Taming the Wild Beast of Alamina

Chapter 489: Recognition

  • Next Chapter

Arion expected something to happen the moment they crossed the final barrier.

Nothing did.

The nearest beast remained stretched beneath the trees exactly where Hendrik’s monitoring team had recorded it for the last several hours, its enormous body half-hidden beneath spring undergrowth and the shadows cast by the pines. Its breathing was slow enough that the rise and fall of its rib cage seemed almost disconnected from something that large and alive.

Another lay farther uphill.

A third watched them.

That one bothered Arion most.

Its head had lifted when the gate opened, dark eyes following the five men as they moved into the controlled section, but there was no tension in the animal’s body and no sign that it intended to stand.

It simply watched.

Hendrik checked the tablet in his hand.

"Heart rate increased by four beats."

Otto glanced toward him. "Because of us?"

"Possibly. Still well inside the dormant range."

Dax stood on Arion’s right, calm enough that his hands remained loose at his sides.

Nero was on the left.

Victor had refused to enter the enclosure before they established whether Arion produced any reaction at all, so his voice came through the earpieces from the sealed observation room beyond the inner fence.

"Advance another ten meters."

Arion moved first.

The ground beneath his boots was damp from last night’s rain, soft pine needles muffling their steps as they descended toward the nearest animal. The air smelled of wet bark, cold soil, and something heavier beneath it.

Corruption.

He knew that scent now. Not consciously enough to describe it. His body recognized it before his mind did. A bitter density settled behind the normal forest air, not strong enough to make him recoil, merely present.

Dax glanced toward Arion.

"You feel anything?"

"No."

That was true.

No headache, no pressure behind his eyes, and no strange heaviness in his limbs.

His glands remained quiet, and the vetiver beneath his skin felt exactly as it had outside the barrier.

They continued.

At twenty meters, the watching beast blinked.

At fifteen, it lowered its chin onto one enormous forelimb.

Nero exhaled.

"This is becoming disappointing."

Hendrik looked at him.

"That is preferable."

"I know. Still disappointing."

Arion almost smiled.

The tension he had carried from the palace began to loosen.

Maybe Dax had been right.

Maybe Victor had spent months searching for pathology where there was none.

The corrupted tone beneath Arion’s adult profile might simply be old biological scar tissue expressed through scent, something left behind from childhood and brought closer to the surface by Veyra without becoming dangerous.

The nearest beast did not care.

They stopped less than ten meters away.

Hendrik’s tablet remained green.

"No change in metabolic activity."

Victor’s voice followed through the earpiece.

"Arion, release a minimal amount."

Arion hesitated. Then allowed a thin trace of vetiver into the forest.

Dax’s gaze sharpened.

Nero turned his head slightly, apparently testing the output himself.

The beasts remained still.

The one watching them lifted its nose.

Arion held the release steady.

Nothing.

"No measurable response," Hendrik said.

Victor asked, "Nero?"

Nero frowned.

"He smells like Arion."

"That is not technically useful."

"It is extremely useful if everyone keeps insisting he might not."

Dax ignored them.

His attention remained fixed on the beasts.

Arion released a little more.

The corrupted pheromones around them thickened as the breeze changed direction, carrying the animals’ scent directly through the clearing.

Still nothing happened.

The pressure Arion had expected never came.

The beast closest to them gave a long, slow exhale and closed its eyes.

Nero looked offended.

"We came all this way for them to sleep."

"Would you prefer an attack?" Otto asked.

"No."

Nero considered the beast.

"I would accept mild interest."

"You have that one."

Otto indicated the animal farther uphill.

It had resumed watching Nero.

Nero looked back at it.

The staring contest lasted several seconds. Then Nero walked closer.

Hendrik’s head snapped up.

"Nero."

"What?"

"Stay within the marked distance."

"I am... technically."

The beast’s eyes followed him.

Nero stopped beside one massive forepaw stretched across the ground.

It did not move.

Arion knew that expression on Nero’s face.

"Nero."

Nero glanced over his shoulder.

"What?"

"Don’t."

"I haven’t done anything."

"You are considering it."

Dax sounded tired.

"He absolutely is."

Nero looked back at the beast.

Then, with the tip of his boot, he nudged the edge of its paw.

Hendrik closed his eyes.

Otto stared at him.

The beast lifted its head.

Nero waited.

Arion’s entire body tensed on instinct.

Nothing followed.

The animal looked down at Nero’s boot. Then back at Nero. Its expression somehow managed to communicate profound indifference despite not being human.

Nero nudged it once more.

The beast lowered its head again.

Nero looked toward the others.

"It doesn’t care."

Hendrik’s voice went very flat.

"I hate working with royalty."

"You work for royalty."

"That is why I have evidence."

Dax’s mouth twitched.

Even Arion relaxed enough to let out a quiet breath.

This was absurd.

Victor’s voice returned.

"I want another five minutes at this distance."

Arion looked toward the animal nearest him.

The beast’s sides rose and fell.

The wind shifted again.

This time the corrupted scent struck Arion more heavily.

It rolled through the clearing from several animals at once, dense enough that even Nero’s posture changed slightly as he registered the concentration.

Still safe.

Dominants were immune.

Arion inhaled.

Nothing hurt.

The vetiver beneath his skin responded, not defensively but almost lazily, spreading through his glands without conscious instruction.

Hendrik glanced down at the tablet.

"Your output increased."

"I didn’t increase it."

That got everyone’s attention.

Victor spoke immediately.

"Do not suppress it yet."

Arion remained still.

The pheromones continued rising.

Not enough to threaten anyone nor to trigger the beasts.

The opposite, if anything.

The nearest animal’s breathing slowed further.

Dax’s expression changed.

"Arion."

He looked toward him.

Dax stopped speaking.

Nero went silent too.

Arion frowned.

"What?"

Nobody answered immediately.

The forest suddenly seemed too quiet around them.

Arion could feel corrupted pheromones coating the air, moving over his skin and into every breath without resistance.

Nothing happened, there was only a strange familiarity he could not place.

Otto took one step closer.

"Your eyes."

Arion turned toward the reflective surface of Hendrik’s tablet.

For months, the gold had been darkening.

Now it was gone.

In its place burned the same unnatural, beastly yellow staring back at him from beneath the trees.
