The Billionaire Widow's Driver
Chapter 29: The Boot Full Of Luxury.
Chapter 29: Chapter 29: The Boot Full Of Luxury.
The moment Flora approached the boot.
Her eyes widened.
For several seconds, she remained completely silent, trying to understand what she was seeing.
The boot was filled with shopping bags, luxury boxes, beautifully wrapped packages, and gift baskets. Inside the bags includes designers shirts, watches, expensive skincare products, imported chocolate, and numerous other gifts. Some were arranged neatly, while others had moved during the journey.
"Good heavens!" Flora exclaimed with suprise.
She did not expect these kind of luxury items.
"Simon, what is all this?.These gifts worth thousands of pounds, how were you able to afford all these?. You have barely worked for two months ,yet you are spending like a super spender"
He stood beside her, looking uncomfortable.
"Ma,most of them were paid for by a philanthropist I met at the store."
"A philanthropist bought all these items for you,how did you meet the person because whoever paid for all these luxuries is excessively rich"
Flora turned towards him with disbelief written across her face.
She reached for a beautifully packaged candle. Its elegant glass container and carefully designed box immediately caught her attention. When she opened the lid, a rich fragrance filled the air.
"This is an imported candle," she murmured.
"I know how expensive some of these brands can be."
Flora stared at the collection, struggling to hide her astonishment.
As someone who has spent years purchasing luxury for herself. She knew quality when she saw it.
These were not ordinary gifts someone could collect without spending a considerable amount of money.
She carefully examined a wristwatch before returning it to its box.
"Simon, do you have any idea how much these watches cost?"
He shook his head.
Flora picked up a Clive Christian and Roja Dove perfume bottles, examined its label, and placed it beside the chocolates.
"Look at these perfumes. Even the packaging tells me that they are not cheap."
She began checking the shopping bags for receipts and price tags. She found a card inside one of the bags. Then she searched inside the boxes, examined the paper bags, and turned over several packages.
Nothing showed the prices.
Her curiosity slowly turned into suspicion.
"Why are there no prices on these items?" she asked.
Simon remained quiet.
Flora looked at him directly.
"Your monthly salary is four thousand pounds, even if you save up money for one year ,you cannot afford all these or is there something you are not telling me?." Have you been stealing from me?
Simon eyes widened. .
No Ma,i have never stolen a dim in my life before.
She gestured towards the boot.
"Then how did you manage to buy all these expensive things , i don’t believe someone can spend carelessly on a stranger aside from charity ?"
Simon shifted uncomfortably.
"Madam, I have my personal savings."
Flora gave him a questioning look.
"Your savings?"
"Yes, Madam."
She folded her arms, studying him carefully.
"Simon, I know that people can save money, but I also know what luxury costs. If you can afford all these from your savings, why did you settle for a driving job? When you can actually set up a business with your savings. These items cost more than £100,000."
Simon said nothing.
His silence made Flora even more curious.
Their agency sent him as a driver who desperately needed a source of livelihood, she employed him as an ordinary man with responsibilities ,who is eager to work hard and earn a living . But all these expensive collection are forcing her to question everything she thought she knew about him.
"Look at me, Simon."
He raised his eyes.
"Are you hiding something from me?"
"No, Madam."
Flora held his gaze for several seconds.
"Then I hope you understand why I find this difficult to believe."
She turned back towards the boot, her mind racing with unanswered questions.
For now, she decided not to push him further. She needed rest, and have more important responsibilities waiting inside the mansion.
"leave everything inside," she ordered. "Tomorrow, we will talk about these gifts."
"Yes, Madam."
Flora locked the car and walked inside the house with the car key.
She had faced betrayal, grief, and powerful enemies without losing control of herself. Yet Simon’s unexplained luxury purchase had introduced a mystery she could not easily ignore.
As she climbed the stairs, one question remained in her mind.
Can Simon actually be stealing from me? Is he collaborating with an outsider? She needs to find out fast
As Flora disappeared into the main building, everywhere became silent.
Simon stood alone in the compound. There was no sound of cars, no sound of people talking. The lights from the main house shone brightly on the windows, but inside, it looked calm. He knew Flora’s silence is heavier than any scolding.
His heart was beating fast. He slowly turned and walked towards his room at the boys’ quarters. A moderate bungalow behind the main house, meant for the staff. His steps were slow and heavy, as if his legs were carrying a big weight.
When he got to his door, he opened it and entered inside. The room looked neat and well arranged. There is a bed in one corner, a center table and a chair. On the table, the chef had already kept his dinner covered in a tray. Simon could smell the food, but he had no appetite.
He locked the door behind him. He quickly dipped his hand inside his trouser and brought out his phone . His hands were shaking slightly. From his shirt pocket, he brought out a small business card. It was the salesgirl’s card from the luxury store where he had made the purchases.
She had asked him to call her so she could give him a free executive massage, saying that aside from being a sales rep, she is a professional masseuse who offers happy endings.
He looked at the card again. The name and phone number of the salesgirl were printed on it. She was the only person who could help him explain things if Flora decides to investigate.
He sat on the edge of his bed and dialed the number. He put the phone to his ear and waited. The phone rang once, twice, three times. Then it stopped. It did not connect. A recorded voice said the number was not reachable at the moment.
Simon cancelled the call and tried again. The same result. He dialed a third time. Still not connecting.
A cold feeling ran down his spine. His mind started racing with fearful thoughts. He remembered clearly that she gave him two cards. Her personal card and the store’s card. Flora had taken the store’s card from the gift bag.
If she called that number, the operations manager might tell her everything. He might tell her the real price of what he bought. Flora is a smart woman. She would definitely investigate. She would not ignore the mystery of how a driver, who desperately needed a source of livelihood, could afford such an expensive purchase.
He stood up and started pacing around the room. He continued dialing the number, ignoring everything else around him. He was so focused on the phone that he forgot about his dinner.
His dinner is almost cold. The chef served him French fries and roasted salmon fish with sauce for his dinner. The aroma of the fries and the well-seasoned salmon filled the room, but Simon did not even look at it.
His mind was only on the phone call. He tried again. Not connecting. He tried again. Not connecting.
"What if Flora had already called them?" he whispered to himself. His voice was low and full of anxiety. "What if she already knows the truth?"
His fear grew bigger. The agency had sent him here because he needed to be close to her. Flora had employed him out of kindness, trusting him to be honest and simple. Now, because of his luxury purchase, everything he had built could be destroyed.
He sat back on the bed, with his head in his hands. The phone was still in his palm. He looked at the salesgirl’s card again. The card is now slightly squeezed because he has been holding it too tightly.
He knew he had to keep trying. The salesgirl is his only hope to fix the story before Flora finds out. If he could reach her first, he could beg her to support his explanation or connect him to the manager so he could talk to him.
He took a deep breath and dialed the number again. The phone rang. This time it rang longer than before. For a moment, his eyes lit up with hope. He held his breath, waiting for someone to pick up.
But after a long ring, it cut off again. It still did not connect.
Simon looked at his untouched food on the table. He had no strength to eat. The French fries were now cold, and the sauce on the roasted salmon was settling. His stomach is empty, but his mind was too troubled to care about food.
He continued to hold the phone, staring at the card, praying that the next dial would finally connect.
He stared at his watch and saw that it was already 1:23 AM.
