The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 38: The Name Beneath the Name

  • Next Chapter

His mother was crying.

Rin didn’t know what to do with that.

He had imagined finding her countless times, even if he couldn’t remember when those imagined moments had started.

In some dreams, she was smiling. In others, she was walking away. Sometimes he could hear her voice but never see her face.

And now she was standing in front of him, alive, looking at him as though she had spent an eternity waiting for this exact moment.

Yet she was crying.

Rin slowly stepped closer.

"Mom?"

Seraphine wiped the tears from her cheeks.

"I’m sorry."

Rin frowned.

"For what?"

"For making you wait so long."

He shook his head.

"I don’t remember waiting."

That hurt her more. Her eyes closed.

"That’s what hurts the most."

Rin didn’t understand.

"Why?"

"Because you shouldn’t have forgotten me."

He looked at her quietly.

"You didn’t make me forget, did you?"

Seraphine hesitated.

"No."

"Then who did?"

She looked toward the sky.

"The God."

Rin’s expression hardened.

"But you said the God didn’t create the curse."

"He didn’t."

"Then what did he do?"

"He took advantage of it."

Rin frowned. Seraphine walked toward the house.

"Come inside."

Rin followed. Noctis and Kaelith exchanged a glance before following them. Sol came last.

The door closed behind them. For the first time since arriving in the Moon Forest, Rin felt as though the outside world had disappeared.

No divine presence.

No System warnings.

No armies.

No council.

Just an old wooden house in the middle of an impossible forest.

Seraphine lit several lamps. Warm light filled the room. Rin looked around.

There were little things everywhere.

A wooden cup. A small carved wolf. A stack of old books. A broken music box.

He stopped. The music box. He knew it. Rin reached toward it.

His fingers touched the wooden surface.

A flash appeared. A child laughing. A woman sitting beside him. Music playing softly.

His mother’s voice.

"Again?"

The child laughed.

"Again!"

The memory vanished. Rin pulled his hand away. Seraphine noticed.

"You remember that."

"A little."

She smiled.

"You loved that music box."

"I still do."

"It’s broken."

"I noticed."

Seraphine looked at the box.

"It broke the day you left."

Rin looked at her.

"I left?"

"You didn’t leave willingly."

The room became quiet. Noctis leaned against the wall. Kaelith stood near the window.

Sol sat at the table, watching the System screen hovering in front of him. Rin turned toward his mother.

"You said something before."

"What?"

"That the God took advantage of the curse."

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes."

"Then tell me what happened."

She looked at him.

"You may not like the answer."

"I haven’t liked most of the answers I’ve gotten lately."

That made her smile slightly.

"You’re still my son."

Rin sat down.

"Tell me."

Seraphine took a deep breath.

"You weren’t born here."

Rin waited.

"I know."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You don’t understand."

Her eyes met his.

"You weren’t born as a human."

Silence. Rin stared at her. Noctis straightened. Kaelith’s expression changed. Even Sol stopped moving.

Rin gave a nervous laugh.

"Okay."

Nobody laughed. Rin’s smile faded.

"You’re serious?"

"Yes."

"Then what was I?"

Seraphine looked at him for a long moment.

"A God."

The word seemed to echo through the house.

Rin didn’t speak. He couldn’t. His mind rejected the sentence before it could even become a thought.

A god.

Him?

Rin Lee?

The man who once nearly died because he forgot to eat lunch?

The man who had screamed at a System window? The man who had run from monsters? The man who had been terrified of a demon general?

"A God?"

His voice was barely audible.

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes."

Rin laughed once. It wasn’t because anything was funny.

"I think I need to sit down."

"You already are."

"Then I need to sit down harder."

Sol covered his mouth. Noctis looked away. Even Kaelith’s expression softened slightly.

Rin stared at them.

"Nobody is going to say anything?"

Sol raised one hand.

"I would like to point out that this technically explains several anomalies."

Rin stared.

"Sol."

"Yes?"

