The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate
Chapter 642: She’s His Wife. She’s Also His Death.
The veins spread.
Fin watched Lucian watch Tristan deteriorate with the focused, helpless attention of a man monitoring a collapse he could see and could not stop.
The dark lines climbed from Tristan’s neck to his jaw. From his jaw toward his cheekbone. The spread was progressive, systematic, following the vascular architecture of his body with the patient, methodical certainty of a poison that understood it had time and intended to use all of it.
Tristan wore high collars. The collars got higher every hour. The progression was its own timeline, a sartorial countdown that tracked the corruption’s advance more accurately than any healer’s chart: when the collar reached his jaw, the corruption had reached his face. When the corruption reached his face, the collar couldn’t help anymore.
Lucian studied the progression from across every room they shared. Dining halls. Council chambers. Training yards. He tracked the darkening at the edges, the branching patterns, the rate of spread, building a dataset in his head with the same systematic thoroughness he’d applied to every problem since he was eight years old and defeating Fae wards to steal honey pastries.
The dataset was producing conclusions he hated.
"You look like hell," Lucian said. The delivery was careful, calibrated, aimed at the specific register between concern and casualness that would allow Tristan to acknowledge the observation without acknowledging the severity.
"I look incredible. I always look incredible."
"You look like a man whose veins are staging a coup."
"It’s a fashion statement."
"Your fashion statement is going to kill you, Tristan."
The green eyes met his. What was left of the green, anyway. The color was dimming. Fading at the edges the way paint fades in sunlight, the emerald being replaced by something flatter, duller, the visual evidence of a man whose magic was being consumed by the same corruption that was consuming his body.
"The healers are working on it."
"The healers are not working on it. The healers are documenting it. Documenting and working are different verbs."
"Since when do you critique verbs?"
"Since your verbs started determining whether you survive."
Tristan’s jaw tightened. The tightening pulled the dark veins into sharper relief against his skin, the contrast between the corruption and his complexion making the corruption look like calligraphy written by a hand whose penmanship was cruelty.
"The tie requires proximity to the bonded partner to stabilize. Vesper is—"
"Vesper is in your dungeon."
"Vesper is in a holding cell with full amenities and three meals a day."
"Vesper is in a cell, and you are dying. The math is straightforward, Tristan. You do not need me to do the math for you."
"I need you to stop doing the math." Tristan’s voice carried an edge that Lucian recognized, the edge of a man whose patience was being tested by a truth he couldn’t handle and a brother who was delivering it without the padding that other people used to make truths survivable. "The math leads to a conclusion I am rejecting."
"The conclusion you are rejecting is rejecting you back. That is literally what the veins are."
Tristan looked at him for a long moment. The looking carried the full, exhausted weight of a man who was trapped between the woman he loved and the woman his biology demanded, and whose biology was making its case with dark lines that were climbing his face.
"I will not bond with her, Lucian. I will not touch her. I will not give her what the tie is asking for. River is my wife. River is the woman I chose. The choosing is final."
"The choosing is killing you."
"Then it is an expensive choice. I have made expensive choices before."
"You have never made one this expensive."
"I made one that was close." Tristan’s mouth curved. "I once stole a crown and let you take the blame."
"That cost me a week of restriction."
"And I was deeply, profoundly sorry about it."
"You were deeply, profoundly laughing about it."
The exchange landed in the space between them the way their exchanges had always landed, warm, familiar, carrying the rhythm of two men whose shorthand had been built over decades and whose decades were threatening to run out. Lucian’s gold eyes held Tristan’s dimming green, and the holding was the holding of a man who understood that this conversation was achieving nothing and whose nothing was the only thing he could offer because the something required a truth he would never speak.
The truth: I can feel your wife’s grief through a matebond she doesn’t know exists. I can feel her crying at night while you fight a corruption you wouldn’t have if she weren’t in the palace. I can feel the woman we both love being destroyed by a geometry that I cannot solve without destroying you, and the inability to solve it is eating me alive at a rate that is competitive with the rate your veins are eating you.
He held the truth behind his teeth. The way he held everything. The way he always had.

THE COUNCIL — BEHIND THE DOOR
Fin watched Lucian arrive twenty minutes early.
The wolf king was about to be excluded from this room. So he was testing his wolf hearing, already confirming that the oak door reduced sound by approximately sixty percent and that sixty percent was insufficient to defeat ears designed for hunting prey across open terrain.
He found his position. A section of wall between two pillars, shadowed, six feet from the door. Close enough to hear. Far enough that a passing servant wouldn’t question a king leaning against a wall in a corridor that connected to four other corridors and could be justified as a thoroughfare.
The elders arrived. Twelve of them. Fin recognized the type from every council he’d ever sat in: men whose age had been converted into authority and whose authority was being applied to a problem they understood academically and experienced personally at a rate of exactly zero.
He watched Lucian listen.
The listening was total. His gold eyes were fixed on the floor, his posture was relaxed, his breathing was controlled. Every visible piece of him said a man waiting for a meeting that has nothing to do with him.
"The corruption has reached the third stage. The healers confirm that without proximity to the fated partner, the progression will continue to accelerate."
