The Billionaire Alpha's Unexpected Mate
Chapter 102: The Progenitor’s Mate
Chapter 102: Chapter 102: The Progenitor’s Mate
"Congratulations, Lord Alexander, for finally discovering her in this generation," spoke the man seated at the absolute center of the High Council table.
The voice cane from Thompson Creed—the most-senior member of the high council. Thompson was an influential figure in both the supernatural world and the human one.
A man of immense political capital who, among humans currently sat on several international policy boards and was quietly laying the groundwork for a presidential run in the human world—carefully maintaining the polished image of a respected statesman while quietly concealing the truth of the blood running through his veins.
He inclined his head toward the dais. His expression was warm, almost reverent, yet his eyes remained sharp, calculating every shift in the room’s dynamic.
Alexander acknowledged the sentiment with a single, measured nod of his head. "Your goodwill is appreciated, Thompson."
Thompson rested his hands flat on the mahogany table before him, leaning forward just a fraction as his tone shifted into something far more deliberate.
"Yet, upon arriving at Blackthorne Estate this evening, rumors reached the council table—whispers that have left many of the regional leaders deeply uneasy." Thompson met Alexander’s blue gaze without flinching. "We are told... that the woman you brought past the gates is human."
Once again, a wave of frantic, hushed murmurs broke out across the chamber. Several Alphas shifted uncomfortably in their seats, exchanging dark, apprehensive glances.
Alexander did not react to the noise. His posture remained fluid, relaxed, and utterly imposing. "What of it?" he asked softly, the two words cutting through the murmurs like a steel blade.
Thompson drew in a slow, careful breath, choosing his words with diplomatic precision. "If she is human, Lord Alexander, it means she is fragile. She is bound by the temporal limitations of mortal flesh. Time is not on her side, nor is physical durability." Thompson paused, his eyes flicking downward before returning to Alexander’s face. "Furthermore, those who witnessed your arrival report that she already bears your mark freshly stamped into her skin."
The quiet in the room turned brittle, suffocating.
"If she bears your mark," Thompson pressed gently, weaving the ancient lore into his delivery, "then according to the oldest manuscripts preserved in our archives, your life force is now irrevocably tethered to hers. Her mortality becomes your vulnerability. A scratch upon her skin echoes through your veins."
The whispers across the assembly rose in volume, turning sharp and agitated.
"And as every leader in this Conclave knows," Thompson continued, gesturing broadly to the room, "every single life bound to your bloodline—every pack, every Alpha, every descendant across this continent—is linked directly to your heart. If your light extinguishes, our strength fades into dust. We are entering a delicate era. The Aegis Council..." Thompson used the formal title of the global hunter organization,
"...continues to monitor supernatural activity with terrifying efficiency. Their motto has never wavered: ’We bleed the shadows to preserve the dawn.’ They hunt any entity they deem an existential threat to humanity."
Several Alphas, their Beta’s and Gamma’s shifted uneasily. For centuries, the Order had hunted supernatural creatures they considered dangerous to humanity.
Their motto had become infamous ; We bleed the shadows to preserve the dawn.
They did not claim to hate every supernatural being. They simply believed that anything capable of becoming a threat to humans had to be controlled or destroyed. And the three Blackthorne brothers had always been at the top of their list.
"They have spent centuries searching for a weapon capable of killing you and your brothers," Thompson said. "So far, they have failed. Until now, you and your brothers were untouchable because they lacked the means to strike at a three-thousand-year-old Lycan. But if they discover that you have claimed a human mate... if they realize that striking her is equivalent to striking you... they will mobilize every asset in their arsenal to bleed her."
Before Alexander could speak, another voice cut across the chamber from the left wing of the council table.
Cecilia Laurent, a councilor whose family controlled vast shipping networks across the Atlantic, leaned into her microphone, her brow furrowed in deep skepticism.
"Is it even biologically possible?" she demanded, her tone sharp and unyielding. "According to the ancient texts of the First Era, an Ultimate Alpha’s true mate must possess a soul capable of carrying the primordial spark. A mortal human girl lacks the constitutional strength to endure a Lycan’s mark. If your judgment has been clouded by a mere fleeting distraction—"
"If you are implying that my instinct has failed me, Cecilia," Alexander interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into a low, terrifying rumble that caused the glass water pitchers on the council table to vibrate, "I assure you... it has not."