"I’m processing the fact that I used to be a God."

"Understood."

"Don’t analyze me."

"Understood."

Rin turned back toward Seraphine.

"What kind of god?"

She hesitated.

"Love."

Rin blinked.

"Love?"

"The God of Love."

Noctis’s eyes lowered. Kaelith looked toward him. Rin noticed.

"What?"

Noctis shook his head.

"Nothing."

"No. You reacted."

"I did."

"Why?"

Noctis looked at him.

"Because it explains something."

"What?"

"Why Heaven was afraid of you."

Rin’s stomach tightened. Seraphine nodded.

"Your power was never simply about romance."

She sat across from him.

"You represented bonds. Choice. The connection between souls."

Rin frowned.

"So... people loving each other?"

"More than that."

She placed her hand over the table.

"Your power allowed souls to choose their own connections regardless of the laws imposed upon them."

Rin slowly understood.

"Regardless of species."

Seraphine nodded.

"Humans could love demons."

"Gods could love mortals."

"Demons could love gods."

Rin looked at Noctis. Something cold moved through his chest.

"And Heaven didn’t like that."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because if souls could choose freely..."

Seraphine’s voice became quieter.

"...then divine laws could not control them completely."

Rin leaned back.

"So I was dangerous."

"You were free."

She corrected him.

"That was what frightened them."

Rin looked down. A strange sensation appeared in his chest.

Not a memory.

Something deeper. A warmth. A pulse. He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he saw light. Not the golden light of the God.

Something softer. Thousands of glowing threads stretched across an endless sky.

Each thread connected two souls. Some were bright. Some were almost invisible. Some crossed between worlds.

And Rin stood among them. He was wearing white. His hair was longer. Light surrounded him.

Someone was standing beside him. A young man with silver eyes.

Eryon.

Rin heard his own voice.

"You can’t force them to love each other."

Eryon laughed.

"I know."

"Then stop interfering."

"I’m helping."

"You’re ruining everything."

"That’s what brothers are for."

The memory disappeared.

Rin opened his eyes. His heart was pounding.

"Eryon."

Seraphine looked at him.

"You saw him."

"I think so."

"What did he say?"

Rin frowned.

"I don’t remember."

Sol’s System appeared.

[MEMORY FRAGMENT DETECTED.]

[ORIGIN: UNKNOWN.]

[SOUL SIGNATURE: HOST.]

Rin stared.

"Can you show me?"

[ACCESS DENIED.]

"Again?"

[Yes.]

"Why?"

Sol looked uncomfortable.

"The memory isn’t locked by the God."

Rin looked at him.

"Then who locked it?"

Sol didn’t answer. Rin’s eyes narrowed.

"Sol."

"I don’t know."

"You’re lying."

The System flickered.

[Emotional conflict detected.]

Sol sighed.

"I don’t know who locked it."

"That’s different."

"Yes."

"Then what do you know?"

Sol looked at the floor.

"The memory was protected before your soul entered this world."

Rin froze.

"Before?"

"Yes."

"So someone protected my memories before I came here."

"That’s what it appears to be."

Rin looked at his mother. She was silent.

"You know."

Seraphine looked away.

"Mom."

She sighed.

"Some of them."

"Who protected my memories?"

"I can’t tell you."

"Why?"

"Because if I tell you now, the God will know exactly what you’re beginning to remember."

Rin frowned.

"He can hear us?"

"Not inside this house."

"Then why?"

"Because the moment you remember the name, he will know."

Rin’s eyes narrowed.

"What name?"

Seraphine didn’t answer. Noctis suddenly looked toward her.

"His divine name."

Rin turned.

"My what?"

Seraphine closed her eyes. Noctis’s expression became serious.

"You had another name."

Rin stared at him.

"What was it?"

Noctis hesitated.

"I don’t know."

Rin blinked.

"You remember millions of lives, but you don’t remember my name?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I never heard the complete name."

Seraphine looked at Noctis.

"That is true."

Rin looked between them.

