The Adopted Cannon Fodder Made a Comeback

That evening, besides making dinner, Gu’er also simmered some chicken soup.

She added some ginseng slices to the soup and skimmed off all the fat, letting it simmer until it was wonderfully fragrant.

Before it was even ready, Chun Ya was already swallowing her saliva and twitching her nose nonstop.

Liu Fang’s heart was in turmoil. ’Stay calm,’ she told herself. ’Don’t give in to gluttony.’ But the aroma of the chicken soup kept wafting into her nostrils, making it hard to resist.

’Gu’er has been doing all the cooking since yesterday,’ Liu Fang thought. ’Even her simple meals are better than what I usually eat for the New Year. The Lin family wants for nothing; they have everything and can eat whatever they please. It’s nothing like before, when my mother-in-law would nag me for half a day just for wanting an egg. Later, even if I only ate a bowl of congee, she would still curse me half to death. This is the life I deserve, not suffering in that village.’

"Sui’er, the chicken soup is ready. Take a bowl to Mom and help her eat. Otherwise, her body won’t be able to take it."

Gu’er called Sui’er over.

Lin Sui’er carried the chicken soup into the master bedroom. From inside came Chen Fengjiao’s grumbling refusal to eat, followed by Lin Sui’er’s attempts to persuade her.

"Jia Ming, you must be tired. Have a bowl, too."

Gu’er ladled out a bowl for Sun Jiaming, and then one for herself.

Gu’er took a sip. The flavor was indeed excellent. She glanced at the mother and daughter in the living room, then picked up another bowl. Inside were the sleeping pills she had placed there earlier. By now, the pills had dissolved in the bit of water at the bottom.

Gu’er ladled a bowl of soup into it. Then, she took a smaller bowl, put some chicken meat in it, and added a little bit of soup. There wasn’t much in this second bowl, just enough for Chun Ya.

Gu’er carried them over and set them on the coffee table. Without a word, she turned and went back to drinking her own soup.

Seeing the eager look in her daughter’s eyes, Liu Fang picked up the bowl and began feeding her the chicken meat. ’I’m not worried about Gu’er poisoning us,’ she thought. ’She wouldn’t dare. Besides, it all came from the same pot. If she poisoned it, they’d be in trouble too.’

Chun Ya ate with great relish. After finishing the chicken and drinking a few sips of soup, the bowl was empty.

Seeing her daughter staring at her expectantly, Liu Fang picked up the other bowl of soup to give Chun Ya a drink.

"I put ginseng slices in there. It’s too potent for her; she’s still too young. If she drinks too much, her body won’t be able to handle it, and she could get a nosebleed."

Gu’er said this lightly, watching them. She was afraid Chun Ya couldn’t handle too much of the drugged soup; she had no intention of harming the child.

"Oh, oh, I don’t understand these things. I won’t give her any more then."

Liu Fang nodded hastily at Gu’er. She knew ginseng was a good thing and that Gu’er had added it to help Chen Fengjiao recover. ’She’s probably not lying to me,’ she thought. ’I can’t let Chun Ya have too much.’

Liu Fang began to drink it herself. It was so fragrant. She let out a comfortable sigh.

After the initial aroma, there was a faint bitter aftertaste. ’Right, Gu’er said she put ginseng in it,’ Liu Fang thought. ’Ginseng is medicinal, so it’s supposed to be a little bitter. That must be it.’

Just then, a CRASH came from the bedroom, sounding like a shattering bowl.

"Mom said she won’t drink it and that we should just let her starve! I couldn’t convince her, and she even smashed the bowl."

Lin Sui’er came out and said helplessly, shooting a fierce glare at Liu Fang as she finished.

"How can she go on without eating? Goodness... I’ll call Dad in a bit and have him try to convince Mom."

A troubled look flashed across Gu’er’s face.

