Chapter 64: The Abyssal Fracture
Leon Wes opened his dual-colored eyes. The faint, jagged black mark beneath his icy blue right eye throbbed for a fleeting second, a phantom pulse from the draconic soul-bond anchoring him to Auris. He sat up, the spun-silk sheets falling away from his chest. He had slept deeply, a dreamless, unbroken rest that had allowed the High-Tier mana of Sector 12 to completely saturate his physical vessel.
He didn’t just feel rested; he felt invincible. The lingering 10% buff to his Constitution and Intelligence from the spiced Leviathan meat and Aether-wine hummed in his veins, pushing his already absurd stats even higher.
He rose from the bed and dressed. The system didn’t require him to manually buckle every strap of his new draconic gear; with a thought, the dark, gold-embroidered garments materialized over his physique. The heavy, rune-lined hood settled perfectly against his shoulders, and the immense, comforting weight of the Blade of the Dragon God secured itself in his spatial inventory.
He stepped out of the chamber and into the main hall of the estate.
Elder Vaelen was already awake, sitting cross-legged at a low mahogany table, meticulously grinding glowing blue tea leaves with a stone mortar. Beside him, little Kaelia was attempting to balance a perfectly round, glowing fruit on the tip of her small, scaled snout, her tail swishing in intense concentration.
The moment Leon entered the room, Kaelia lost her focus. The fruit tumbled into her lap, and her large golden eyes lit up.
"Lord Hero!" she chirped, scrambling to her feet and offering him another endearingly clumsy bow. "Good morning! Did you sleep well? Did the hot spring chase the tired away?"
Leon smiled, the harsh, predatory edge of his heterochromia softening completely. He walked over and knelt down, bringing himself to her eye level.
"The hot spring was perfect, Kaelia," Leon said, his voice warm. "It chased all the tired away. I’m completely ready to go to work."
She held up the glowing, translucent fruit she had been trying to balance. "Here! You should eat this before you go. Grandfather says Sun-Apples make your magic burn brighter. You need to be super bright to scare the dark fog away!"
Leon gently took the fruit from her small, scaled hands. The sheer innocence of the NPCs in this village was a staggering contrast to the ruthless, blood-soaked reality of Eternal Heaven. It was a stark reminder that while the system was a meat grinder, it was built to simulate a living, breathing world.
"Thank you," Leon said, taking a bite. The fruit tasted like crisp honey and static electricity, instantly sending a refreshing jolt through his nervous system. "I’ll make sure to burn as bright as I can."
Elder Vaelen ceased his grinding and stood up, leaning on his carved wooden staff. The ancient Dragonkin looked at Leon, his reptilian eyes sweeping over the Vanguard’s dark, majestic attire and the unmistakable aura of the Glacial Sovereign radiating from his soul.
"The crimson sun approaches its zenith, Hero," Vaelen said, his voice a deep, respectful rumble. "The atmospheric currents above the Shattered Crags will be at their most stable for the next few hours. It is time."
Leon stood up, his expression shifting from warmth back to absolute, icy focus. "Lead the way, Elder."
The walk through the sanctuary of the Azure Scale was quiet. The villagers had gathered along the cobblestone paths, standing in silent, reverent awe. They didn’t cheer or shout; they simply bowed as Leon passed, their hands pressed over their hearts. They were placing the survival of their entire culture on his shoulders.
Vaelen escorted him to the base of the massive, permafrost temple carved into the mountain’s rear cliff face. The freezing air radiating from the archway was a stark contrast to the warm magenta sunlight bathing the valley.
"I can go no further, Lord Hero," Vaelen said, bowing deeply. "The Sovereign’s aura is too dense for my old bones. May the Goddess guide your blade, and may the skies clear in your wake."
Leon nod and walked into the freezing depths of the temple.
Auris was awake. The massive Glacial Sovereign lifted his jagged, sapphire-plated head as Leon approached. A deep, resonant purr vibrated through the ice, and a wave of telepathic greeting—pure, unfiltered loyalty and a terrifying hunger for battle—washed over Leon’s mind.
I am ready, my Sovereign, the dragon’s ancient voice echoed in Leon’s thoughts.
"So am I, Auris," Leon spoke aloud, his breath pluming in the absolute zero air. "Let’s see what this Void Mist is really made of."
Leon stepped up onto the dais and vaulted smoothly onto the dragon’s massive back. He didn’t need a saddle. The soul-bond locked his presence to the beast; he felt the microscopic shifts in the dragon’s crystalline scales, intuitively knowing how to shift his weight to maintain perfect balance.
Auris spread his wings. They were breathtaking—massive expanses of translucent, sharpened ice that crackled with latent Aether-magic.
The dragon roared, a sound that shattered the silence of the temple and echoed for miles across the Prismatic Expanse. With a single, devastating downward thrust of his wings, Auris launched them into the air.
The sheer G-force of the takeoff would have snapped a normal player’s spine in half. Leon didn’t even flinch. His 165 Constitution, bolstered by Perfect Body, absorbed the kinetic shock effortlessly.
They shot out of the temple’s massive upper launch-bay and into the open sky of Sector 12.
The view from the back of an Adept-tier High-Dragon was indescribable. The crystalline forests of the Prismatic Expanse stretched out like a glittering, multi-colored ocean below them. The massive, glowing blue mana rivers looked like veins of pure energy pulsing through the earth.
To the Shattered Crags, Leon commanded through their mental link.
Auris banked sharply, his Aether-coated wings slicing through the dense atmospheric pressure of the High-Tier Realm without a hint of resistance. They tore through the sky at a speed that broke the sound barrier, leaving a trail of freezing vapor and blue lightning in their wake.
Within minutes, the vibrant, bioluminescent landscape began to die.
The crystalline forests gave way to a jagged, broken wasteland of black, floating rocks and bottomless chasms. The sky here was not illuminated by the auroras; it was choked out by a massive, swirling ceiling of dense, grey fog.
The Void Mist.
It didn’t look like weather. It looked like a living, breathing entity of pure entropy, hovering maliciously over the fractured landscape. The sheer density of the mist swallowed all light, creating a suffocating dome of absolute nothingness.
"Take us in," Leon ordered, narrowing his eyes as the Vanguard of Humanity title completely nullified the crushing atmospheric gravity trying to drag them out of the sky.
Auris roared, his Void-Piercer Wings flaring with brilliant blue Aether-magic. The dragon didn’t slow down. He folded his wings slightly and dove directly into the wall of grey entropy.
The transition was violent.
The moment they breached the mist, all sound ceased. The rushing wind, the beating of the dragon’s wings, the ambient hum of Sector 12—it all vanished, replaced by an oppressive, ringing silence. Leon’s Origin Eyes flared, trying to pierce the fog, but the mist was actively devouring the ambient mana, scrambling his vision into a haze of static.
For ten agonizing seconds, they flew blindly through a sensory deprivation tank of raw void energy.
And then, everything settled.
They broke through the outer layer of the mist, emerging into a massive, self-contained pocket dimension hidden within the fog. The sky above was a swirling vortex of purple and black energy. The ground consisted of massive, floating chunks of ancient, ruined architecture suspended over an infinite, starry abyss.
Before Leon could even command Auris to land on the nearest floating platform, his system interface violently exploded into a flurry of blinding, golden text.
The sound of a massive, war-torn horn echoed directly in his mind.
Ding!
