Chapter 103: The Name Beneath the Name

  • Next Chapter

The sky above the vanished castle remained unnaturally still.

No clouds moved, no birds crossed the horizon. Even the wind Sol had summoned seemed reluctant to continue.

Rin stood among the surviving Divine Knights, staring at the place where the castle had disappeared. The pale eye was gone. World was gone.

But the questions remained. Too many of them.

You chose to erase the person you loved most.

Those words wouldn’t leave Rin’s mind. He slowly looked at Kaelith. Kaelith was already looking at him.

Again. Always. Whenever Rin turned around, Kaelith was there.

Watching. Making sure he was still breathing. Still standing. Still himself.

Rin finally sighed.

"You’re doing it again."

Kaelith didn’t pretend not to understand.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I told you."

Kaelith stepped closer.

"I want to make sure you’re here."

Rin frowned.

"You’ve said that before."

"I’ll keep saying it."

"That isn’t normal."

Kaelith’s expression didn’t change.

"I know."

Rin didn’t know whether to laugh or worry. Kaan quietly glanced toward Lucien.

"Is he always like this?"

Lucien watched Kaelith for a moment.

"No."

Kaan raised an eyebrow. Lucien continued.

"He’s worse when Rin is missing."

Rin heard him.

"Excuse me?"

Lucien gave a small smile.

"You should have seen him when we couldn’t find you."

Kaelith’s gaze immediately moved toward Lucien.

"Enough."

Lucien raised both hands.

"I didn’t say anything."

"You were going to."

Kaan looked between them.

"I’m starting to understand."

Sol appeared beside Rin, though his body remained almost transparent.

"Understand what?"

"Why Kaelith is terrifying."

Sol laughed.

"He’s not terrifying."

Kaelith looked at him. Sol paused.

"...Most of the time."

Rin shook his head.

"You’re all impossible."

For a brief moment, the tension disappeared. Then Rin noticed something. Kaan wasn’t smiling.

He was staring at the ground.

"Kaan?"

The former Divine Knight looked up.

"What?"

"You look worried."

Kaan hesitated.

"There was something inside the castle."

"What?"

"I saw it before we escaped."

Lucien’s expression became serious.

"What did you see?"

"A door."

Sol frowned.

"A door?"

Kaan nodded.

"It appeared after the castle started disappearing."

Kaelith’s eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

"Below the prison."

Rin’s heart skipped.

"The prison?"

Kaan nodded.

"There was writing on it."

"What did it say?"

Kaan looked at Rin.

"I couldn’t read all of it."

"But?"

"There was one word I recognized."

Rin waited. Kaan slowly said it.

"Ael."

Rin froze. The name. The same name the pale eyes had used for him before.

Ael.

His fingers became cold.

"Who is this name?"

Kaan shook his head.

"I don’t know."

Kaelith immediately stepped closer.

"What else was written?"

Kaan frowned.

"Something about a first name."

Rin’s eyes widened.

"A first name?"

"Yes."

"Can you remember it?"

"No."

The disappointment was immediate but before Rin could say anything, Lucien spoke.

"I can."

Everyone turned toward him. Lucien looked confused.

"I don’t know why."

He pressed a hand against his forehead.

"But when Kaan said it..."

He closed his eyes.

"...I remembered a voice."

Rin stepped closer.

"What voice?"

Lucien slowly opened his eyes.

"Someone calling a name."

"What name?"

Lucien looked directly at Rin.

Then whispered:

"Ael."

Rin’s heart began pounding. The world around him seemed to blur. A strange sensation moved through his chest.

Not a memory. Not exactly. More like recognition without an image.

Ael.

The name felt familiar. Too familiar. But nothing came.

No face, no place, no past. Nothing.

Rin shook his head.

"I still don’t remember."

Kaelith immediately placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You don’t have to."

Rin looked at him.

"But what if it’s my real name?"

Kaelith’s expression changed.

For a second, something almost possessive appeared in his eyes.

"Your name is Rin."

Rin blinked.

"But—"

"Rin."

His voice was firm.

"You don’t need another name."

Rin stared at him.

"Why does that bother you?"

Kaelith didn’t answer. Sol noticed.

"So it does bother you."

Kaelith ignored him. Kaan looked toward the horizon.

"There’s more."

Everyone turned.

"The door had another inscription."

"What?"

Kaan swallowed.

"It said..."

He hesitated.

"...’The first one sleeps where World cannot reach.’"

Rin’s blood ran cold.

"First one?"

Lucien suddenly whispered:

"Kaelith..."

Everyone looked at him. Lucien shook his head.

"No."

"What?" Rin asked.

"I don’t mean our Kaelith."

Silence. Lucien looked frightened.

"I mean..."

He struggled to remember.

"There was another."

Kaelith’s magic instantly appeared around his hand.

"What do you mean, another?"

"I don’t know."

Lucien stepped backward.

"I only remember chains."

Rin’s eyes widened.

"Chains?"

Lucien nodded.

"Black chains."

"Where?"

"Somewhere between worlds."

Sol became completely silent. Kaelith’s magic grew stronger.

"Explain."

Lucien closed his eyes.

"I see someone."

"Who?"

"I can’t see his face."

A pause.

"But I know he’s suffering."

Rin’s heart tightened.

"It looks like Kaelith."

Kaelith stopped breathing. Rin stared at him.

"Another Kaelith?"

Lucien nodded slowly.

"Chained."

Kaelith’s magic flickered.

"By whom?"

Lucien opened his eyes.

"World...I think...I am not very sure."

The word seemed to echo through the empty landscape. Rin looked at Kaelith.

Kaelith looked completely stunned.

"I don’t know him."

Lucien nodded.

"I know."

"Then why does he look like me?"

"I don’t know."

Sol’s voice became quiet.

"Maybe he’s not another Kaelith."

Everyone looked at him.

"Maybe..."

Sol hesitated.

"...he’s the Kaelith from the timeline that was erased."

Rin’s heart dropped. The pale eyes, the betrayal, the missing memories, the mysterious name.

Everything seemed connected but nothing made sense.

Then Rin heard something.

A whisper. Very faint. Almost impossible to hear.

Ael.

He turned. Nobody had spoken.

"Ael..."

Rin repeated unconsciously. Kaelith immediately grabbed his hand.

"Don’t."

Rin looked at him.

"What?"

"I don’t know."

Kaelith’s voice was tense.

"But don’t say that name again."

"Why?"

"I don’t know."

That answer frightened Rin. Because Kaelith never admitted not knowing.

Not like this.

Then—

A crack appeared in the sky. Not a physical crack. A crack in reality itself.

Through it, Rin saw something impossible.

A dark void. Chains and a figure suspended within them.

The figure raised his head. Rin couldn’t see his face.

But he knew. Somehow—

He knew. The figure was Kaelith.

The chained Kaelith looked directly at him and even across the impossible distance between worlds, Rin heard his voice.

"Don’t let World find your true name."

The crack immediately closed. Nobody moved.

Kaelith was staring at the sky. Rin was staring at Kaelith.

Then Kaelith turned toward him. His expression was no longer calm.

For the first time, Rin saw genuine fear in his eyes. Not fear of World. Not fear of the chained version of himself.

Fear of what Rin’s true name might mean and somewhere beyond the closed crack, something whispered:

"Ael, my love, RUN!."
