The moment Lin Sui’er saw Gu’er, she started to speak, but then she noticed Sun Jiaming closing the door behind them. Gu’er shot her a look.

"Sis, you—you have no idea what kind of person she is! If you knew, you’d slap her too."

Lin Sui’er explained angrily. When she got home from school today, she’d found two strangers in the house. At first, she thought they were just villagers looking for her dad or mom. She didn’t mind folks from the village, so she greeted them warmly, played with the child, and was about to get them a snack. But her mom pulled her away and explained the situation. As soon as she heard, she flew into a rage and started cursing Liu Fang. Liu Fang just stood there and took it. Seeing that she couldn’t hold her daughter back, Chen Fengjiao had no choice but to call Gu’er.

"That’s enough. If there’s a problem, we can sit and discuss it. Do you really think shoving her out the door is going to solve anything?" Gu’er asked Sui’er.

Sui’er looked at Gu’er and understood at once. ’Sis must already know what happened.’ Ever since the time Gu’er had hit her, she’d been a little scared of her, but she also admired her and truly saw her as an older sister. Seeing Gu’er’s reaction, she just mumbled something and said no more.

"I... I should just go. I know none of you want me here, so I won’t disturb you any longer."

Just then, Liu Fang made as if to leave.

Her pitiful, aggrieved act put everyone on edge.

"If you leave now, does that mean you’ll never be back? If you walk out that door and never set foot in this house again, then by all means, go."

Gu’er said lightly. ’Who is she trying to fool with this whole "retreat to advance" gambit?’

Liu Fang was stunned by Gu’er’s words. She had been certain that Gu’er and Chen Fengjiao wouldn’t actually let her leave. If they had truly wanted her gone, they would have kicked her out earlier instead of waiting. That was why she had dared to say it. She never imagined Gu’er would call her bluff with a line like that.

"I... I’ll wait for Brother Lin to come back. He’ll worry if he returns and can’t find me."

Liu Fang knew no one in this room would give her an out, so she had to create one for herself. With that, she turned around and returned to the living room.

"Hmph. Like hell he’d be worried! My dad doesn’t give a damn about you. If you’ve got the guts, then leave! No one’s stopping you," Lin Sui’er scoffed.

Gu’er shot her a look, and Lin Sui’er immediately quieted down.

"Let me put the baby down first."

Sun Jiaming took the baby. Jiji was sleeping soundly, completely oblivious to the drama in the room.

"Put him in my room," Chen Fengjiao said quickly. She would have been overjoyed to see her eldest grandson, if not for Liu Fang’s irritating presence.

"Let’s put him in Xiao Zheng’s room. Xiao Zheng, go pack your things. Brother Li Zhi is waiting for you downstairs. You’ll stay with him tonight, and he’ll take you to school tomorrow," Gu’er said to Lin Zheng.

"Okay, Sis. I’ll go pack now. I’m leaving everything here to you."

Lin Zheng nodded obediently. He knew there was trouble at home, but it wasn’t something he could fix. Since his older sister had told him to go with Brother Li Zhi, his job was to listen and not make things more difficult for the adults.

Lin Zheng packed his schoolbag, put on his coat, and went downstairs.

Meanwhile, Sun Jiaming finished putting the baby down.

Gu’er grabbed Lin Sui’er and pulled her into the room.

"If you don’t have anything to do, go read a book and stop yelling. I saw people poking their heads out to look when I was coming upstairs," Gu’er whispered to Lin Sui’er.

"What’s there to be afraid of? She’s the one who’s shameless. If anyone’s losing face, it should be her," Lin Sui’er grumbled.

"You’re right, she’s the one who’s disgraced, and people will curse her for it. But you have to understand, when it comes to matters of reputation, the rumors don’t have to be true to cause problems. The people who love to gossip don’t care about the truth; they just want something to talk about. Mark my words, if Liu Fang leaves here and starts talking, or if our neighbors overhear anything, within a few days it’ll be all over the village. The story will be that Dad has a woman on the side, that he even has a child with her who’s already a few years old. They’ll say the woman came to our home and we beat her and threw her out. It will go on and on. Normally, those people have nothing on you, so they’re secretly thrilled that you’re in a bit of trouble. They will absolutely spread malicious rumors. Do you really want to hear people saying things like that?" Gu’er asked Lin Sui’er.

"They’re just such gossips. It’s infuriating! But you’re right. I was just too angry earlier to think about all that. And Dad... why did he have to help someone like her back then?"

Lin Sui’er had been blinded by anger, but now she had to admit that what Gu’er said made perfect sense.

"When you help someone, how can you know what kind of person they really are? Back then, her husband had died, her mother-in-law treated her poorly, she was raising a child on her own, and she was being bullied. Dad was the local official; of course he couldn’t just ignore her plight. Who could have possibly predicted what would happen later? There’s no use blaming him now."
