Chapter 68: The Road Back

The road back to the fortress was quiet.

Rin walked between Sol and Noctis, his hands tucked into his coat pockets.

The silver key was still there. Cold. Silent.

For once, Rin wasn’t trying to figure it out. He had already decided. The hidden doorway could wait.

The strange symbol could wait. The questions about his past could wait. He had spent enough time chasing answers that seemed determined to stay just out of reach.

Today, he had learned something more important. His mother couldn’t see everything. Even with her ability to see possible futures, there were things hidden from her.

And that meant Rin couldn’t simply ask someone else to solve his life for him. He would have to discover it himself.

Slowly. Carefully. One piece at a time. Sol broke the silence.

"You’ve been quiet for a while."

Rin looked at him.

"I’m thinking."

Sol smiled.

"About the doorway?"

"Yes."

Noctis glanced back.

"You’re going to investigate it tomorrow?"

Rin shook his head.

"Maybe."

Noctis raised an eyebrow.

"Maybe?"

Rin smiled.

"We don’t know enough yet."

Sol looked pleased.

"That’s probably the smartest thing you’ve said all day."

Rin stared at him.

"Are you insulting me?"

"No."

Sol was genuinely being sincere. Rin laughed.

"Fine."

Noctis smiled.

"I agree with him."

Rin looked at Noctis.

"Don’t encourage him."

"I wasn’t."

"You were."

"Maybe."

Rin shook his head.

"You two are becoming impossible."

Sol laughed.

"You’re just noticing?"

They continued walking. The sun was beginning to disappear behind the trees. Rin looked back once. Their mother’s house was already hidden by the forest he felt strangely peaceful.

There had been no dramatic revelation. No ancient prophecy. No forgotten name and yet the visit had helped.

His mother had reminded him of something he had almost forgotten. The future wasn’t fixed. She had seen countless possibilities.

Some were good some were terrible some ended with Rin disappearing but they were possibilities.

Not promises. Not destiny. Rin looked ahead.

"Sol."

"Hm?"

"Do you ever think about what you were before?"

Sol’s steps slowed slightly. Noctis looked toward him. Sol was quiet for several seconds. Then he answered:

"Sometimes."

Rin waited. Sol continued.

"I remember being a System."

Rin nodded.

"I know."

"I remember the curse."

"I know."

"But sometimes..."

Sol looked down at his hands.

"...I wonder if there was something before that."

Rin became quiet.

"Do you remember anything?"

"No."

Sol genuinely didn’t remember. Rin nodded.

"Maybe one day."

Sol smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

Noctis walked beside them.

"You don’t have to remember everything either."

Sol looked at him. Noctis shrugged.

"You’re here now."

Sol smiled.

"That’s surprisingly wise."

"Don’t get used to it."

Rin laughed. When they reached the fortress gates, the guards greeted them. Rin immediately noticed something.

The atmosphere felt different not dangerous. Just tense. Sol noticed too.

"Something happened."

Noctis nodded.

"I felt it."

Rin looked around.

"What?"

One of the guards approached.

"Lord Sol."

Sol turned.

"Yes?"

"The eastern barrier reacted while you were gone."

Sol frowned.

"Reacted how?"

"It activated by itself."

Rin looked at him.

"Was there an attack?"

"No."

The guard shook his head.

"We couldn’t find anything."

Noctis stepped forward.

"How long did it stay active?"

"About thirty seconds."

Sol’s expression became serious.

"Did anything cross it?"

"We don’t know."

The guard hesitated.

"But..."

"But what?"

"One of the detection crystals recorded an energy signature."

Rin frowned.

"What kind?"

The guard looked at Sol.

"Unknown."

Sol’s expression hardened.

"Show me."

The guard nodded. Sol immediately started toward the eastern tower. Noctis followed.

Rin followed too.

"Wait."

Sol turned.

"Stay here."

Rin frowned.

"Why?"

"Because we don’t know what we’re dealing with."

Rin crossed his arms.

"You know that’s not going to work."

Sol sighed.

"I know."

Noctis smiled.

"I told you."

Sol looked at him.

"You’re not helping."

"I know."

Rin laughed.

They continued toward the eastern tower. The detection crystal was still glowing faintly. Sol approached it carefully.

He pulled out a small instrument and placed it against the crystal. The light changed.

He frowned.

"Interesting."

Rin stepped closer.

"What?"

Sol pointed.

"The signature isn’t coming from outside."

Rin looked at the crystal.

"Then where?"

Sol slowly turned.

"Inside the fortress."

Everyone became silent. Noctis immediately drew his weapon.

"Where?"

Sol closed his eyes.

"Wait."

He concentrated. The crystal pulsed. Once. Twice. Then stopped. Sol opened his eyes.

"Library."

Rin froze.

"The library?"

Sol nodded.

"Yes."

Noctis looked at Rin.

"That’s where all your strange things keep happening."

Rin sighed.

"Apparently."

They moved quickly. The library doors were open and Rin stopped before entering. He remembered the previous night. The crystal. The strange message. The voice.

The one you promised.

He hadn’t told anyone about that. He stepped inside. Nothing appeared wrong. Books remained where they belonged.

