Not tonight."

And he closed the curtains. Tomorrow, the search would continue.

But tonight, Rin allowed himself to rest. He need to rest...
