The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate
Chapter 695: Rise Of The Dragon Queen
"Your Majesty." Serena dipped her head. "The four riding teams you provided were the absolute best and it showed. Your mages have been healing the cleansed dragons as they landed and showed my mages the techniques used. I could not have done this without your help. Every dragon and man on this field is alive because your forces were here."
The queen received the report the way she received everything. With composure. Without comment. Her blue eyes swept the field once, counting her dragons, confirming her riders, assessing the operational status of her force with the automated thoroughness of a commander whose body performed post-battle inventory the way other bodies performed breathing.
She gave a nod. The nod was acceptance.
Then Serena turned towards the wall to where Shadowclaw warriors and mages stood.
THUMP.
Fists thunderclapped chests from every wolf, every archer, every guard, every officer, and every mage.
Then Beta Griffin Sharpe spoke.
His voice carried the length of the wall and the width of the field and the full, unvarnished conviction of a man whose assessment of this woman had been revised four times in twenty-four hours and whose final revision was permanent.
"To the Queen Luna of Shadowclaw."
The words hit the morning air and the morning air held them.
Gamma Knox picked them up. "To the Queen of Shadowclaw."
"Queen Shadowclaw," Captain Ravenhall echoed.
"LUNA OF SHADOWCLAW."
Serena stood on the field and received it.
Her chin did not drop. Her eyes did not fill. Her composure held the way her composure always held, load-bearing, structural, the architecture of a woman whose walls had been built in a dungeon and reinforced in a throne room and were now holding the weight of two hundred voices calling her by a name she had never expected to earn and had earned anyway.
She hit her chest once. Returning the salute. The way she had seen kings return them.
Behind her, the Queen of Aevamorra Vyracarum watched the wall salute a woman whose kingdom had been under siege twelve hours ago and whose kingdom was now standing with zero casualties and a foreign army on its field.
The queen’s arms crossed. Her expression did not change. But something behind her eyes shifted by a degree, and the degree was the degree of a sovereign whose assessment of another sovereign had moved from respect to something larger. The larger thing did not have a name in the common tongue or Morbian Vellum because both dictionaries had been written by men and the word she needed had only ever belonged to women.
???
Luna Queen of Shadowclaw.
The title was born on a frozen field at dawn, delivered by wolves whose trust had been earned in hours rather than years, ratified by an elder whose objection had been the first to fall and whose confirmation was the last to arrive.
There is a difference between a queen who is crowned and a queen who is forged.
Some queens inherit their thrones. The crown arrives with the bloodline, placed on a head that was measured for it at birth. Those queens rule in chairs built for their name.
Many of the greatest queens in history were given thrones through love. A king chooses them and his kingdom accepts them. The crown is placed on their head by hands that want it there, and the wanting is enough.
On rare occasions in history, queens have conquered for their crown. They take the throne with fire and fury and the kind of ambition that leaves scorch marks on the floor. The crown sits on their head because they ripped it off someone else’s, usually someone who was not fit to lead, and the kingdom bows.
All three types of queens are important. All three have their place in bedtime stories that are read to pups.
And then, there’s a fourth kind of way a queen is crowned. Once in a very long time, she earns it.
The tale of Serena Frostborne is one born from love but ends with merit.
It’s the tale of a girl who was adopted by the Frostborne King as his heir because he saw something in her. It’s the tale of a father who said no to the High Emperor of Orosia, even though he had every reason to say yes, because he had already chosen Serena as his daughter.
It’s the tale of a princess who lost everything, fell to slave, tried and failed to escape twice, and on her third attempt the Dragon Prince happened to be on a run and caught her scent.
It’s the tale of a slave who fell in love with the Dragon Prince, and the Dragon Prince loved the slave back even though she had no wolf and no power she could give him, only for their matebond to shatter, bringing her to the brink of death.
It’s the tale of bravery, of a second king who pledged his armies to be able to save her life, marking her with zero hesitation, a king who lost his first fated mate and was given a second chance, and a king who knew he would be crowning her long before she did.
It is the tale of a girl who rose from slave to queen and was handed two crowns out of love, but earned them both during sieges that were months apart. The girl in the first siege was not the girl in the second. The first siege was a girl earning her seat as a crown princess, next to the prince. The second was a girl earning her place as a queen where the king was absent, her magic was limited, and her bonded dragon was busy.
The girl had not been crowned yet by the King of Shadowclaw, yet his people called her queen because she earned it.
She earned it by staying when she was told to leave. By protecting people who needed protecting. By being afraid and doing it anyway. By crying in corridors and commanding throne rooms and carrying both with the same spine because the spine was the only piece of equipment she had never run out of.
That is how a slave became the queen of the two most powerful kingdoms in Skardos.
And her story isn’t over yet.
