Anger and hatred flashed in Zhou Feng’er’s eyes at Gu’er’s words, yet deep within them lay a trace of confusion and helplessness.

Gu’er saw it clearly. There was definitely more to this story.

But Zhou Feng’er said nothing. She turned around, showing Gu’er her back, making it clear she didn’t want to see her.

Gu’er gave Sun Jiaming a look, and he stepped out of the room.

"Eldest Sister, I’ll go keep our brother-in-law company. You and Second Sister can talk."

Zhou Duo’er went out too. She wanted to spend some time alone with Sun Jiaming. ’What if I can get him in a good mood? Maybe he’ll be happy enough to help me. And what if he were to...’ Although she now knew nothing could happen between them as she had once imagined, she still held on to a sliver of fantasy in her heart.

"Zhou Feng’er, there’s no one else here, so let’s not beat around the bush. To be honest, who you marry has nothing to do with me. I’d even be happy to see you marry Zhang Da. I’d be thrilled when you end up living a miserable life and suffering. But, Zhou Feng’er, I don’t want Mom to suffer with you. I don’t want you to choose the wrong person and end up making Mom’s life miserable too."

Gu’er didn’t hide her feelings.

"That’s her fate! She gave birth to me and made me suffer, so she has to suffer with me. If my life is miserable, she can forget about having a good one!"

Zhou Feng’er spoke with deep-seated resentment. She truly was filled with hate. She hated Li Hua for bringing her into the Zhou family, hated that she had to suffer so much, and hated that the heavens were so unfair, giving everything good to Gu’er.

"You’re marrying Zhang Da just to get revenge on Mom?"

Gu’er frowned.

Zhou Feng’er remained silent.

"I’m not here to try and persuade you, Zhou Feng’er. You can’t stand me, and I can’t stand you. So since you’re not pretending in front of me, I don’t need to put on an act either. I just want to ask if you’ve really decided to marry Zhang Da. And don’t think marrying him is some kind of revenge against Mom. If you think you can use this marriage to ruin her life, you can forget about it."

Gu’er was laying all her cards on the table.

"So what if I want to ruin her life? What are you going to do about it? If I marry badly and suffer, Mom will have to suffer with me. If I can’t be happy, no one gets to be happy."

A vicious look crossed Zhou Feng’er’s face. Before Gu’er could respond, she added, "Gu’er, aren’t you supposed to be so capable? What can you do to me? That Zhang Da used to be interested in you, but so what? Now he wants to marry me. He doesn’t want you anymore."

Gu’er looked at Zhou Feng’er. The rage in her sister’s eyes seemed to have burned away all reason.

"You’re insane. It looks like I shouldn’t have come today."

’She’s really lost her mind,’ Gu’er thought. ’If she got together with Zhang Da just because he used to like me, and is now using this to get back at Li Hua, then she’s beyond saving. Utterly stupid.’

Gu’er didn’t look at Feng’er again. She turned and walked away. Just as she’d said, she shouldn’t have come. To hell with what happened to Zhou Feng’er.

"I’m... I’m pregnant."

Gu’er had almost reached the door when she suddenly heard the words.

The voice was quiet, laced with a hint of frailty, panic, and timidity. ’Was that really Zhou Feng’er?’

’Pregnant? What does she mean?’

The thought made Gu’er whip around to stare at Zhou Feng’er. She said angrily, "You’re pregnant? Zhou Feng’er, don’t tell me you’re pregnant with Zhang Da’s child."

Zhou Feng’er bit her lip and clenched her fists, saying nothing, but her silence was a clear admission.

Gu’er fought the urge to slap her. ’This woman actually got pregnant with Zhang Da’s child. Has she lost her mind?’

"When did it happen?"

Gu’er asked again, her voice rising. She was suddenly reminded of herself in her past life.

"I... I didn’t want to. He took me to his house that day... The first couple of times I went, he... he didn’t do anything. I never expected that he would... I had two glasses of strong liquor, and I couldn’t fight back. I..."

There was a sob in Zhou Feng’er’s voice. The truth was, she didn’t want to marry Zhang Da either. She wanted to marry well. But now that she was pregnant, what choice did she have?

"’Serves you right!’ Gu’er berated her. ’You knew what kind of person he was, yet you still went to his house! You were asking for trouble! Zhou Feng’er, you got pregnant from just that one time?’"

"Later... later I went back a few more times. At that point, I was already his woman. What else could I do?"

Zhou Feng’er mumbled. The last thing she wanted was for Gu’er to look down on her, but she truly had no one else to talk to about this, and deep down, she was terrified.

Gu’er looked at Zhou Feng’er, her gaze icy.

"What are you staring at me for? Don’t act like you’re some saint. When you were living at Sun Jiaming’s place, you dare say you and he never did ’it’? You’re no better than me. And don’t think I don’t know about you and other men. Can you really say you’re innocent when it comes to Li Zhi and Liu Yuan? Zhou Gu’er, you’re just lucky! You’re better-looking than me and you have good parents, otherwise, do you really think you’d be any better than me? I’m going to marry Zhang Da. I’m already three months along. I’m marrying him right away! You can hope for the best for me, but if my life turns into a living hell, then no one gets to be happy! If I’m going to die, I’ll drag you all down to hell with me!"

Gu’er’s gaze had clearly provoked her.

"’You’ve made your bed, now you have to lie in it. Go on and get married, and enjoy your wonderful life.’"

Without another word, Gu’er left this parting shot and walked out the door.

Outside, Sun Jiaming was standing by the door, looking into the room. Zhou Duo’er was smiling and saying something to him, but he wasn’t paying her any attention at all.

"Eldest Sister, are you done talking? Eldest Sister, please just let me go back with you. You don’t like Second Sister, right? Now that she’s getting married, she won’t be an eyesore for you anymore. Just let me come back. If I go back with you, it’ll lighten Mom’s load too, won’t it?"

When Zhou Duo’er saw Gu’er, she started pleading with her again. She had just been talking to Sun Jiaming, but he hadn’t responded to a single word. Since she couldn’t get anywhere with him, her only option was to try Gu’er again.

Gu’er looked at Zhou Duo’er and thought for a moment before asking, "Du’er, do you know what’s going on with your second sister?"

"My second sister? What about her? You mean about her and Zhang Da? She was the stupid one, insisting on going out with him. That Zhang Da is a real piece of work. He tricked my sister into sleeping with him, and now she’s pregnant with his child. She probably thinks I don’t know, but I’ve known for a while. She has no choice now. If she doesn’t marry Zhang Da, she won’t be able to hide her belly after the New Year. By then, no one else will want her, so she has to marry him. Besides, Eldest Sister, you don’t like her anyway, so why do you care? Whether her life is good or bad, it’s her own doing. If she wants to get married, just let her. When her life turns miserable, it’s her problem if she cries. Won’t that make you feel better anyway?"

Zhou Duo’er said all this with a casual air, as if it didn’t concern her at all.

Her words sent a chill down Gu’er’s spine. ’So I was the stupid one all along?’ she thought. She had believed she saw right through Zhou Duo’er, but she’d been completely wrong. Zhou Duo’er wasn’t simple-minded; she knew everything. She just didn’t care. She didn’t care what kind of life Zhou Feng’er would have in the future. There was no sisterly affection whatsoever. Gu’er suspected that even if Zhou Feng’er died, Duo’er wouldn’t shed a tear. When she’d asked to come back with her just now, she had only thought of herself. ’How cold-hearted. How did I never notice this before?’
