The Alpha Twins' Lottery Mate
Chapter 76: Before The Directives [V]
The heads of the five great clans were dominant sovereigns by nature, each ruling their own territory with an authority that had earned them the title of King or Queen. Four were Kings, one was a Queen, and all five were absolute monarchs over their respective domains. They rarely gathered in the same place unless summoned by imperial decree or faced with an existential threat, so whenever you saw them together, you knew trouble was brewing and something was bound to go wrong. There was bound to be a deadly clash of egos whenever they were forced into the same room for too long. Too much power in one room was a dangerous thing, especially when none of them was willing to bow to another.
For that reason, the seats reserved for the four Kings and one Queen in the Imperial Grand Hall were strategically spaced, placed far enough apart to prevent any accidental confrontations. It kept unnecessary clashes to a minimum and allowed each ruler to maintain their dignity and authority without stepping on the others’ toes when having an audience with the Emperor.
A message had been sent out, informing the Emperor of their presence. However, they had yet to receive a response or catch even a glimpse of the Empire’s Sovereign. Knowing Emperor Alexander, he would take his sweet time to appear, especially whenever they sought an audience without being summoned first.
And so, the wait had begun to drag on.
It was not surprising that King Cassian Hawthorne of the Perigee Clan, and Beatrice’s father, was the first to grow impatient. He bounced his foot impatiently against the polished floor, his jaw tightening as his gaze remained fixed on the entrance, as though he could summon the Emperor through sheer irritation. The man was never known for his patience. He was short-tempered and blunt to a fault, a trait he had passed down to his daughter, who now embodied the image of a spoiled, presumptuous princess who had grown accustomed to getting her way.
But Beatrice Hawthorne looked nothing like her father, at least physically. Where she was a brunette with soft brown eyes and delicate features, Cassian had ebony-black hair and piercing steel-gray eyes so cold and intense that they seemed capable of cutting through a man with a single glance. His features were sharp and severe, exuding an intimidating authority that could make even seasoned soldiers instinctively straighten their backs.
Like all the other Kings, Cassian was tall and powerfully built, his broad shoulders and imposing frame reflecting the military strength of the Perigee Clan. His attire was equally disciplined, consisting of a perfectly tailored black military uniform adorned with subtle silver insignia. Nothing about him was excessive or ornamental. Every detail was precise, functional, and authoritative. The King of Perigee was the epitome of unyielding discipline, a man forged by war, strict order, and an unwavering sense of duty to his clan, a reputation that had made the Perigee Clan one of the most formidable military powers in the empire. He occupied the first seat on the left side of the hall, his posture as rigid as the grand throne before him.
Across from him sat Augustus Everhart, the King of the Apogee Clan and Kage’s father.
While Cassian was all rigid severity, Augustus was refined, deceptive calm. There was no denying he had generously bestowed his appearance upon his son. The two could have easily passed for identical twins if not for the fact that Kage preferred to wear his hair long, while his father kept his cut short and impeccably groomed. And just like his son, Augustus possessed that naturally sharp, aristocratic handsomeness that seemed capable of turning heads without effort.
Further down on the left side sat Cyrus Sterling, the King of Solstice and Okami’s father, observing the room with the detached focus of a scholar examining a fascinating experiment. His pale eyes moved quietly from one ruler to another, taking in every expression, every gesture, and every shift in mood with unsettling attentiveness.
Okami took almost nothing from his father. You wouldn’t even know they were related unless someone told you. Where Okami had sun-kissed skin and messy dark curls, his father had pale, almost sickly skin and bone-straight soft brown hair that fell neatly around his face, giving him the appearance of a man who spent far more time among books and research papers than out in the sun. Cyrus had the austere, clinical demeanor of a man who lived in research labs, while Okami carried the reckless charisma of a shameless playboy.
It was said that Okami had been adopted after the King and Queen of Solstice exhausted every possible avenue in their attempts to have a child of their own. When all hope seemed lost, they had decided to adopt a child from one of their distant relatives. However, rumors persisted that Cyrus had actually fathered the child after a scandalous affair with one of his cousins. Nobody could prove it, and nobody was lazy enough to spend their time digging into another family’s private affairs just to find out whether the rumor was true or not.
Directly across from him on the right side sat Sabrina Selena, the Queen of the Umbra Clan and Sera’s mother. She rested comfortably in her designated seat, her eyes closed in serene composure. Sabrina was a breathtakingly graceful woman, and the flowing white robes draped elegantly around her only added to her already peaceful presence. Unlike the other Clan Heads, who often preferred to appear intimidating, authoritative, or openly formidable, Sabrina seemed almost gentle at first glance. But appearances were deceiving. She was just as dangerous as the rest of them, perhaps even more frightening when truly provoked.
And seated closest to the elevated imperial dais was Evander Wolfhart, King of the Eclipse Clan, father of Eden Wolfhart, and younger brother to the Emperor himself. Positioned directly against the base of the raised platform, his chair faced the grand entrance, allowing him to look straight down the center of the hall and keep every ruler within his field of vision.
The only thing he truly shared with his son was their blond hair. In every other respect, Evander looked far more like a blond version of Emperor Alexander, built with the same towering frame and sharp, lethal features, only rendered in gold.
Glancing down at the luxurious watch wrapped around his wrist, Evander frowned slightly. What exactly was keeping his imperial brother? It had already been an hour since their arrival had been announced. The last thing he wanted was to remain trapped in this room long enough for the tempers of the empire’s hot-blooded rulers to finally ignite.
The heavy silence in the Grand Hall was finally broken as a herald’s voice rang out, announcing the Emperor’s arrival.
"His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Alexander Wolfhart!"
The announcement echoed beneath the vaulted ceiling. A collective, quiet exhale rippled through the room. The Kings released a near-unified breath of relief, their patience having finally reached its limit. The suffocating tension that had been steadily building over the past hour immediately shifted. Sabrina slowly opened her pale blue eyes, her serene composure giving way to sharp awareness as the massive double doors swung inward in unison.
Emperor Alexander entered without haste, his presence immediately commanding the room.
The five Clan Heads rose to their feet as one, setting aside their individual authority out of respect for the imperial throne. Alexander barely acknowledged them as he strode down the broad central aisle toward the elevated dais.
Dressed in formal imperial attire, a fitted white coat embroidered with intricate gold thread, the imperial crest gleaming across his chest. Gold epaulettes rested upon his broad shoulders, while a crimson cape trimmed with white sable fur flowed behind him with every step. He moved with the effortless confidence of a man who ruled an entire empire and knew it. Every step was measured. Every movement deliberate. There was not a trace of hesitation in him, only the quiet certainty of absolute power.
As he reached the foot of the elevated dais, he casually shot a wink at his brother, Evander, who nearly choked on his spit. It took everything within his considerable self control to maintain a straight face and preserve what remained of his dignity in front of the other leaders.
Completely unbothered by his brother’s suffering, Alexander ascended the dais and lowered himself onto the imperial throne, resting one arm casually over its side. Only then did he lift his gaze toward them and give a curt nod.
The Clan Heads resumed their seats, settling back into their designated positions as their full attention shifted toward the Emperor seated above them. Alexander leaned forward, resting his chin against his palm as his silver eyes swept across the room."So, to what do I owe this unexpected gathering?" he asked, his voice carrying a dangerous, quiet edge. "I was in the middle of a rather important mission with my wife, the Empress, when your message arrived."
His expression remained perfectly calm.
"To say I am displeased by the timing would be a generous understatement."
