The Adopted Cannon Fodder Made a Comeback

Chapter 511 - 496: Feng Ling’s Idea

  • Next Chapter

Bai Xiaohua was pregnant, which finally put Liu Yuan’s mind at ease.

Now that Zheng Zhongshan’s wedding was over, there were no other major events to deal with. As for Zheng Changsheng and Lin Shuying, Lin Shuying felt they didn’t need a ceremony. Simply registering their marriage would be enough. At their age, they just wanted to live their lives together, so why bother with all the formalities?

But Zheng Changsheng didn’t want it to be so quiet. Even though it was Lin Shuying’s second marriage, he felt they should still celebrate it somehow. Inviting relatives and friends for a meal was a must.

However, Zheng Changsheng wasn’t in a huge rush. They couldn’t get married right on the heels of Zheng Zhongshan; they would have to wait a few months, or even half a year. Besides, he had just bought a house and wanted to get it ready. They could get married in their new home, and Lin Shuying could move in then.

As for the marriage certificate, Zheng Changsheng would have to make a trip back to his village to get proof of residence from his household registration. Ultimately, he and Lin Shan decided it would be best to just transfer Zheng Changsheng’s household registration to this city. Otherwise, Lin Shuying would have to transfer hers to his village, where everyone would find out and surely start gossiping. Moving his registration here was more convenient, would keep him from getting entangled in village affairs, and would prevent any potential trouble from Zheng Daniu.

Arranging something like this was no problem for Lin Shan, and it didn’t violate any rules. Zheng Changsheng thought it was a great idea, so he agreed.

However, Zheng Changsheng left the task of renovating the house to Lin Shuying. He had originally planned to do it himself, but Gu’er had given him an assignment. Marina’s sister had already contacted her people, asking them to produce a batch of clothing as samples to be sent to Country M. If the quality was acceptable and the styles were good, they could establish a long-term partnership.

Gu’er saw this as a great opportunity. With the economy developing, collaborating with other countries and exporting goods would be an excellent move. She felt a sense of satisfaction at the thought of selling to foreigners and earning their money.

Therefore, Zheng Changsheng had to go back to find fabrics, find a manufacturer, and arrange all the work. As for the designs, Gu’er helped sketch a few, but she had no training, so her drawings were very rough. Zheng Changsheng thought the general concepts were good, but he would need to take them back and have someone refine them based on Gu’er’s ideas.

As for the structure, if they officially formed an export company, Zheng Changsheng would be the legal representative, since he was more conveniently located. Gu’er and Sun Jiaming would get one share together, Li Zhi would get one share, and Dingzi and Marina would get one share. They would also give a share to Marina’s sister. After all, she was the one who made the connection. Whether she cared about the money or not, they had to give her a proper cut. This was how the profits would be distributed if the venture was successful.

So, Zheng Changsheng went back to arrange matters. A few days after he left, he called and asked someone from their group to come over, because there were many things that couldn’t be clearly explained over the phone. He couldn’t make all the decisions alone; they needed to discuss them together.

They decided to send Sun Jiaming and Li Zhi. Feng Ling also went along. Li Zhi had offered to take her, saying he wanted her to broaden her horizons, and Feng Ling didn’t refuse.

Since Marina’s child, Dian Dian, was still little, Dingzi did not go.

After Sun Jiaming left, Gu’er felt a little unsettled. It wasn’t anything major; she just wasn’t used to him being gone. At first, Sun Jiaming had wanted her to go too, since she could offer ideas for the designs she’d drawn. But with the baby, how could she possibly tag along? She felt miserable now if she didn’t see her child for even a day. She was finally understanding what it meant to have a baby—it tied you down completely.

But taking the child with her was another story. Jiji was just learning to walk and always on the move. She couldn’t watch him all by herself. They were supposed to be on a business trip; she couldn’t have everyone spending their time helping her look after the baby.

Feng Ling had said she could help watch him, but Gu’er still felt it would be inconvenient. After all, when you’re traveling, it’s hard to deal with things if something unexpected happens. So she decided to stay home with her son.

Jiji was especially active now. He didn’t want to be held and insisted on walking back and forth all day. But he wasn’t steady on his feet yet, so someone always had to be right behind him, watching his every step. Even then, he’d fallen twice. One time he nearly cut his eyebrow. Thankfully, Jiji wasn’t much of a crier. After a tumble, he’d just pout for a second and then get right back up. Gu’er and Cao Qiu had aching backs every day from the effort, but they were happy to do it.

When Jiji whimpered at night, Gu’er knew he had to pee. Ever since he was a month old, the boy had rarely wet the bed. He would just whimper whenever he had the urge.

"Jia Ming, our son has to pee."

Gu’er mumbled, still half-asleep, but there was no response. Normally, the moment their son whimpered, Sun Jiaming would get up and hold him over the potty without her having to say a thing. ’Why isn’t he moving?’

Jiji’s whimpering grew more insistent, and Gu’er jolted awake. Only then did she remember that Sun Jiaming wasn’t home. She hurried to get up and hold Jiji. After he finished and fell back asleep, Gu’er was no longer sleepy.

She felt how empty the bed was. With the person beside her gone, so was his warm embrace. It was so uncomfortable. She had been alone before, but now, after just one night, she felt awful. ’What a terrifying thing habit is,’ she thought.

She touched Jia Ming’s pillow. Normally, she would be resting her head on his shoulder at this time of night, but now there was just empty space. She missed him. ’I wonder if he’s thinking of me right now,’ she thought. Gu’er laid her head down on Jia Ming’s pillow...

Sun Jiaming and the group were gone for about ten days before they came back. Zheng Changsheng didn’t return with them; he still had plenty of work to do there.

Upon his return, Sun Jiaming and Gu’er were naturally inseparable and affectionate, like lovers reunited after a long parting. They wished they could stick to each other every second of the day.

What surprised Gu’er, however, was Feng Ling, who came to see her on the third day after returning.

"Sister, I want to learn to design clothes. This time in Guang City, I saw a place that teaches it, and I really want to learn. But I don’t know if I can still learn at my age. I haven’t had much schooling, either. Do you think I can do it?"

The trip had really opened Feng Ling’s eyes. She saw all the different kinds of clothes in Guang City and became fascinated. When she learned there were special schools for fashion design, she became eager to study it. But she was hesitant, so after thinking it over for two days, she came to find Gu’er.

"I think that’s a wonderful idea! You’re interested, and you have the potential. You’ve got a natural talent for it, so why not learn? Don’t worry about not being literate; as long as you put your heart into it, there’s nothing you can’t master. If you succeed, that would be amazing! You’d be our very own clothing designer, and we wouldn’t have to find anyone else. We could just produce the clothes you design, and we wouldn’t have to worry about sales."

Gu’er was very supportive. Feng Ling was incredibly intuitive. At Xinghua’s shop, she had helped design many sweater styles and came up with lots of new patterns. Xinghua’s sweater shop had since doubled in size, and she had hired two more employees, but they were still busy every single day. Xinghua had told her several times that Feng Ling was exceptionally clever and that the patterns she came up with were very popular. Gu’er truly felt that Feng Ling had a gift for it.

So, the fact that Feng Ling had this ambition was a good thing in Gu’er’s eyes. A skill like that could benefit her for a lifetime. And once Feng Ling had a goal, she would work hard for it. Having your own purpose is what makes life feel meaningful.
