The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate

Chapter 644: Respect Thy Elders

  • Next Chapter

"I’ve got you," Lucian whispered. To nobody. To her. To the matebond that was the cruelest gift any goddess had ever given. "I’ve got you, River. I’m here."

She couldn’t hear him. She would never hear him. The words existed in a corridor and died there, absorbed by stone that was warmer than the distance between them and colder than everything he felt.

Atlas’s voice came through the door again, carrying the full weight of a crown and a father.

"She is a princess because I made her one. The crown I placed on her head carries my authority, my blood, and my name. If this council has a problem with that, I invite the council to remember who built this chamber, who funds this chamber, and who can dissolve this chamber before the sun reaches the western wall."

The door opened.

Atlas walked out with River’s hand in his. The king’s grip was steady, certain, the hold of a man who had once said it is done with the weight of a decree and meant every syllable.

River walked beside him with tears on her face and her father’s hand around hers.

She passed Lucian.

She didn’t see him. Her eyes were down, her composure broken, her magic still radiating grief in waves that hit him at arm’s length with a force that should have dropped a lesser wolf. She walked three feet from the man whose matebond was screaming her name, and the distance between them was three feet and twenty years and an entire life’s worth of silence.

Lucian watched her go.

His gold eyes tracked her down the corridor until she turned the corner, and the matebond stretched between them like a wire pulled taut, and the wire vibrated with every step she took away from him, and the vibration was the specific frequency of a man watching the woman he loved walk into another man’s protection because another man’s protection was the only kind she knew existed.

Fin sat beside him on the corridor floor.

"You’re going to tell her," Fin said. The words came out as a statement, addressed to a man who existed ten thousand years before Fin was born, in a corridor Fin would never stand in, on a floor that had been dust for millennia. "Someday, you’re going to open your goddamn mouth and tell her."

Lucian didn’t hear him. Couldn’t hear him.

But the wolf king’s eyes, tracking the corner where River had disappeared, carried an expression that answered anyway.

Someday was getting closer. And the silence was getting heavier. And the corridor was getting smaller. And the man on the floor was running out of walls to lean against.

Tristan returned to the council without River.

Lucian returned with him. Back row. Arms crossed. Burns still visible on his forearms beneath rolled sleeves. The posture of a guest, the attention of a general.

"I will say this once more." Tristan’s voice had changed. The pleading was gone. The arguments were gone. What remained was a prince who had stopped asking and started informing. "I am taking one wife. She is River. I will never take a second."

"Your Highness—"

"We abandoned the practice of multiple bondings centuries ago. I understand that every elder at this table remembers those centuries personally, but for the rest of us, the practice is dead. Do try to keep pace."

Lucian’s mouth twitched. The twitch was involuntary, the specific response of a man who appreciated devastatingly well-aimed disrespect even when the stakes were too high for humor. Fin caught it and filed it under evidence that the wolf king and the Fae prince were, at their core, two men whose friendship was built on a shared appreciation for saying the worst possible thing at the best possible moment.

Elder Maren’s eyes narrowed. "How dare you imply—"

"That you’re old? That is the word you are looking for, and yes, I am using it. You are old. Your traditions are older. Your suggestion that I take a second wife is the oldest thing in this room, and I include the furniture."

Lucian’s mouth twitched again. This time he disguised it by looking at the floor.

The eldest priestess rose. "It is against the will of the Moon Goddess. The fated bond is a sacred gift. Severing it is an act of defiance against the divine order. I am sorry, Tristan. Deeply. But this council cannot grant what you are asking."

"Then you are sentencing that woman to a life in the dungeons. Where she remains away from me and away from my wife. I will keep her there as long as it takes."

The chamber erupted.

Lucian listened to Tristan redirect the argument in real time. Watched him take the council’s refusal and hand it back to them with consequences attached. You won’t free me? Fine. Then you own what I do next. The technique was Atlas. The fury was Tristan. The combination was devastating.

Fin wanted to clap. Because of course Tristan had already done it. Of course the prince hadn’t waited for permission. Of course he had walked into this council with Vesper already in a cell, the decision already made, the argument already won before it started.

"Her pain will darken your soul," Elder Vareth warned.

"Then I will sentence her to die."

Zero pause. Zero negotiation.

The silence had a temperature. The particular cold of ancient Fae hearing a prince announce his willingness to execute his fated tie.

"You would sentence her to die? The woman you are fated to. A gift from the Moon Goddess. Your perfect match, body and soul." The priestess’s voice was quiet. Horrified.

"Yes."

Lucian’s gold eyes moved to the priestess. Then to Tristan. Then back.

Fin felt the calculation happening behind those eyes. The wolf king was measuring Tristan’s willingness against his own, running the math on a soul whose formulas he knew by heart, and the answer he arrived at was the same one Fin had arrived at: Tristan meant it. Every syllable. Every consequence. Every ounce.

And if Tristan could mean it about Vesper Willow, then Lucian could mean it about keeping his matebond to himself to protect the people he loved.
