The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate
Chapter 675: Onyx Has Reviewed Your Proposal
Onyx did not want to leave.
His small body was planted on Fin’s chest, all four legs locked, tail wrapped around the unconscious king’s forearm. This was his post and his post was non-negotiable.
Aeron reached for him. Onyx’s wings flared. The flare was small because Onyx was small, but the energy behind it was colossal, carrying the full territorial fury of a bonded dragon whose person was unconscious and whose person was therefore vulnerable and whose vulnerability required a guardian and the guardian was him and the guardian was staying.
"Onyx." Aeron’s voice was steady. Patient. The patience was tactical. "He is going to be fine. You cannot stay on his chest for a week."
Onyx chirped. The chirp was loud, indignant, and carried the unmistakable frequency of yes I can, watch me.
"You are going to training."
He shook his head once, eyes saying: training can go to hell.
"Onyx."
The dragon pressed himself flatter against Fin’s chest, his chin tucking between his front paws, his body sinking into the space between his king’s ribs like he was trying to meld with the man through sheer commitment. His gold eyes didn’t blink. The not-blinking was a negotiation tactic he had learned from Fin, and the learning was producing results because Aeron’s jaw was tightening.
Aeron pinched the bridge of his nose.
Then the baby dragon remembered that Queen Bellatrix had mentioned new oil. Moonstone and coconut. And Petra had mentioned lamb today.
The dragon looked at Fin. Looked at Aeron. Looked at Fin again. His expression cycled through guilt, longing, more guilt, and the final resignation of a creature whose loyalty was iron but whose weakness for moonstone oil and lamb was structural.
He uncoiled from Fin’s chest slowly.
Aeron scooped him up. Onyx allowed it with the rigid, offended posture of a creature being carried against his will toward something he secretly wanted.
Then Aeron paused, looking down at Onyx. He sniffed. "Is that coconut?"
Aeron ran a finger across the dragon’s flank. Looked at the residue. Brought it to his nose.
"Why do you smell like a spa."

DRAKENFELL - JUVENILE DRAGON TRAINING FIELD
They landed at the Drakenfell training field fourteen minutes later.
The field was the same as always. Handlers barking. Juvenile dragons running formation drills. Handler Caelum standing at his post looking like a man whose authority had been systematically dismantled by two women and a baby dragon and whose authority was rebuilding itself one morning at a time.
Then Onyx saw the board.
A new training schedule had been posted on the field notice wall. The parchment was fresh. The ink was dark. The handwriting was precise in a way that Onyx had never seen on this board before, each letter formed with the deliberate formality of someone whose penmanship predated the modern alphabet.
JUVENILE DRAGON TRAINING — REVISED SCHEDULE
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
0500 — Formation Assembly
0530 — Altitude Drills (Minimum Ceiling: 400 Meters)
0600 — Fire Control Exercises
0630 — Tactical Descent Patterns
0700 — Discipline Meditation (30 Minutes, No Movement)
0730 — Combat Simulation
0800 — Cool Down and Inspection
Every dragon on the field was staring at it. The staring was collective, silent, and carried the energy of creatures reading their own sentencing documents.
Onyx stared longest.
His gold eyes moved from the 0500 at the top to the inspection at the bottom. Then back to the 0500. Then to the part that said discipline meditation, 30 minutes, no movement. He looked at Aeron.
The exhale that came from his nostrils was long, deliberate, and translated roughly to: we are absolutely not doing that.
✦✦✦
The Dragon King walked the line.
Dexmon’s body moved with a gait that was Dexmon’s and wasn’t. The stride was the same length but the weight distribution had shifted, heavier in the heel, the walk carrying a deliberateness that belonged to someone who had inspected formations before formations had names. His gold eyes burned at a frequency that made every juvenile dragon on the field straighten its spine without being told.
Tiberon walked beside him.
The King of Drakenfell was alarmingly fine with his son being possessed. No one said this out loud. But it had been over a day, almost two, since the original Dragon King had settled into Dexmon’s body like a tenant who had signed a lease without consulting the landlord, and Tiberon had processed this development with the emotional output of someone updating a spreadsheet.
Nobody else found it interesting. Nobody else found it normal. The castle staff had been navigating Possessed Dexmon for forty-eight hours with the careful, wide-eyed diplomacy of people sharing a hallway with a lion who had learned to use doorknobs. Every servant, guard, and handler was operating under the unspoken agreement that if the King of Drakenfell was fine with it, they were fine with it, and the fineness was a performance held together by Tiberon’s composure and absolutely nothing else.
Tiberon’s composure was doing the structural work of an entire therapy department.
The juvenile dragons were lined up in formation across the southern quad. Every one of them standing tall. Wings tucked. Tails still. Chins elevated. The posture was unprecedented. Handler Caelum had been trying to achieve this level of formation discipline for months and had failed, and the failure had been comprehensive, and the dragons had treated his authority the way teenagers treat curfews.
The Dragon King had achieved it by walking onto the field.
He hadn’t spoken. Hadn’t commanded. Hadn’t raised his voice or flared his magic or done anything that qualified as an order. He had walked through the gate and every dragon on the field had snapped to attention with the involuntary, full-body response of creatures whose bones recognized something their brains couldn’t name. He turned and walked back toward the castle, his stride carrying the particular weight of someone who had conquered kingdoms and commanded legions and just lost a battle to a baby dragon in formalwear.
Behind him, Onyx and Avalon sat on the bench in their tuxedos, gleaming, victorious, and deeply unbothered.
