Take Me Away, Dark Lord!

Chapter 248: Bonus

The study was completely silent, save for the soft, ticking sound of the grandfather clock and the faint crackle of the frost sublimating back into the air.

Kaelus stood entirely still.

He was breathing heavily, his chest heaving under his clothes. The adrenaline of the confrontation was fading, leaving behind the raw, bleeding edges of his resurrected trauma.

He had faced his family. He had faced the siblings who abandoned him.

His grip on Seraphina was incredibly tight, almost desperate, as if he were terrified she would vanish if he let go.

Seraphina didn’t squirm.

She didn’t complain about the tight grip.

She reached up with her small, warm hands and gently, softly placed them on both sides of his pale face.

Kaelus blinked, pulling his gaze away from the empty doorway, looking down at the dark, bottomless, understanding eyes of his daughter.

"Papa," Seraphina said, her voice soft, melodic, and entirely devoid of her previous arrogant swagger.

"I am here, Seraphina," Kaelus murmured, his voice cracking slightly, the terrifying warlord melting away to reveal the exhausted, wounded father beneath.

"They are very stinky, you did well by making them leave," Seraphina announced seriously, her face completely deadpan.

Kaelus let out a sharp, choked gasp of surprise.

"The old man smells like moldy cheese and bad cologne," Seraphina elaborated, squishing Kaelus’s cheeks with her tiny hands, forcing his lips to pucker slightly. "And he has a very ugly mustache. It looks like two dead caterpillars glued to his lip. You are much more handsome. And you smell like pine trees and magic."

A low, vibrating rumble started deep in Kaelus’s chest. It bubbled up through his throat, fighting past the trauma, the anger, and the grief.

He let out a loud, genuine, and completely uninhibited laugh.

He laughed until his shoulders shook, the sound rich and warm, completely dispelling the remaining, suffocating gloom of the study.

He closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against hers, taking a long, deep, grounding breath.

"You are completely incorrigible, little Mushroom," Kaelus chuckled softly, holding her close, feeling the broken pieces of his heart stitching themselves back together through pure childish logic. "Dead caterpillars?"

"It’s true," Seraphina nodded sagely. "If he comes back, I will unleash the shadow-ducks on his coat. We don’t need them, Papa. We have our own family. Me, you, Mr. Sebastian, the shiny knights, the grumpy Auntie Alistair, and the pink puppy. Our family is way cooler than theirs."

"It is infinitely cooler indeed," Kaelus agreed, a fiercely protective smile touching his lips. "They are irrelevant. You are my only heir, Seraphina. My only blood. The rest of the world can burn for all I care."

Seraphina hugged his neck, burying her face in his velvet collar.

She was happy he was smiling again.

She was happy the factory of vinegar and trauma had been shut down.

But as she rested her chin on his shoulder, staring at the empty doorway where Caspian and Elara had disappeared, her adult mind was rapidly filing away the intelligence she had gathered.

’They didn’t seem like evil,’ Seraphina concluded, her dark eyes narrowing with intense, calculating focus. ’They are trapped by something. Their Uncle is using them. He is parading them around to legitimize his own power grabs. Maybe, they didn’t want to leave Papa alone fifteen years ago, and they didn’t want to be here today.’

She didn’t tell Kaelus.

The Archduke was too close to the trauma.

He wouldn’t be able to see past his own pain to analyze their auras. If she told him his siblings were victims, he might do something rash, like storming their estate and accidentally starting a civil war.

’This requires a delicate, highly covert, unsanctioned investigation,’ Seraphina plotted, a slow, wicked smirk creeping across her soft cheeks.

She mentally reached out, tapping into her ethereal network.

’Butt-tolomeow,’ Seraphina transmitted, her dark mana humming silently in the background.

’I am here, Sovereign,’ the aristocratic voice of the ghost butler echoed in her mind.

’Assemble the D.S.S. Strike Team Alpha,’ Seraphina commanded, her inner mob-boss taking the wheel. ’I need full, 24/7 surveillance on the Count’s country estate. I want to know who they are talking to, what they are eating, and what leverage the old man has over Aunt Elara and Uncle Caspian. Leave no stone unturned.’

’Command received. It shall be executed with flawless precision, Queen of Shadows,’ Bartholomew replied eagerly. ’Shall we use the silver-threaded paper for maximum stealth?’

’Yes. And if the Uncle has any expensive wigs, feel free to let the ducks nest in them.’

’A delightful bonus, My Lady.’

Seraphina severed the connection.

She pulled back, looking at Kaelus’s smiling face.

She wasn’t going to let anyone hurt her grumpy hedgehog.

She was going to find out exactly what was happening with his siblings, dismantle the Uncle’s political power base, and completely rewrite the tragedy of the Nacht family.

"Papa," Seraphina chirped happily, swinging her legs. "Can we play chess now? I want to practice the new opening where I squish your horsies."

"You may attempt to squish my ’horsies’, little Sovereign," Kaelus grinned, carrying her toward the small gaming table in the corner of the study, completely ignoring the shattered mahogany desk behind them. "But I have fortified my flanks. Prepare for devastation."

The ghosts of the past had tried to haunt the estate.

But they had tragically misunderstood the power dynamics of the Capital. The Reaper was no longer alone, and the tiny mastermind in the white dress was already moving her pawns across the board.

To the untrained eye, Duke Kaelus von Nacht possessed a wardrobe composed entirely of varying shades of homicidal midnight.

His daily attire consisted of heavy plating, sharp velvet collars designed to intimidate foreign dignitaries, and cloaks woven from materials that absorbed both light and joy.

However, on a particularly warm Tuesday in the Imperial Capital, the Archduke committed a sartorial anomaly it nearly caused a panic within the Vanguard.

He wore casual clothes.
