Xinghua was also thrilled for her brother. Growing up, she had always seen him in poor health and watched her mother weep in secret. Her greatest wish had been for her brother to get well so their mother would no longer be sad. Now, that wish had come true, and she felt like life was full of hope.

After they finished eating, Gu’er brewed some tea. Everyone sat down to talk again and didn’t leave until after ten o’clock at night.

When it was time for Jiji’s full moon celebration, the Sun Family booked a banquet at a restaurant. If it were up to Gu’er, she wouldn’t have wanted a big affair; a simple meal with her own family would have been enough. But Cao Qiu insisted, saying she wanted everyone to know she had a grandson. She believed such a happy occasion deserved a proper celebration. She invited many people, and Gu’er felt she couldn’t refuse, so she went along with it.

Doctor Cui was also invited and given the seat of honor. Lin Shan shook his hand and expressed his gratitude, as he knew that Doctor Cui had intervened during Gu’er’s difficult labor, sparing her from suffering. Without him, things could have become very troublesome.

Doctor Cui was quite surprised and especially pleased to learn that Lin Shan was Gu’er’s father. Lin Shan was a city official, after all. Even with his superb medical skills, it wasn’t often he had the chance to meet a government leader. Now, to have a leader holding his hand and thanking him, he couldn’t have been more delighted. He immediately declared that if anyone in the Lin Family or the Sun Family had any health problems in the future—be it sickness, childbirth, or even infertility—they should just come to him.

Lin Shan nodded, accepting the kind offer. It was never a bad thing to know a highly skilled doctor. People are only human, after all; who could guarantee they would never get sick?

The full moon banquet was a lively affair, and Jiji did his family proud. He was passed around and held by many people but hardly cried at all. After making his rounds, he had received quite a few gifts. Although he was too young to understand, whenever someone cooed at him, he would break into a wide, gummy smile, earning endless praise from everyone.

The next day, Cao Qiu rushed back to the village to hold another full moon banquet there. She had originally wanted to take the baby back with her to show him off, but Gu’er thought about it and said no. It was already October and the weather was turning cold. The wind was even stronger in the village, and she was afraid the baby would be exposed and catch a cold.

Cao Qiu was eager to show off her grandson, but Gu’er’s reasoning was sound. If her grandson were to catch a cold, she would be heartbroken. So, she didn’t take the baby. Sun Jiaming drove her and Sun Zhuzi back to the village.

"As if no one else can have a baby. What’s there to show off? So she had a grandson, big deal."

After Cao Qiu and Sun Zhuzi left, Wei Hong started grumbling resentfully to Gu’er as they walked upstairs. Cao Qiu had summoned her, and she hadn’t wanted to go back to the village in the first place. Cao Qiu had insisted she come along, saying that Gu’er was too busy with the baby and needed her to go back to the village to lend a hand. But now that the baby wasn’t going, she didn’t have to go either. She was fuming, and the moment Cao Qiu was gone, she couldn’t stop herself from speaking her mind.

Gu’er glanced at her but didn’t say anything, simply continuing on her way.

Wei Hong was already jealous of Gu’er to begin with. She had been convinced Gu’er was carrying a girl, but when Gu’er gave birth to a son, she was consumed with bitterness. Now her standing in the Sun Family was even lower. Cao Qiu couldn’t even be bothered to look at Tingting anymore; her eyes were glued to Jiji all day long. How could she not be furious?

"Showing off her ’precious grandson’ everywhere, as if anyone cares. Doting on him, treating him like he’s some priceless treasure. She should be careful, or that good fortune might not stick. He might not even live to grow up."

Wei Hong was already fuming, and when she saw that Gu’er was ignoring her, her anger flared. In a careless moment, she uttered the curse. In truth, Wei Hong knew she shouldn’t have said such a thing, but she was just so jealous. She felt like she would suffocate if she didn’t let it out.

Gu’er’s expression instantly darkened. They had just reached their door. She whirled around and glared at Wei Hong. She hadn’t wanted to stoop to Wei Hong’s level, but she could not tolerate someone cursing Jiji. It was unbearable.

"What did you just say? Say it again."

A cold glint flashed in Gu’er’s eyes. She didn’t give a damn if Wei Hong was her sister-in-law.

"I... what did I say? I didn’t say anything! Why are you yelling at me? I’m your sister-in-law! Jiasheng is the eldest son of this family! In the old days, you would have had to kneel before me! The wife of the eldest brother is like a mother—you’re supposed to treat me like your own mother! What gives you the right to be so aggressive with me?"

Wei Hong was indignant. She felt that Gu’er had always been holding her down, and she resented it.

"Kneel? Kneel my ass! You want to be my mother? Are you even worthy? Wei Hong, I don’t want to be like you. I put up with you, not because I’m helpless against you, but because I can’t be bothered to waste my energy arguing with you. But I will absolutely not tolerate you talking about my child. Remember this: this is the first and the last time. If I ever hear you say anything like that about Jiji again, don’t blame me for what happens next."
