Chapter 93
KAI’s POV
It was midnight when I went to see Alex in our room. My breathtaking Luna was asleep, curled up on his side. A headlamp was strapped to his head, its band having latched deep into his strands, and I wondered how that hadn’t discomforted him.
A chuckle escaped me.
I sat on the edge of the bed, content to simply watch.
Alex was the most beautiful Omega I’d ever seen. Blessed with such perfect sculpting, he looked unbelievable. From his height to the shape of his body and the warmth of his beige skin, everything about him captivated me. The light spilling over his shut eyes caught against lashes that were almost unfairly thick, as though he’d brushed them before falling asleep.
His skin glistened beneath the influence of stars and shadows. Not even the darkness could steal his spotlight. I gave him another once over, unable to stop myself.
His fingers stretched out before him, one palm resting flat against the bed while the other lay beneath the pillow supporting his head. He’d never bothered with manicures, at least not any that I’d noticed, yet somehow he’d been brought to perfection.
I’d always loved him for that.
He was confident in his natural state, so much so that he’d become an unconscious naturalist. Grounded to the earth, he wasn’t much for technology. Alex loved nature, the land itself and its tapestry of art.
It was his home.
His breathing was slow and steady. The rise and fall of his chest settled something restless inside me, and for a fleeting moment I wished the world would simply leave us alone.
That we didn’t need to argue about how to protect each other, because the world simply didn’t care about us. But unfortunately, it seemed we’re in the middle of the chaos it wrought.
I hadn’t even realized how much I was grinning from merely watching him sleep until I carefully removed the headlamp from around his forehead and settled it onto the neighboring cabinet. I was careful in my movement so as not wake him by making any sound.
And that’s when I notice... "Oh, for fuck’s sake." I mouthed.
Of course, my dick was hard as hell too.
My trousers had tightened so much that one would think they’d burst at the zipper trying to escape. Alex managed that without even trying.
I craved to plant a kiss, maybe even a peck, upon his heart shaped lips, ripe and soft in the quiet of the night, but I refrained. I didn’t want him waking up or lose control where my scent would linger in the room and stirred a response from him.
Even the slightest shift would be enough to ruin the peace he’d found. He needed his sleep and the strength to fight me before he left with Clawface tomorrow morning.
That thought made me chuckle inwardly, mentally preparing myself for Alex’s fury.
I doubted he knew just how funny, yet insanely frightening, he looked whenever he was furious.
My little warrior.
My own Mage-Wolf.
I took one last long look at him before leaving the room.
Once I entered the hallway, its muteness matching my predatory steps—no one made as I strode past—I picked up a cape on my way out, its flared ends flapping as they caught the wind. Soon enough, the darkness swallowed me, and I dispersed into the shadows like air itself, present but unseen.
Once I reached the forest, my calves shifted, the bone structure snapping beneath my skin. I merely grunted as my wolf came to the surface, a thin filament keeping him from completely claiming my human form.
As my feet hardened, I landed on all fours. My palms restructured as well, and my nails lengthened into claws.
Then I sped into the forest.
I moved with fierce precision, my body making almost no sound.
Only the whipping of the air followed as I lashed inhumanly past. Broken branches blurred beneath me while the grasses split under the intensity of my pace. The scent of damp earth and pine filled my lungs, and somewhere in the distance, startled creatures fled my approach.
Then, within the shadows, I halted.
In the middle of the forest, I waited.
The fog settled thicker around this place. The cold was biting, but the fur lacing my skin kept me warm. My awareness of winter’s approach had become even keener.
The snapping of a twig caught my attention. I jerked my head to the right where a figure emerged.
"I didn’t think you’d come," I said, flicking a strand of hair to the back.
A second later, I started forward, my steps matching his predatory ones.
Both of us carried similar auras. Similar energies if one will.
"And I didn’t think you’d call," he replied.
The air itself seemed to freeze. I could have sworn the trees had swayed beneath the influence of the wind moments before the arrival of his wolf.
He too stood in a half-man, half-wolf form.
"I need your help."
"I figured. But why should I help you?"
My fingers curled, claws pricking the skin of my palms, though not enough to draw blood.
"It concerns the Aetherblood," I said, my head tilting to one side. "I know your Pack keeps special records. Ancient documents concerning the Aetherblood. You must know what I mean when I say one can either become a Peace Bearer Aetherblood... or a Death Bringer Aetherblood."
Something flickered in his stance.
I caught it, and so I decided to use that to my will.
Frederick took another step forward. Finally, he brought himself into the light where I could properly study his expression. Though bland and deadpan, I knew I’d caught his interest.
That much, he couldn’t hide.
"So...?" he pressed.
"So, I have a question that needs a straightforward answer."
He narrowed his eyes before taking yet another step.
"I see you’re beginning to view your Luna through my eyes, Alpha Kai. Proceed. I’m listening." A wicked smile tugged at his lips. "What is this question of yours?"