Holding the bowl, Liu Fang savored every sip. ’It would be for the best if Chen Fengjiao starved to death,’ she mused. ’The angrier she gets, the bigger a scene she’ll make with Lin Shan, which will only make me seem more pitiful. In the future, the Lin family’s good life will be all mine. Go on, throw a fit! Get angry! Things are only going to get messier.’ In high spirits, Liu Fang tilted her head back and drained the entire bowl of soup.

"You have a bowl too. Studying must have been exhausting lately."

Gu’er handed a bowl to Sui’er, who took it and began to drink it slowly with a spoon.

"Mom, I’m sleepy."

Chun Ya felt drowsy and turned to Liu Fang, wanting to sleep.

At that moment, Liu Fang also felt groggy. ’I haven’t slept well these past two days,’ she thought. ’That must be why I’m so sleepy now.’ She hugged Chun Ya, and before she could even grab a blanket, she slumped over on the sofa.

"Sister, she’s down."

Sui’er whispered excitedly.

"Wait a bit. Let the drug take full effect first."

Gu’er’s voice sounded calm, but in reality, her heart was not as tranquil as she appeared. ’I have no other choice,’ she thought.

Just then, there was a knock on the door. Lin Sui’er ran to open it.

Outside were Dingzi and Li Zhi.

"Where is she?"

Li Zhi asked Lin Sui’er in a low voice.

"She’s out. Right there on the sofa."

Lin Sui’er pointed for them.

Li Zhi and Dingzi entered the house and looked at the sleeping Liu Fang. She was indeed good-looking, but unfortunately, her heart was wicked.

"Have some chicken soup to warm up."

Gu’er ladled out a bowl of chicken soup for each of them.

"We’ve already spoken with Liu Fang’s older brother, and they’ve agreed. Liu Fang’s sister-in-law promised she absolutely won’t let Liu Fang run away. If Liu Fang refuses to eat or drink, or does something to herself, that’s her fate, and no one is to blame. They told us not to worry."

Li Zhi explained to Gu’er as he drank his soup. "We drove to the village first thing this morning, found the Liu family, and told them about the situation. At first, the Liu family didn’t want to take her back. But then we offered to find a job for her older brother so he could earn some money. We also offered a monthly stipend so they wouldn’t be supporting her for free. They agreed immediately. Then, we had her older brother sign a document. If the Liu family goes back on their word, or says or does anything they shouldn’t, they’ll have to pay a huge amount in compensation."

In reality, the document has no legal standing. It was just to scare the Liu family so they wouldn’t get any funny ideas.

We made it clear to the Liu family: as long as Liu Fang is with them, they are not to let her run off. Otherwise, they will have to bear all the consequences. We only came back after everything was settled.

We plan to take her to the Liu family tonight. Tomorrow, we’ll go there again to publicly announce her return to her maiden home. We’ll also ask the village chief and others to look out for her. Once it’s all out in the open, the matter will be settled.

"Thank you for your hard work. We’re troubling you to make another trip tonight."

Gu’er had wanted to send her away during the day, but Li Zhi and the others told Sun Jiaming it would be best to do it at night so no one would see.

"It’s no trouble at all. Don’t worry, I’m already familiar with the route from this morning’s trip."

Li Zhi glanced at Gu’er. There was no need for such formalities between them.

After Dingzi and Li Zhi finished their soup, they began moving the people downstairs.

"Let me help carry her!"

Lin Sui’er was eager to help.

"Don’t get in the way. Your Brother Dingzi is here."

Li Zhi waved his hand dismissively.

Dingzi hoisted Liu Fang directly onto his shoulder. She didn’t stir at all. Li Zhi picked up Chun Ya, grabbed Liu Fang’s luggage with his other hand, and the two of them carried mother and daughter downstairs.

"Big Sis, Brother Li Zhi and the others have already driven off. Don’t worry, no one saw them."

Lin Sui’er had followed them downstairs and now returned to tell Gu’er excitedly.

’They’re gone. It’s good that they’re gone,’ Gu’er thought. ’When Liu Fang wakes up again, she’ll find herself back at her parents’ house. Her fate will be altered, and it will no longer be the beautiful one she imagined for herself.’
