The Alpha's Forbidden Bite
Chapter 57: The War Begins
They went in at dusk.
The light was going amber and thin at the western edges of the sky when the joint force crossed the boundary markers and entered the Dead Corridor. One hundred and fourteen wolves and thirty six vampire clan fighters moving into a four kilometer stretch of sealed, supernaturally charged forest toward sixty to eighty Hollow operatives who had been preparing for this specific confrontation for three years.
The numbers were not comfortable. Axel had done the math enough times to have stopped finding new interpretations of it. What they had in their favor was coordination, information, and the particular fighting quality of people defending something real against people fighting for an ideology. Ideology was powerful. It was also abstract. And abstract things, when the contact became physical, sometimes found they had less structure than they had appeared to from a distance.
He had been counting on that.
The corridor received them the way it always received wolves with the pressure change, the sound shift, the particular atmospheric quality of a contained space reasserting its containment. Around him he could feel his pack adjusting to it, the experienced fighters absorbing it and moving through it without breaking stride, the younger wolves requiring an extra moment of recalibration that they covered well.
The clan fighters moved differently through the corridor. For them the pressure was absent, they simply entered the old forest and moved through it with the ease of things that belonged to the dark rather than moving through it from outside. Axel watched the two groups find their respective rhythms and begin to align around the joint formation they had planned, and felt the particular satisfaction of preparation meeting execution cleanly.
Reyna moved at his left shoulder.
He was aware of her in the specific way he was always aware of her the pre bond warmth at his wrist steady and constant, a living compass oriented in her direction. In the corridor’s dark it was more pronounced. Something about the boundary stones’ field interacting with the pre bond’s frequency, amplifying the signal between them. He had expected it based on what Malka’s records described. He hadn’t expected how grounding it would feel in the specific anxiety of moving into contested space.
"Two hundred meters," she said quietly. She was reading the corridor with her senses the vampire’s particular awareness of other vampires, the directional intelligence of someone who could feel the Hollow’s presence the way he could feel his pack’s. "They’re ahead and flanking. Classic enclosure formation."
"They want us in the center," he said.
"Yes. The ritual site is at the hollow ground. They’ll try to drive us toward it."
"Then we don’t go toward it." He signaled Petra on his right hand signal, no radio, radio discipline in the corridor was essential. Petra passed it down the right flank. "We split at the first contact point. Push their left flank hard, fold their enclosure before it closes. Drive them toward their own center."
"Their center is the ritual site."
"Their ritual site is in the middle of a sealed corridor surrounded by boundary stones." He looked at her briefly. "Let’s make them use it."
She understood what he meant. He saw her understand it the rapid processing, the recognition of the strategic shape. If the Hollow was forced to activate their ritual setup prematurely, without the conditions they needed, without Reyna’s blood the stones would react to the activation. A ritual structure incomplete and under pressure would destabilize in the contained field.
Not what the Hollow planned. But possibly what the corridor had always been designed to produce when the truce was violated inside it.
The first contact came at the two hundred meter mark.
It came fast the Hollow’s fighters moving out of the dark with the speed that experienced vampires moved, which was the kind of speed that ordinary wolves didn’t have natural responses for. The younger members of the force registered the shock of it, that first moment when the thing you had been told was fast turned out to be faster than the telling.
They held.
Axel hit the contact point at full force and the wolves behind him followed with the trained, cohesive violence of a pack that had been running this territory for three centuries and fought like it. On the right flank Petra drove hard into the enclosure’s edge. On the left the clan fighters moved with the particular lethal efficiency of vampires fighting other vampires no adjustment period, no recalibration, just the immediate and devastating fluency of people who knew exactly what they were dealing with.
The corridor filled with sound the specific sounds of real fighting, nothing cinematic about it. Brutal and close and decided in fractions of seconds by things like footing and reach and the particular quality of trained response under pressure.
Reyna fought at his left shoulder.
He had seen her move in the pre-dawn engagement and thought he understood what she was. He had not fully understood. In the corridor, with the boundary stones’ field amplifying everything, with the Blood Apex power running at full presence she was something that didn’t have a clean category in his experience. Not a vampire in the way the Hollow’s fighters were vampires. Something more fundamental than that. Something that the old forest recognized and adjusted around, giving her traction in the dark that even the other clan fighters didn’t have.
She was extraordinary.
He filed that in the same place he filed everything about her and kept moving.
The Hollow’s enclosure began to fracture at the left flank the clan fighters driving a wedge into the formation that the right flank’s pressure amplified. Axel felt the shift before it became visible, felt it the way an Alpha felt his territory’s condition through the soles of his feet. The Hollow’s tactical structure was collapsing.
They were pushing toward the hollow ground.
Good.
He signaled the advance.
The joint force moved deeper into the corridor, toward the sealed center where the artifacts waited and the ritual structure was incomplete and the boundary stones stood in their ancient positions waiting for the thing they had been built to do.
The war had begun.
And for the first time since the Hollow’s first marker had appeared in the Dead Corridor eight months ago, Axel Bessario felt something that was not quite certainty but was adjacent to it.
They were going to end this.
Tonight.
