Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Don’t Stare- She Is Your Boss!

"Hello, can you hear me?"

"Yes, am listening."

"Okay, I am one of your estate agents. I called to inform you that a tall huge man with two investigators on uniform came to the estate, they took measurements of the fence, the guest house including the main house."

"What!? When?"

"Not quite long ago."

"What was their reason?" Flora asked.

"They said, it was just a normal procedure especially for an estate owned by an individual and not a government property."

"I see, what else did they say?"

"Nothing else, Ma."

"Okay, thanks for reaching out, I will get back to you," she ended the call.

Her hand was shaking, but she quickly hid it.

Simon was standing beside the car, watching her from a distance.

She sat quietly at the balcony with her fresh, smooth, sexy legs crossed, and a cup of tea in one hand and tablet in the other. She looked hot, maintaining straight posture. With total control, as if nothing in the world matters.

Simon truly loves that about her.

Flora carried herself like a woman who knew exactly who she was. She doesn’t seek attention. Her beauty speaks for itself.

He imagined her at twenty-five. She must have broken many hearts. Men fighting for her attention, following her wherever she goes.

Then his thoughts changed. She must have gone through a lot to become this strong? Who knows what marriage has taught her?

He wants to know what makes her happy. What makes her angry. Mostly, he wants to know if she is still capable of loving.

"Are you okay?"

Simon quickly turned. The gardener was standing behind him, holding gardening scissors.

"Yes. I’m fine."

The gardener looked toward the boss direction, then back at Simon.

"You have been standing here for a while."

Simon said nothing.

The gardener lowered his voice.

"And you have been looking at the boss."

"I’m just looking."

The older man gave him a knowing look.

"No. You are looking at her with lust."

Simon frowned. "Lust?"

"Yes. Don’t pretend you don’t understand."

Simon glanced at Flora again. She was still busy with her tablet.

"You will lose this job," gardener said.

"Why?"

"Because you are forgetting who she is."

"She is my boss."

"Exactly. She is a no-nonsense woman. She can sack a person without blinking."

"Do you know how many male drivers she has sacked in the past months?"

Simon shook his head.

"Five. Five male drivers in span of two months."

"Five?"

"One was always late. The other doesn’t drive well. One has a pot belly. Another argued with her. The last one was too friendly."

"What happened to him?"

"He was fired the next morning."

The warning was clear.

"Fired? Just like that?" Simon asked.

"You have not seen anything," gardener scoffed. "Can you even do this driving job?"

"Why are you asking me that?"

"Because you are too relaxed. Are you married?"

"No."

"No wonder! That’s why you are staring at Madam like a fowl that missed its road."

Gardener lowered voice. "You are nice guy. But stay away from women. You are poor, and women like Madam will kick your head. So control yourself. Don’t let your eyes cost you your job."

Simon nodded. "I understand."

"Good. Then stop staring at her."

Simon tried to force himself to look away. But his mind remained with his Boss.

"I have been meaning to ask you, how did you get this job?" the gardener asked.

"I got it through an advertisement company that referred me to an agency," Simon replied.

"I see you are lucky, but you need to avoid staring at her and focus if you want to last long here," he said.

"Okay, I will."

The gardener left and headed to the staff wing.

For a few seconds, Simon was silent. The warning should have frightened him. Instead, it made him think harder.

"The gardener just warned you," he muttered. "You have no right to want her."

"Maybe the gardener thinks my feelings are just a carnal love that grows weary... Or maybe it’s the way people treated me, searching elsewhere when I rejected their needs. But here she is, rising above needs. Saving souls through opportunities...

He paused.

"Flora, instead of distance, I have chosen to be close to you. My queen, I love you this way because I seek your true qualities."

He brought out his phone and glanced through his old photos.

His past experiences at the charity home flashed before him. He could hear the chattering of plates and the long queue waiting in line to be served. He remembers how the children were being transferred to other homes whenever there was overcrowding.

He missed his friends who had become his family.

Back then, the grown-ups would go out to do menial jobs to support the house whenever there was lack.

"Where are they now?" he whispered. "What has become of them? Did life favour them like it favoured me?"

Tears ran down his eyes as he remembered how far he had come.