Cecilia’s mouth snapped shut. She swallowed hard, her spine stiffening as she leaned back into her chair, unable to hold the blinding intensity of his blue eyes.
Alexander let the silence settle heavy over her before shifting his gaze back to Thompson. A cold, contemptuous smile touched the corner of his lips as he addressed the hunter threat.
"And as for the Aegis Council..." He scoffed softly, the sound carrying a terrifying level of disdain. "The Hunters are not foolish enough to march past the gates of Blackthorne Estate looking for my mate. Have you forgotten why they operate from the shadows today? Have you forgotten why they no longer slaughter whole bloodlines with impunity?"
In the second row of the regional Alpha seating, a broad-shouldered man with a weathered face and dark grey hair stood up. It was Alpha Hendricks—leader of the Moonhowl Pack, the dominant pack in the northern territory and the Alpha to whom Professor Whitmore answered.
"They do not strike openly because two centuries ago, you and your brothers taught them the cost of ambition," Hendricks said, his deep voice echoing through the chamber as he offered a brief head tilt toward Alexander.
"When their high command developed a synthetic silver-toxin and used it to erase the entire Ironwood pack in a single night, you, Lord Lucien, and Lord Damien hunted their grand masters to the edge of the earth. You reduced their strongholds to ash. The truce that followed was forged in their own blood: they hunt only those who break the secrecy laws, and in exchange, they do not provoke the progenitors."
Hendricks looked around the room at his fellow Alphas, his jaw set firm. "The truce exists because the Aegis Council understands human fragility. Humans die by the thousands in a war of attrition. A Lycan king does not."
"Precisely," Alexander murmured, his jaw clenching as his fingers tapped rhythmically against the leather armrest. "Which is why any Hunter who sets foot on my land with a weapon in hand will find only absolute, uncompromising extinction. They will not dare intrude upon my home. Not unless they possess a collective death wish."
"That may hold true while she remains within these walls, Lord Alexander," a smooth, calculating voice called out from the middle tier.
Gerald Montgomery slowly rose from his seat, unbuttoning his tailored suit jacket as he stepped toward the edge of his row. He kept his hands comfortably in his pockets, his posture projecting an air of respectful, yet dangerous, inquiry.
"However," Gerald continued, offering a subtle, polished smile toward the dais, "she will not remain locked inside Blackthorne Estate forever, will she? If my intelligence is correct, Miss Iris Carter is a final-year undergraduate at Emerald Heights University. She has an academic career, human relationships, and a life she has built over twenty-two years. Forcing a mortal girl into total isolation within an ancient fortress is a recipe for resentment."
Gerald paused, letting his words hang in the cool subterranean air before taking a small step forward. "You cannot be at her side every second of the day, my King. What happens when she steps out into the public sphere? What happens when she sits in a lecture hall or walks across a crowded city street? We do not know the full extent of the Aegis Council’s reach within the university administration or the regional government. When she is left exposed... what then?"
Alexander stared down at Gerald, his blue eyes unreadable, glowing with a dangerous, ambient light beneath the harsh spotlights of the Conclave.
"You do not need to concern yourself with the security of my mate, Gerald," Alexander said, his tone dangerously calm. "Her safety is my charge, and I assure you, it is entirely absolute."
Gerald’s smile broadened just a fraction, a spark of dangerous ambition gleaming in his eyes as he delivered his true counter-proposal.
"I do not doubt your strength, Lord Alexander," Gerald said smoothly, addressing both Alexander and the silent, listening chamber. "I merely point out the inherent flaw of her mortality. But three thousand years ago, during the Great Purge, you and your brothers possessed the power to elevate ordinary human blood, gifting it with the strength, speed, and durability of the first werewolf progenitors." Gerald raised his hands in an open, compelling gesture toward the council table.
"If her mortal body is the weakness that threatens this entire bloodline... then surely the solution is simple. Turn her. Gift her with your blood, transform her into a true werewolf, and eliminate her human vulnerability once and for all."
The moment the words left Gerald’s mouth, the chamber descended into absolute, stunned silence.
The council members stared at Gerald in shock, while several regional Alphas leaned forward, their eyes flashing as the radical proposition sank into their minds.
To turn the progenitor’s human mate into a werewolf would alter the very hierarchy of the supernatural world—and Gerald Montgomery had just thrown the match into the powder keg....
