Chapter 606: The Son He Never Met

"It was my decision."

"It was the wrong decision."

"It was the only one I was ever going to make." His hand slid into her hair. The white strands caught on his fingers, tangling, and the sensation of it pulled a sound from his chest that was quiet and wrecked and reverent. "I would choose it again. In every life. In every body. In every version of this conversation you wish to have with me, the answer remains unchanged."

"You are infuriating."

"I have been told. Often. Primarily by you."

A sound left her that she didn’t recognize. Something between a laugh and a sob, wet and ugly and human, a noise that belonged to a woman whose grief and her love for this man occupied the same room and kept crashing into each other.

"Natalia." His hand cupped her jaw. Tilted her face up. Gold eyes met green, and the gold was so bright it turned the shadows on the ceiling into daylight. "Hear me. There was never anything to forgive."

She heard the words land in her own soul like a key turning in a lock she’d been carrying since birth.

"You broke the matebond because I begged you. You saved our child because I begged you. Everything you did in that temple was precisely what I asked of you, and I would ask again, and the only regret I carry across ten thousand years is that I could not remain long enough to watch you do it."

Serena felt the lock open.

She felt something release inside her that she’d been gripping so tightly she’d forgotten she was holding it. The grief didn’t vanish. It shifted. It moved from the place where it had been crushing her into a place where it could breathe, and the breathing was the first full breath that piece of her soul had taken in any lifetime she’d ever lived.

She heard herself whisper the next words with the specific, trembling precision of a woman delivering testimony she’d been rehearsing for millennia.

"We had a son, Ronan."

His jaw trembled. Serena watched it happen on Fin’s face and felt it through the matebond and the combination was devastating because Finnick Shadowclaw’s jaw did the same thing when he was breaking and the sameness was the cruelest confirmation that these were the same souls wearing different suits and the suits changed and the grief never did.

"I know." His voice cracked on the word. "I know we did."

"He bore your likeness." Her hands framed his face, thumbs pressing into his cheekbones, holding him the way you hold something precious that you lost once and found again and refuse to release twice. "Your jaw. Your eyes. Your stubbornness. Every time he set his chin and declared himself well when he was bleeding, I saw you. Every time, Ronan. For the rest of my life, I saw you in his face."

A tear slid from his gold eye and traced a path down the face of Finnick Shadowclaw, and the tear belonged to a man who had been dead for ten thousand years and was crying for the first time since.

Serena felt it fall. She felt the warmth of it against her thumb where it crossed his cheekbone, and her own eyes burned because the matebond was delivering his grief into her chest in real time, raw and unfiltered, the grief of a father who died before his son drew breath and was hearing what the boy looked like from a woman who had memorized every detail for exactly this conversation.

"Asher raised him." His voice was raw. Each word costing him something he’d never get back. "He raised our son as his own."

"He did." She heard her own voice soften into something that carried both love and loss in equal measure. "He loved that boy the way he loved you. The way he loved me. He never once called him anything other than his son, and our boy never once questioned it. Asher gave him everything. His name. His crown. His protection. He was a good father, Ronan. He was the father you chose for him."

"I did choose him."

"I know you did."

Silence held them. The kind of silence that only exists between two people who have said the impossible things and are resting in the aftermath.

His thumb moved across her cheekbone. Slow. Memorizing.

"I should have told you sooner." His voice dropped into a register that lived beneath formality, beneath composure, beneath every wall he’d built across every life. "I knew at the second I laid eyes on you. I knew the moment your scent reached me. My wolf screamed your name and I held it because you were his, and he was my brother, and I would have swallowed ground glass before I stole his happiness."

He wiped Serena’s eyes.

"I held that for months and I was prepared to for years if the alternative was causing him pain. But I want you to understand." His forehead dropped against hers. "The holding was the hardest thing I have ever done. Harder than the temple. Harder than the field. Harder than dying on a gate I held so he could reach you. Loving you in silence was the most expensive thing I ever purchased, and I never once regretted the cost."

The words carved through Serena’s soul like a blade through water, clean and deep and leaving no wound because the wound had always been there. She was crying. Tears that belonged to Natalia and to her and to every version of this woman who had loved a man whose silence was the loudest devotion anyone had ever heard.

She heard herself say it. Five words that carried the weight of temples and gates and a boy with his father’s jaw.

"I love you, Ronan. Always."

His gold eyes closed. His breath left him in a long, shaking exhale, the kind that a body releases when it has been holding itself rigid for ten thousand years and has finally, finally been given permission to stop.

"Always, Natalia. In every life. In every name. In every body the gods see fit to place us in." He opened his eyes. "I have loved you since a courtyard and a war. I loved you on a balcony where my brother gave you to me and I swore I would earn what he entrusted me with. I loved you on a gate where I died, and the last thought in my skull was your name, and the name was so deep in my bones that death could not sand it out and rebirth could not overwrite it."