"Then what did you hear?"

Noctis lowered his eyes.

"Ael..."

Rin frowned.

"Ael?"

"That’s all."

The word felt strangely familiar.

Ael.

He repeated it silently. Something moved inside his mind.

A door. A very old door. Behind it was light. And a voice.

"Ael..."

Rin’s head suddenly hurt. He grabbed the side of his head.

"Rin!"

Seraphine stood immediately. Kaelith moved toward him. Noctis caught his shoulder.

"Don’t force it."

Rin breathed heavily.

"I know that name."

Seraphine froze.

"What?"

"I know it."

She looked frightened.

"Don’t."

"What?"

"Don’t try to remember."

Rin looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because that’s not your complete name."

Rin’s heart raced.

"Then what is it?"

Seraphine shook her head.

"I don’t know."

Noctis stared at her.

"You know more than that."

"I know enough."

Rin looked at both of them.

"What happens if I remember the whole thing?"

Nobody answered. That frightened him more than anything else. Sol finally spoke.

"The System has a theory."

Rin turned.

"What?"

Sol’s expression was unusually serious.

"Your divine name may be connected to your original authority."

"My authority?"

"Your power."

Rin looked at his hands.

"What powers did I have?"

Seraphine smiled sadly.

"You could see bonds between souls."

"Like the threads?"

"Yes."

"You could manipulate them?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"You could strengthen them. Protect them. Sometimes heal them."

"Could I break them?"

Seraphine was quiet.

"Yes."

Rin swallowed.

"Did I?"

"Never willingly."

That answer stayed with him. Never willingly. Meaning there had been a time when he did. Or someone had used his power.

He didn’t ask. Not yet. There were too many questions.

And for the first time, Rin understood that some answers were dangerous.

He looked toward the window.

"Where is Eryon now?"

Seraphine smiled faintly.

"Probably somewhere he shouldn’t be."

"That sounds like him."

"You remember?"

"No."

Rin paused.

"I think I just know."

Seraphine looked at him.

"You always did."

Outside, the silver trees moved.

No wind. Just movement.

Rin walked toward the window.

For a brief second, he saw a figure standing between the trees.

Silver hair.

Silver eyes.

Eryon.

Rin opened the door.

"Eryon!"

The figure disappeared. Rin stepped outside. The forest was empty. He looked around.

"Eryon!"

No answer.

Then something appeared on the snow.

A single white flower. Rin walked toward it.

When he touched it, another memory appeared.

A different world. A sky filled with stars. A massive temple floating above an ocean of clouds.

Rin stood on its edge. He was smiling. Beside him stood Eryon. Not the ancient man Rin had met.

A younger version.

They looked almost the same age. Eryon held out his hand.

"Brothers?"

Rin laughed.

"You’re asking now?"

"I need an official answer."

"Fine."

Rin took his hand.

"Brothers."

The memory shifted. Eryon was standing alone. His face was devastated.

Something was wrong. Someone was gone.

Rin.

The memory shattered before Rin could see what happened. He dropped to his knees.

Kaelith reached him first.

"Rin."

"I’m fine."

"You are not."

"I’m..."

Rin stopped.

A tear had fallen onto the snow. He didn’t know why. He wiped it away.

"Why am I crying?"

Noctis stood behind Kaelith.

"Because some part of you remembers."

Rin looked at him.

"Do you remember him?"

Noctis nodded.

"Eryon?"

"Yes."

"What was he to me?"

Noctis looked at him for a long moment.

"I don’t know."

Rin frowned.

"You’re lying again."

Noctis sighed.

"He was important."

"How?"

"I don’t know."

"You do."

"No."

Noctis shook his head.

"I remember you."

He looked toward the flower.

"But I don’t remember everything that happened before you came here."

Rin stared at him. For once, Noctis looked vulnerable. Not like a demon prince. Not like an immortal.

Just someone carrying memories he didn’t know how to carry. Rin stepped closer.

"Thank you for telling me."