Tables were untouched. The ancient records were still there. Sol examined the room.

"Nothing."

Noctis walked toward the shelves.

"Check the magical residue."

Sol nodded.

He began scanning the room. Rin looked toward his desk. The silver key wasn’t there. Of course. He had it with him. Then he noticed something. A book was lying open on the floor.

Rin approached.

"That wasn’t there before."

Noctis came closer.

"What book?"

Rin picked it up. The cover was extremely old. There was no title. He opened the first page. Blank. The second. Blank. The third. Nothing. Then the fourth page— words slowly appeared.

Rin froze. Sol looked over.

"What is it?"

Rin read silently. There was only one sentence.

Some doors should remain closed.

Rin’s expression tightened. Noctis looked at him.

"What does it say?"

Rin closed the book.

"Nothing useful."

Rin wasn’t lying. It genuinely wasn’t useful. At least, not yet. Sol frowned.

"You’re hiding something."

Rin looked at him.

"I’m thinking."

Sol accepted the answer. He didn’t know what Rin was thinking. Noctis looked toward the book.

"Where did it come from?"

"I don’t know."

Rin genuinely didn’t know. Noctis frowned.

"That’s not comforting."

"No."

Sol continued examining the library. Then he suddenly stopped.

"Rin."

"What?"

"Come here."

Rin approached. Sol pointed toward the floor. There was a faint golden mark. The same symbol from the ruins. Rin stared.

"The symbol..."

Noctis crouched.

"It’s fresh."

Rin frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The dust hasn’t settled around it."

Sol nodded.

"Someone—or something—left it recently."

Rin looked around. Nobody was there. The fortress was full of people yet somehow something had entered the library without being noticed. Noctis stood.

"We should tell the guards."

Sol nodded.

"I’ll handle it."

Rin stared at the symbol. Something about it bothered him not because it was dangerous. Because it felt like a message but he didn’t know who it was for.

That night, Rin returned to his room. He placed the silver key on the desk. Then sat beside it. He thought about the doorway. His mother’s warning. The symbol. The strange book. The voice.

Everything seemed connected but he still couldn’t see how. Rin opened his notebook.

He wrote:

The doorway appeared before us.

Then:

The symbol appeared inside the fortress.

Then:

Someone or something can move between places without being detected.

He paused. Then added:

Mother’s future visions are being blocked.

He stared at the page. Then wrote:

Don’t assume they’re connected yet.

Rin smiled.

"That’s progress."

A knock came. Rin looked up.

"Come in."

Kaelith entered. He looked at Rin.

"You’re investigating again."

"Not exactly."

Kaelith glanced at the notebook.

"That’s definitely investigating."

Rin laughed.

"Maybe."

Kaelith sat beside him.

"What happened?"

Rin explained what had happened at the eastern barrier and the library. Kaelith listened carefully. When Rin finished, he asked:

"Do you think it’s connected to the doorway?"

Rin thought.

"I don’t know."

The bell did not ring. Kaelith nodded.

"Then we don’t assume."

Rin smiled.

"Exactly."

Kaelith looked at the key.

"Did it react?"

"No."

"Good."

They were quiet. Then Kaelith said:

"You know..."

Rin looked at him.

"What?"

"You don’t have to solve everything alone."

Rin smiled.

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

Kaelith looked satisfied.

"Good."

Rin leaned back.

"Sol and Noctis are helping."

"And me?"

Rin looked at him.

"You too."

Kaelith smiled.

"Good."

Rin smiled back. Outside, Sol was still working. He had returned to the eastern tower. Noctis stood beside him. The barrier crystal remained unstable. Sol adjusted the device.

"There."

The light stabilized. Noctis looked at him.

"Fixed?"

"For now."

"You’re sure?"

Sol nodded.

"Yes."

Sol believed it. Noctis looked toward the forest.

"I don’t like this."

"Neither do I."

"Something crossed the barrier."

"Yes."

"And we don’t know what."

"Correct."

Noctis sighed.

"Wonderful."

Sol smiled faintly.

"At least we’re not bored."

Noctis looked at him.

"That’s your conclusion?"

"Yes."

"You’re impossible."

Sol laughed. Then the crystal flickered. Both men immediately became serious. A small image appeared inside it. A forest. A stone arch. And a doorway. Noctis stared.

"That’s..."

"The northern forest," Sol said.

The image disappeared. Then the crystal returned to normal. Neither spoke for several seconds. Finally Noctis said:

"We should tell Rin."

Sol nodded.

"Tomorrow."

Neither of them noticed the faint shadow at the edge of the tower. It remained there only for a moment. Then disappeared. No attack. No threat. No message. Just someone watching.

Again. And somewhere deep within the forest, the hidden doorway remained closed.

The silver key remained silent. Rin’s forgotten past remained buried. The curse remained unanswered.

The identity of the person he had once chosen remained unknown and the truth about the World remained far beyond his reach.

For now, Rin had something more important to do.

Sleep. He closed his notebook. Looked at the key and smiled faintly.

"Tomorrow."

This time, he wasn’t rushing toward an answer. He was simply waiting for the next piece to reveal itself.
