The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate
Chapter 680: The Queen Who Chose Courage
"What the hell." Dexmon gritted the words through his teeth. His free hand yanked his sleeve up to the elbow.
Next to him, Gavriel was doing the same thing. Identical motion. Identical urgency. Two men pulling back fabric at the same time to look at the same problem on different arms.
Their marks were glowing gold. Both of them. The Hidden Flame marks that connected them to Serena were lit from within, pulsing at a rhythm that matched each other’s perfectly, synchronized across twenty feet of training field like two instruments playing the same note.
Then the marks changed.
An outer ring was carving itself into the skin around each mark in real time. The line burned its way through flesh the way a brand burns through leather, slow, deliberate, precise. The ring formed millimeter by millimeter, the gold searing a new border around the existing mark, expanding it, adding to it, the mark rewriting its own architecture while both men watched it happen on their own bodies.
Dexmon looked at his arm. Looked across the field at Gavriel. Looked at his arm again.
Gavriel’s face was white. He returned the look from across the field, then looked back down at his arm because it hurt like a bitch.
Neither of them had an explanation. Both of them had the same mark doing the same thing at the same time, and the same thing was not something either of them had agreed to.
Tiberon watched both of them without reaction. Then looked up at his Captains.
"Aureus Catenes on every Draken Forces member and warrior. Reminder, mindlink is not private. Zero casualties. That is the standard. Meet it."
"Yes, Alpha."

Bellatrix was already moving.
Not running. Commanding. Her mindlink had gone active before Dexmon’s sleeve was fully rolled up, and the orders were flowing with a speed and precision that would have shocked anyone who remembered the last siege and the queen who had fled during it.
That queen was dead. This one was here.
Bellatrix: All omegas to the lower keep. Baby dragons to the tunnels. NOW. Use the northwest corridor, not the main hall. I want mothers and pups below ground in four minutes. Non-combat staff follow immediately. This is not a drill.
Her voice through the mindlink carried zero hesitation. Zero panic. The cold, clean efficiency of a woman who had been given a second chance at courage and was spending it like she’d been saving for exactly this.
Elara was already outside, sprinting across the dragon field where the juvenile dragons were being herded to shelter. She scooped Avalon off the ground mid-stride without breaking pace, the baby dragon secured against her hip with one arm while her other hand was gesturing commands to the household staff pouring out of the keep’s side entrances.
Her mindlink was running simultaneously. Evacuation grids. Personnel counts. The tunnel system Serena had mapped months ago when Red Death had come knocking and Serena had, in her quiet, systematic way, designed a shelter protocol that nobody thought they’d need twice.
They needed it twice.
Elara hit the field and found Bellatrix already positioned at the east entrance, directing traffic with the authority of a woman who had memorized the evacuation plan and was executing it from memory. Their eyes met.
No hesitation. No residue from the months of tension and side-eyes and the unspoken judgment that had lived between a queen who had run and a woman who never would.
"Your Majesty." Elara’s voice was all business. "I’ll take the west wing and the kitchens. Staff quarters are already clearing."
Bellatrix nodded. One nod. The nod carried respect it wouldn’t have carried three months ago, and Elara received it without comment because there wasn’t time for comments and because the nod was enough and because the woman standing in front of her was not the woman who had fled last time, and acknowledging the difference out loud would have cheapened it.
They split. Two directions. One operation. Running Serena’s protocol like they’d drilled it.
Bellatrix turned to Tiberon as she passed.
"I will get the keep evacuated."
She didn’t wait for permission. Didn’t ask for approval. Didn’t offer a second sentence because a second sentence would have implied the first one was negotiable.
Tiberon watched his wife disappear into the keep with the stride of a queen running toward danger instead of away from it, and whatever he felt about the change, he stored it behind the same expression he wore for everything.
Drakenfell was under siege.
But the enemy had made a miscalculation so catastrophic it almost deserved sympathy. They had attacked a kingdom that had already been attacked. A keep that had already been breached. A people who had already been through the worst night of their lives and had spent every month since preparing for the next one.
The tunnels were mapped. The protocols were drilled. The evacuation routes were memorized. The omegas knew who to follow. The staff knew which corridors to take and which to avoid and where the bottlenecks were and how to clear them.
Serena Drakenfell wasn’t here. But her preparation was. Her planning was. Her quiet, methodical, unglamorous insistence on being ready was woven into every order Bellatrix gave and every corridor Elara cleared and every omega who moved without panic because someone had shown them the route months ago.
Drakenfell had forgotten nothing. And whoever was coming was about to find out what happened when they attacked a kingdom that had already learned how to survive.

SHADOWCLAW KEEP
Hyran’s portal opened in Aeron’s study in Shadowclaw Keep.
No siege. No smoke. No dark magic signatures in the air. The keep was intact, operational, and irritatingly peaceful compared to what he’d just left. Wolves moved through the courtyard with the unhurried cadence of a territory that didn’t know what was happening two hundred miles west.
Good. That meant the attack was targeted. Drakenfell only.
Aeron looked up and assessed Hyran in under a second. "You look terrible."
"Where is the Draken Prime?" Hyran asked.
