The Adopted Cannon Fodder Made a Comeback
Chapter 442 - 437: Grandson
"By the way, Brother Cui, did my daughter-in-law have one or two? Do I have a grandson or a granddaughter?"
Cao Qiu asked again, as the nurses still hadn’t come out. She was anxious to know what Gu’er had delivered.
"Just one baby. A good weight, too—over six jin. As for whether it’s a boy or a girl, I didn’t look. Alright, I’m heading out. Remember to invite me for the full-month celebration."
With that, Doctor Cui didn’t linger. He swaggered off with his splay-footed gait. He rarely got involved personally these days; his daughter usually handled things. Of course, her skills couldn’t compare to his yet—she still had a lot to learn. Still, the Cui Family’s reputation for delivering babies and treating infertility was well-earned. If not for his slight friendship with Cao Qiu, he wouldn’t have come. Now that the matter was resolved, it was time for him to leave.
"Since Brother Cui didn’t say, it must be a girl."
Cao Qiu sank onto a bench, her spirits deflated.
Sun Jiaming, however, didn’t mind. As long as Gu’er and the baby were both healthy, it was all the same to him whether they had a son or a daughter.
"What’s going on? How come I heard Gu’er was in labor the moment I got back? Where’s Gu’er?"
Just then, Li Zhi ran over, panting for breath. He had just returned home, but the moment he arrived at the Sun Family’s house, Aunt Zhao told him there was an emergency. He had rushed over in his car immediately.
"We don’t know what happened either. I just came by today to drop off some diapers for the baby, and I heard the news as soon as I arrived. I immediately dragged Jiaming’s dad to the hospital. Jiaming was called back from the mall and hasn’t even seen Gu’er yet. We heard someone tried to run Gu’er down, but that girl, Feng Ling, stopped them. Oh, right, Feng Ling was injured too. She’s being treated downstairs."
"Feng Ling was injured, too? Where is she hurt? Is it serious?"
A look of alarm flashed in Li Zhi’s eyes. He had only been worried about Gu’er at first; he hadn’t realized Feng Ling was hurt as well.
"I was only thinking about Gu’er, so I didn’t go over. You should go check on Feng Ling. Only Grandpa Guan is with her, so go give them a hand."
Sun Jiaming couldn’t have spared a thought for Feng Ling earlier; his mind was completely occupied by Gu’er.
"Okay, I’ll go see if they need any help. I’ll be back later."
Li Zhi glanced around and nodded. Gu’er had Sun Jiaming, Cao Qiu, and Sun Zhuzi with her; they didn’t need him. But Feng Ling only had the elderly Grandpa Guan by her side. He had to go look after them.
Just as Li Zhi was leaving, the door to the delivery room opened, and two nurses came out, one after the other.
"How’s my wife?"
Sun Jiaming asked urgently, wishing he could just barge in.
"She passed out from exhaustion. The head doctor is attending to her now. Don’t worry, she’ll be fine once she wakes up."
the nurse said reassuringly. Though Gu’er had fainted, her life wasn’t in danger.
"Thank heaven and earth, God bless her. As long as she’s okay, as long as she’s okay. You scared me to death! Good heavens, I nearly jumped out of my skin."
Cao Qiu clasped her hands together in prayer, muttering under her breath.
But Sun Jiaming couldn’t relax. ’Gu’er fainted. It must have been from the exhaustion and the pain. She must have gone through a terrible ordeal.’
"Whose baby is this? Do you want him or not?"
The other nurse called out, holding a baby in her arms.
Sun Jiaming, Sun Zhuzi, and Cao Qiu all looked over at once.
"This swaddling cloth isn’t ours. This can’t be our baby. Did this family have a boy or a girl?"
Cao Qiu asked.
"It’s a boy."
The nurse chuckled. The little guy was quite cute. Although the delivery hadn’t been easy, he had come out with his eyes wide open.
"Honestly! How can other people get a grandson, while we get a granddaughter."