Noctis nodded. They stood silently. Then Kaelith spoke.

"We should go back inside."

Rin looked at him.

"You’re right."

They returned to the house. Seraphine was waiting. She looked at Rin.

"You saw Eryon."

"Yes."

"What did you remember?"

Rin hesitated.

"That we were brothers."

Seraphine smiled.

"I thought you might."

"He promised something."

"What?"

"I don’t know."

She looked toward the fireplace.

"He promised to find you."

Rin’s expression changed.

"After I died?"

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes."

The room fell silent. Rin stared at her.

"Then tell me."

"What?"

"How did I die?"

Seraphine’s face became pale.

"No."

"Mom."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because that is the one memory you cannot have yet."

"Why?"

She looked at him.

"Because your death is connected to why your soul was taken."

Rin froze.

"My soul was taken?"

Seraphine nodded.

"After you died in your original world, your soul should have moved on."

"But it didn’t."

"No."

"The God took it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because he saw what you were."

Rin’s expression hardened.

"And he wanted to control me."

"He tried."

"Did he succeed?"

"No."

Seraphine smiled.

"You were always difficult."

Rin almost laughed.

"Apparently."

"But when he couldn’t control your soul..."

She looked toward the window.

"He forced me to create a vessel."

Rin’s smile vanished.

"A human body."

"Yes."

"For me."

"Yes."

"And that’s why I’m human now."

"Yes."

Rin looked down at his hands.

"Then I’m not really human."

Seraphine walked toward him.

"You are Rin."

He looked up.

"That’s what matters."

She touched his cheek.

"Whatever you were before, whatever you become later, this life belongs to you."

Rin’s eyes softened.

"Mom."

She smiled.

"But there is one thing you must understand."

"What?"

"The God didn’t create you."

Rin frowned.

"No."

"He only tried to claim you."

A strange warmth spread through the room.

The System appeared.

[IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONFIRMED.]

[HOST SOUL: EXTERNAL ORIGIN.]

[CURRENT VESSEL: HUMAN.]

[ORIGINAL DIVINE AUTHORITY: LOCKED.]

Rin stared at the final line.

"Original divine authority."

Sol looked at him.

"Your powers are still inside you."

"Can I use them?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because they’re sealed."

"By the God?"

Sol shook his head.

"No."

Rin’s eyes narrowed.

"Then by who?"

The System flickered.

For several seconds, nothing appeared.

Then:

[ACCESS RESTRICTED.]

Rin sighed.

"Of course."

Seraphine looked toward the ceiling.

"Some secrets are protected for your own sake."

Rin shook his head.

"I’m beginning to hate that sentence."

A small smile appeared on her face.

"I know."

Night settled over the Moon Forest.

Rin eventually went outside alone. The silver trees glowed beneath the moonlight. He looked at his reflection in a frozen pool.

He saw Rin. Brown hair. Tired eyes. A human face.

But somewhere beneath it... there was something else.

A God.

A name.

A life.

A world.

A death.

And a mystery he wasn’t ready to uncover.

Rin whispered:

"Ael..."

The water rippled.

For the briefest moment, his reflection changed.

Silver light surrounded him.

His eyes became brilliant gold.

Behind him appeared enormous wings made of light.

And somewhere beyond the forest...

Eryon opened his eyes.

He felt it.

The first crack in the seal.

He smiled sadly.

"So you’ve remembered the beginning."

He looked toward the distant world.

"But not the end."

Eryon stood.

He touched the old mark on his chest. The mark of two souls bound as brothers.

"Good."

His expression became serious.

"Because if you remember the end too soon..."

He looked toward the heavens.

"...the God will remember why he was afraid of you."

Far above the clouds, something ancient opened its eyes.

The God had heard the name.

Not the complete name.

Only a fragment. But it was enough.

For the first time in centuries, the God looked genuinely afraid.

"Ael..."

He whispered.

Then the divine palace trembled.

Because somewhere in a distant forest...

The God of Love had begun to remember who he was.
