The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate
Chapter 684: A Promise Worth An Army
AEVAMORRA VYRACARUM — THRONE ROOM — DEEP NIGHT
The portal tore open in the center of the throne room and Serena stepped through it wearing a training suit and carrying a bow. Aeron stepped through behind her.
The throne room was empty. Sconces burned low along the walls, casting long shadows across the ice-carved pillars. The city beyond the windows was quiet, the particular quiet of a kingdom at rest, its streets dark, its dragons perched and sleeping along rooftops that glittered with frost under a sky full of stars.
She stood in the center of the room and waited. She did not sit. She did not pace. She stood the way she had stood the first time she entered this chamber, spine straight, bow at her side, composure intact despite the fact that her hands were shaking and her reserves were running low and a fleet of corrupted dragons was bearing down on two kingdoms that belonged to her.
Guards materialized from the shadows within seconds. Four of them. Weapons drawn. Their eyes found the portal, found the woman standing in its wake, and the recognition was immediate. The white hair. The green eyes. The bow. They had been briefed on this one. They lowered their weapons but did not sheathe them.
One guard disappeared through a side corridor. The others held position.
Serena waited. The waiting was three minutes and felt like thirty.
The doors at the far end of the chamber opened.
The King of Aevamorra Vyracarum entered wearing a robe over sleep clothes, his crown absent, his hair unbound. He had been woken from sleep and the waking showed in the lines of his face and showed nowhere else, because a king who had ruled for decades did not allow grogginess to be visible past the threshold of his own bedchamber.
His eyes found Serena. He stopped.
He studied her for two full seconds. The training suit. The bow. The quiver on her back. The hour. The portal. The fact that she was standing in his throne room in the middle of the night with Aeron. He assembled the picture in those two seconds and the picture told him everything the words had not yet delivered.
"Your Majesty." Serena bowed her head. "I owe you an apology for the hour. I would not have come if the need were not urgent."
The king descended the steps from the corridor and crossed the throne room floor. His stride was unhurried. A king who had been woken for war did not rush, because rushing was for men who had not prepared and this man had been preparing since the day her blood hit his flame.
"You do not owe me an apology, Keeper of the Eastern Flame." The title was deliberate. Formal. The title he had given her last time they had met, the title that bound his word to hers across kingdoms and oceans. "You owe me only the truth of what brings you here. Speak it."
Serena met his eyes.
"Drakenfell and Shadowclaw are under siege. A fleet of fifty or more dragons, corrupted with Dark Fae magic, is attacking both kingdoms simultaneously. My mate is defending Drakenfell with every dragon and wolf he has. My other mate is unconscious in Shadowclaw and his castle is exposed. I have arrows that can neutralize the corruption, but I cannot be in two kingdoms at once and I cannot field a dragon force alone."
She paused. One breath. The breath was the only concession she gave to the weight of what she was asking.
"You told me that when the day came, you would answer. I am calling on that oath, Your Majesty. I am asking for your army."
The sentence sat in the throne room the way sentences sit when they carry the weight of kingdoms. The king received it without movement. His eyes held hers with the steady, unhurried assessment of a sovereign who had already made this decision weeks ago and was now confirming that the woman standing in front of him was the woman he had made it for.
"You portaled in the middle of the night," he stated. "Without guard. Without retinue. Without hesitation. Just a single mage."
"My kingdoms are burning, Your Majesty. Hesitation is a luxury I cannot afford."
The king regarded her for a long moment. The moment was not deliberation. The deliberation had happened in an ice chamber when her gold blood hit a sacred flame and his ancestors delivered their judgment. The moment was something else. It was the moment of a king confirming that the faith he had placed was well-placed, and the confirmation was settling into his chest with the quiet satisfaction of a man whose instincts had been vindicated.
"I gave you my word, Keeper. My word does not expire with the sun and it does not require debate by council." He turned to the nearest guard. "Wake the general. Full mobilization. Every combat-ready dragon in Aevamorra Vyracarum is ready on my order. Destination to be provided by the Keeper."
The guard was gone before the sentence finished echoing off the ice walls.
The king turned back to Serena. "You will have your army. You will have my riders. And you will have my best commander."
Serena bowed her head. The bowing was deep, genuine, carrying the full weight of a woman whose kingdoms were in danger and whose call for help had been answered without question.
"Your Majesty, I will not forget this. When your kingdom calls, mine will answer in kind. That is my oath, given freely, without condition."
"I know it is," the king said. "That is why I said yes."
The throne room began to move. Horns sounded in the distance, low and resonant, carrying across the sleeping city with the unmistakable frequency of a kingdom waking for war. The sound bounced off ice walls and crystal towers and the rooftops where dragons were already lifting their heads, already unfurling their wings, already responding to a call that their bones recognized.
Then a door opened at the side of the chamber.
Every head in the room turned.
The Queen of Aevamorra Vyracarum walked through it.
