Chapter 721 Atlas Stopped In Front Of His Son

The words hit Lucian like a fist to the chest. His gold eyes dimmed by a fraction so small only Fin saw it, and the dimming was the dimming of a man hearing the one word that had defined his entire identity revoked by the one person whose authority to revoke it was absolute.

WHOOSH.

Pink light rolled outward from River’s body in every direction, washing over both armies, Tristan, and Lucian, spilling across the cliff faces and down the coastal road and into the chest of every wolf and Fae on both sides of the line.

Every soldier felt it. The grief of a woman standing between two men she loved, watching one destroy himself to keep her and the other destroy himself to hold her, and the watching was the punishment and the grief was the currency and the currency was being spent at a rate that emptied her faster than any magic could.

A Fae cavalry rider wiped his eyes without knowing why. A wolf at the front of the line whimpered and pressed his belly to the stone. A mounted officer behind Tristan lowered his visor because his face was doing things his rank didn’t permit.

"Tristan," River tried, voice wrecked. "I left because staying is what hurts you. Every day I was in that palace, every morning you saw me, every time you fought the fated tie, the corruption answered."

"Vesper is a LIAR."

"Vesper was right about that. She was cruel and she was cold and she was right, and the being right is the part that I cannot argue with because the arguing is what produced your seizure. Vesper is a liar who told one truth, and the truth is that I cannot save you by standing next to you. I tried with everything I had, Tristan. I broke my tie with you. I moved out of your chambers. I sat three rows back. I told you to honor her. It still ended with you seizing in my arms because my presence is the inflammation."

"That’s not true."

"Yes it is." She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "Look at yourself. The veins are past your eye. They were at your jaw when I left. You are casting a barrier that is draining reserves your body does not have, and every second of this is feeding the corruption because every second of this is you choosing me over the fated tie and the choosing is the thing that’s eating you alive."

Tristan stared at her. The green in his remaining eye was dimming. The gray was winning. The black was advancing. And the man inside all three colors was looking at the woman he loved with an expression that Fin recognized because Fin had worn it himself in an office that smelled like whiskey and tears.

"I can’t let you go." Tristan’s voice broke. "There is no version of me that knows how to watch you leave and let the leaving happen."

His hands trembled. The green barrier flickered.

The flickering was the first evidence that the barrier’s power source was mortals. The emerald light stuttered, dimmed, recovered, stuttered again, each flicker synchronized with a pulse of black that climbed another millimeter up Tristan’s temple.

Lucian saw it. "This is costing you too much. You going to seize again, Tristan. Please."

River saw it too. Her face went white, the color draining so fast it looked like the sunset was pulling her pigment out through her skin. "Tristan, drop the barrier. DROP IT. The corruption is accelerating, you are going to—"

"Then I’ll die here." His voice was quiet. Wrecked. Carrying the resignation of a man who had run out of arguments and was down to his last position and the last position was the ground he was standing on. "I’ll die on this road with both of you watching, and the dying will be the only honest thing my body has done since the fated tie started lying to it."

"You will NOT die on this road because I will not let you die on this road." River’s voice climbed to a register she had never used in public, a register that existed above composure and above protocol and above every restraint she had built, the raw, uninsulated frequency of a woman whose love had burned through every wall she had spent her life constructing. "You will go home. You will let the healers work. You will honor the fated tie so the darkness recedes. And you will do it because I am ASKING you to, and you have never in your entire life refused me when I asked."

"You’ve never asked me to cut my own heart out before."

"I’m asking you to keep it BEATING."

The silence that followed was so heavy that the coastal wind couldn’t move it, made of two people whose love was a fire that burned in every direction and left nothing standing.

VRUMMM.

A portal tore open behind Tristan. The light that poured through was green and ancient and carrying the atmospheric pressure of a king whose authority superseded everyone present.

Atlas Aelindor stepped through in full armor.

The King of Fae walked through a portal he had torn open from a palace miles away because he had felt his son’s magic from his throne room and the feeling had been enough to make a king put on armor and cross a kingdom in a breath.

His eyes took in the scene in three seconds. The chokepoint. The armies. The green barrier. His son, dark-veined and shaking and glowing with a magic that was draining him faster than the corruption, standing on a coastal road in full armor having a breakdown in front of six hundred soldiers and the two people who loved him most in the world.

Atlas calmly walked. He passed through his own cavalry line, soldiers parting without orders because the parting was instinct and the instinct was older than training. He crossed the gap between the Fae line and his son with the steady, inevitable pace of a man who had been walking toward this moment since the ceremony and had arrived without surprise.

He stopped in front of Tristan.

The prince was shaking. The green barrier was flickering at a rate that matched his pulse, which was too fast, and the pulse was too fast because the heart producing it was being asked to power a body and a barrier and a grief simultaneously, and the heart was running out of capacity for all three.