Cao Qiu pouted, her face a mask of pure envy.
"Why is no one taking this baby? I’m asking, do you want him or not?"
The nurse looked at the three of them with exasperation.
"He’s not ours. You should ask someone else. Where is my granddaughter? Why hasn’t she come out yet?"
Cao Qiu kept peering into the delivery room.
Sun Jiaming’s eyes were also fixed on the delivery room door. More than the baby, he wanted to know when Gu’er would be brought out.
"Family of Lin Gu’er! Do you want this child or not? If you don’t, I’m taking him away!"
The nurse was getting annoyed. ’What is wrong with this family?’ she thought. ’I’ve been standing here holding him for ages, and they keep saying he’s not theirs? If he isn’t theirs, is he mine, then?’
"I am."
Sun Jiaming answered out of reflex.
"This is Gu’er’s baby? He’s from our family?"
But Cao Qiu still found it hard to believe.
"If he’s not yours, then whose is he? Lin Gu’er is the only patient in there right now! Honestly, some people get a grandson and still act like they don’t want him,"
the nurse grumbled.
"He’s really ours? But this swaddling cloth isn’t ours, is it?"
Cao Qiu was still unconvinced, but Sun Jiaming had already walked over to the baby.
The baby was red and wrinkly, with his eyes open. He seemed to be looking at something, and yet at nothing at all. In that instant, Sun Jiaming’s heart melted. ’Is this him?’ he thought. ’Gu’er’s and my flesh and blood?’
"You brought her in such a rush, you didn’t bring anything with you. This swaddling cloth is from the hospital. You should take him and get his things ready. The mother will be out soon."
The nurse tried to hand the baby to Sun Jiaming.
Sun Jiaming reached out his arms but hesitated, unsure how to take the baby. He was so small. How could he hold him without hurting him?
"Let me! Let me! I’ll hold him! How would a grown man like him know how to hold a baby? Oh, my grandson! I have a grandson! I have a grandson! It’s not a granddaughter! Thank the heavens, the Old Sun Family has an heir!"
Cao Qiu was so happy she was babbling. She had been convinced it was a granddaughter, and now it had turned out to be a grandson. Her long-held wish had finally been fulfilled; how could she not be ecstatic? But excitement aside, she still took the baby and cradled him gently. Looking at the grandson in her arms, Cao Qiu’s smile was wet with tears of joy.
Sun Zhuzi stood beside her, chuckling happily. ’This is my grandson,’ he thought. ’He looks just like Jiaming. This is wonderful.’
"Get away from the baby! Your breath stinks," Cao Qiu snapped at Sun Zhuzi. "I’m telling you, you’d better not smoke that pipe of yours anymore. If my grandson smells like smoke, you’ll have me to deal with!"
"Alright, alright. I won’t smoke, I won’t smoke."
Sun Zhuzi was simply overjoyed, completely unbothered by Cao Qiu’s tone.
Sun Jiaming’s expression softened as he looked at the tiny new life, but he didn’t watch for long. ’The baby has his grandma to look after him, so I don’t have to worry,’ he thought. ’But didn’t the nurse say Gu’er would be out soon? Why isn’t she here yet?’
In the meantime, Li Zhi came back for a moment. He was happy for them when he learned Gu’er had given birth to a son. After offering his congratulations, he returned to Feng Ling’s side.
When Gu’er finally opened her eyes, it was already nighttime. She stared at the ceiling in a daze. ’Where am I? What happened?’
"Gu’er! Gu’er, you’re awake?"
Seeing Gu’er’s eyes open, Sun Jiaming rushed to her side.
"Jiaming, I think... I gave birth. Where’s the baby?"
Gu’er recalled what had happened. She remembered hearing someone say the baby had been born just before she passed out.
"He’s born, he’s born. Don’t worry, the baby is doing great. He’s sleeping now."
Sun Jiaming squeezed Gu’er’s hand, calming her.
